happy breed history monday! this week i’m going to talk about the australian shepherd. the australian shepherd is an extremely versatile herding breed. and my ultimate favorite of the herding group with beacerons being a close second!

the aussie is in fact, NOT, australian. the aussie was developed im the united states!

Recognized by the AKC in 1991, this breed started out as a European herder. They made a quick pit stop in australia and then made their way to California, USA.

Happy Breed History Monday! Obviously we’re gonna start with The Yorkshire Terrier! Here is a little snippet copied directly from the AKC breed standard itself
“That of a long-haired toy terrier whose blue and tan coat is parted on the face and from the base of the skull to the end of the tail and hangs evenly and quite straight down each side of body. The body is neat, compact and well proportioned. The dog's high head carriage and confident manner should give the appearance of vigor and self-importance.” The yorkshire terrier is now mostly a companion breed along with a lot of the Toy Breed Group. However don’t let that make you underestimate them. Beneath all that hair and royal demeanor is a heart that beats true terrier. They were used as ratters way before they were classy and fashionable lapdogs. This proves true even with Rexx. He earns his keep by catching mice and I even trained him to chase the squirrels from our bird feeders!

Disclaimer: Rexx is not a well bred yorkie. I do NOT consider him to be a good example of the breed. Comment if you want me to dive deeper into the breed standard or if you’d like to learn about a different breed next!
