Throwback Episode of the Week: Ultimate Storytelling
Ft. Julia Campbell
Two Biggest âstorytellingâ obstacles for non for profits organizations
1. The fear that storytelling is going to be unethical or exploitive
There is a common fear, and justified, that organizations are going to exploit the people that they're trying to help with exploitive storytelling.
#1 tip: Rather than showcasing your clients, start out telling stories about your donors, board, and volunteers. BUT Do not assume that your clients do not want to share stories, because it is empowering
2. Nonprofits feel like they do not have the support to get the stories from staff and clients.
#2 Tip: You need to have a clear plan of exactly what you want to do and why. You need to create a plan that has the where and when, how much time, and who you need involved in order to clearly tell the stories of your participants. You need to have all the specifics of how you are going to tell more stories in order to communicate the message to your board and team and get their support.
