The orange is issue is about to be released! 🍊
We are eagerly anticipating the second issue of the hinterlands magazine. It will be out on the 3rd of December!

The orange issue presents 19 visual and written contributions from Europe’s rural regions. Once again, the countryside appears as a place where both our pasts and futures are negotiated: How do we care about available spaces and resources? How can and how could we live? The magazine compiles orange traces in stones and rust, harvest, vegetation and kitchenware.

You can preorder through our bigcartel shop or just write us an email 💌 (mailing server is finally back to work!)

With a passion for spritzy drinks, Nicole Paganini works on all kinds of food questions. She does research on food systems and food justice - mostly in urban Africa. Grown up in the rural Black Forest in Germany, with family roots in rural Italy, Nicole enjoys both - a break from the city in the countryside, and being back in vibrant cities after some days in the hinterlands. For the magazine she portrays her favourite drink and notes how it as well is intertwined with a rural-urban-nexus. 🍹

Ness Lafoy is a designer and researcher interested in small buildings and big landscapes. Her current research, ‘âalp’ - alpine architecture + landscape project, is a collection of ongoing explorations, concerned with all things alpine and with a particular interest in the ‘resortified’ and grafted landscape of the European Alps - the interface between vernacular architecture, man-made intervention, cultural practices and the natural alpine environment. In her hinterlands article she describes the alpine apparatus, bright orange poles, netting and foam buffers that appear during the winter season and turn pastures into ski slopes. 🐄

Meet our next contributor: Lucrezia Travella studied Anthropology and Visual Studies in Siena and Bologna: “I feel the need to explore the convergences between visual art and anthropology. The image is a means to investigate identity, individual and collective memories and to build an empathic and dialogic relationship with places. In the end, each of us is like a leaf, a stone or a clump of earth. We all exist inside the unbounded flow of nature; we care, suffer and heal together.” For hinterlands magazine, she contributes a photo series on a former Bauxite extraction site in the Apulian countryside whose orange-reddish rocks are now a tourist attraction. 🗿

Meet our next contributors to the upcoming orange issue:

Sweet, fleshy, orange, slippery, slick, cozy 🍑 – Canned peaches are a key constituent of modern cake recipes. In “Unite behind the Dosenpfirsich”, Lukas and Alina explore a very alienated product in a rural setting: Canned Peaches, which are harvested on the other side of the world, pealed, canned, and imported to be sold for a few cents in German supermarkets are the protagonists of the societal parable.
After years in cities and abroad, Alina Gombert struggles with having left the rural hinterlands behind and wonders how rural realities could come closer to her socio-ecological utopia. Living in Bonn, Alina likes planting trees at Solawi Alfter, is working for the ministry of agriculture and a master student of crop sciences. Tangled between seclusion and rush, Lukas Dörrie is for now based in deep Westerwald where restless time and townly spaces navigated him. Lukas supports rural development with socio-ecological ideas and feelings to, if possible, breathe some difference.
Snippets of the contributors’ own rural experiences are building blocks for this collage of daily routines and dreams of progress realised through a new generation of thermomix. A peach in the can is worth two in the bush.

Julia Nitschke (.nietzsche), raised in Westphalia, searches for traces of her family history in Gdańsk, although her family comes from Upper Silesia – an entirely different, rural environment. This research constellation was triggered by Emilia Smechowki's book “Return to Poland”, which is set in the city of Gdańsk and offers Nitschke the perfect camouflage: between genealogist and tourist.

Mònica Pagès () is a journalist working on culture, classical music and fine arts. She has published several books, mostly biographical, e.g. on pianist Alicia de Larrocha. She discovered the village of Campelles through photographer Laura van Severen‘s family that gave her the occasion to work together on a project that explores the way and life of women in this tiny rural spot up in the Pyrenees and to discover many different experiences to portrait them with the camera and with words. This approach has opened her a new horizon.

Laura van Severen () is a photographer fascinated by the human capacity to transform landscape and vice-versa. Currently she is working on the project „El Camp d‘Elles“ in collaboration with writer Mònica Pagès which aims to portray the women of the high altitude mountain village of Campelles in the Catalan Pyrenees and the radical changes that have occurred here in the last 100 years. Since her great-grand father opened the „Fonda Costa“ of Campelles at the end of the 1940s, her family always maintained a strong connection to this place. On a personal level the project is a way of connecting to the people of the village as well as to understand the place beyond her experience of the summer holidays.

Jack Butcher () is a journalist, editor and storyteller who is ordinarily based in Kosovo's capital city, Prishtina. His work as deputy editor of a progressive — and at times provocative — urban magazine in a state that is perpetually having to assert its very existence could not be further from his sedate rural upbringing in the foothills of a remote National Park in south west England. After the COVID-19 pandemic forced a temporary return to the village of his childhood, Jack has spent many a day attempting to reconcile two seemingly disparate worlds.

Until recently Marisa Eva () was living in Banyuls retracing her great-aunt‘s footsteps. Lisa Fittko had escaped the Third Reich and continued her work with an international resistance network smuggling refugees over the Spanish border. Marisa‘s piece for hinterlands explores themes of nomadic permanence, division and the spiritual weight of objects. Marisa is a writer, freelancer and educator based in NY and Berlin.

It's time to present the contributors for our issue! Starting with Roman Boichuk (), an analogue photographer from the village Moskaliwka, Ukraine, currently based in Frankfurt Oder, where he is studying a Master in Culture and History of Central and Eastern Europe at the Europa University Viadrina.

"When you meet in Moskaliwka, you are asked rarely, “How are you? What's new?" The only points of contact are the conversations about the different physical work in the field or on the farm. That is why, whenever I am back in Moskaliwka, I spend a lot of time helping in the fields - potato harvest, straw harvest, apple picking, a little help on the farm - in order to revive the lost contact with the villagers. I always have an analogue camera with me".

We are happy and proud to be presented among MagCultures January Coverage! Our rural realities are available in their store in London (and online) now.

This month’s Coverage is a special one. Despite everything – Covid, Brexit, winter – we’ve seen so many new magazines launch that we wanted to highlight our pick of them. In fact, as our notes show, many have come to exist precisely because of the lockdown. Ranging from fashion to juggling v...
