SOLWEZI COUNCIL RECEIVES 200 WASTE DRUMS AS PART OF WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY CELEBRATIONS
Solwezi Municipal Council has today received a donation of 200 drums from Kansanshi Mining Plc, which will be placed in strategic places across the district for the purpose of disposal of solid waste.
His Worship the Mayor Mr Remmy Kalepa represented by the Deputy Mayor Councillor Alex Pupe in the company of the Town Clerk Mr Kabombo Mutakela received the drums on behalf of the Local Authority during commemoration of World Environment Day today which was held under the theme: “ONLY ONE EARTH”.
North Western Province Permanent Secretary Col. Grandson Wishikoti Katambi (Retired) who graced this year’s World Environment Day celebrations in Solwezi commended the mining firm for supplementing the Council’s efforts in ensuring that residents discard waste in designated places.
Col. Katambi pointed out that the donation couldn’t have come at a better time than today when the district has joined the nation and globe at large in reflecting on the shared responsibility of seeing to it that the environment is safeguarded.
The Permanent Secretary however expressed concern over the continued harm inflicted on planet earth through human activities and therefore called for protection of the environment by avoiding activities that threaten it and people’s health by reducing carbon emissions, recycling of waste and planting of trees, among others.
Col. Katambi also urged the Local Authority to work hand in hand with the Forestry department in ensuring that before building plans are approved, applicants are encouraged to plant trees on their sites as part of saving nature.
He called on residents of Solwezi to collectively focus on the protection of the environment in order to make the earth a better place to live in.
