A lot of organizations have woken up to the importance of diversity and inclusion and now understand that it’s not enough for the heads of orgs to recognize it, you have to get everyone on board, says Nadine Gabai-Botero, President at Focus Fundraising.
In fundraising specifically, it’s predominately white and predominately women. There has to be an intentional focus placed on identifying up and coming talent and elevating them. It has to be an area of effort, or else it won’t happen.
So, how do you find donors who have had different experiences, backgrounds and are diverse? This is a great opportunity to focus and nurture your monthly donors and communicate with them new ways with equal weight as you communicate to your major donors.
Open the gates to touchpoints in the community. All are welcome. All share a love of the mission. We want to hear what you have to say whether you can give $250 or $10K. You have to get creative and open yourself up to possibility.

Do not be afraid of change. We should always be continuing to grow, learn, evolve and trying to understand. This is something that needs to be embraced and practiced actively within a team by creating a safe place to have difficult conversations and arriving at a place of being open to change your mind. It’s okay to see something through a new and different perspective. It’s more than okay, it is necessary for inclusivity and innovation.
You get to add more stories to the table. You don’t tell the same stories over and over again because that one story is not everyone’s story. This is when you get to start connecting and resonating with a broader group of people. Nicole Engdahl, Senior Vice President of Planned and Annual Giving at National Park Foundation shares her tips on how to lead a team and develop successful donor campaigns on this episode of the Mission Forward podcast.

Arguably one of the best leaders of our time, Jim Knight, President of Jubilee Housing shared some insights with Carrie Fox on the most recent episode of the Mission Forward podcast about what it has been like being at the helm of an organization during the pandemic.
“Being a leader through the pandemic has been disorienting. Nothing is the same and there is the constant need to adapt to change. I think I’m still learning how to live and lead in this moment right now.”
It has deeply impacted their housing community as people work so diligently to pay rent and they have needed to provide food security for people who have never needed those services before.
When the schools shut down, there were so many gaps in technology and they were able to help fill those gaps and 100% of Jubilee kids remained connected and educated.
They are really proud of that. Because the learning loss this country has experienced is devastating, but they worked really hard to meet that need.
In all ways, “The community really stepped up and it was powerful to see how the need expressed itself and how so many resources were found to meet that need.”

Centering the community was a top priority for Temi F. Bennett, the Director of Policy at if, A Foundation for Radical Possibility. To do this, they recruited members to enroll in cohorts, serve the board and receive a stipend for their contributions. That is equity in action.
“It was important to center community in our work. Not only in the grant space, but to pipeline them in to be active in the role of philanthropy. Overwhelmingly, philanthropy is operated by white males, so how do we activate people of color who are as close to the issue as possible that we are trying to solve.
Everyone talks about racial equity, but for us, it is about creating moments of practice and equity is based on need. We have the uncomfortable conversations around money, around power and we make it our mission to practice what we preach. To do this, we brought in community members in a cohort, paid them a stipend and made sure that they felt supported and empowered to speak up about any power imbalances.”
Temi joined Carrie Fox on the Mission Forward podcast to share about the extraordinary work their organization is doing to advocate for justice, equity and reparations. Listen to the episode now wherever you love to get your podcasts, subscribe, share it with loved ones and leave us a review.

We could do an entire season with our guest today on the benefits and pitfalls of digital media, based on how many questions we get from you all, from our nonprofit clients and our foundation clients and folks who are in this network at Mission Forward about how we show up, how we engage, and quite honestly, even when to walk away from digital and social media.
To help us make sense of some of these trends and answer some of our most pressing questions, Anthony Shop, Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Social Driver and Chairman of the National Digital Roundtable, joins us on the Mission Forward podcast.

This is a time where we can't afford for anyone to be on the sidelines says equity evangelist Natalie S. Burke. There are so many opportunities for people to engage in the world and create the future that they want to see as a reality. How do you do that? You need to do the personal reflective work. It's hard to look at yourself and recognize the work you have to do. One of Natalie’s favorite sayings is, “You cannot swim in dirty water and expect to come out clean.” We have created a culture that has dirty water and we are all swimming in it. The first step is to find out what work we have to do to clean up ourselves. That starts with putting yourself in spaces and environments to create authentic relationships. Don't just check off a list and fill in the blanks when building your influence of diversity. Create opportunities to be in close relationship with one another and connect in a meaningful way. That's where we find the truth. That’s where change happens.Listen to this discussion on how racism hurts us all from the archives of the Mission Forward podcast. In every decision, what side of history are you going to be on? It matters to ask that question in every decision you make as a person, as a business owner, as a person of power within an institution or organization. On this #fbf episode of the #MissionForward podcast, Dr. Rob Kelly of Loyola University Maryland discusses the imperative need to reconcile our past with our future.
To do that, he says we have to start making decisions based on our values. At Loyola, he works to put the students at the center of their decision making and says that "our students are our reason for being." Before any decision is made, they think, pray, research and reflect and this approach is starting to create real systemic change.

Blue Zones: Dan Buettner guests on Mission Forward podcast
The least healthy places are the places that benefit the most. These "food deserts" are where true opportunity lives.
The solution is truly to make physical activity, access to healthy and whole foods and meaningful human interaction as mindless and easy of a choice as possible. AKA "Don't try to change your mind, change your environment."
Hear #BlueZones author Dan Buettner share how his work is changing the lives of people around the world on this episode of the #MissionForward podcast hosted by Carrie Fox.

Dan Buettner on Mission Forward Podcast
The healthiest choice is the natural choice. Dan Buettner works with over 50 cities to make sure that the healthy choice is also the EASY choice through a Blue Zone Pledge.
On this episode of the #MissionForward podcast, Dan discusses that when you change the system and the environment, you can see real impact happen in communities and in the individual lives of people.
Rather than continuing to spend money treating largely avoidable diseases, he works directly with the cities to fix the root of the problem by setting up our cities and work places to function like Blue Zones. When you do that, you can decrease health risks and BMI, expand lifespan and increase joy.
