“The Dark Web of Deer Hunting”
I was brought up being taught that deer hunting was that one thing that I could always count on. Just being there; away from school and rules, away from work and finances, away from politics, news, and the pain and problems of the world. I was taught that a man could recenter himself by climbing a tree and thinking of nothing in anticipation of everything. My entire life the greatest conversation I could have was with a fellow outdoorsman.
I made plans this morning to do some scouting for the upcoming week’s hunt. As usual, I shared my pins and threw around some strategy with some of my most trusted friends then sat down to eat breakfast and scroll some social media. It didn’t take but a couple seconds and I had read more cursing, hatred, and belittling than I could have found on pages that celebrated racism or spousal abuse, if they were to ever exist. What cut deep was that these were hunting pages. Every one of them.
I don’t want to come across as a prude, because I’m far from it, but at some point there needs to be some accountability for preserving our hunting heritage and what it should represent. There are kids reading and we’re sitting here acting no different than the peer pressure and criticism they try to get away from AND WE ARE ADULTS. Even now someone is reading this wanting to comment some snide remark about folks needing to have a tougher skin. Why? To enjoy deer hunting? Or I should stay off social media, right? No! I want to see and share in everyone’s success! Why is that so difficult?
For all of you channel owners, admins, and moderators: I myself try and grow on social media. It builds brands, generates income, and allows us to do what few ever have the opportunity to do; but read your comments and take some action. You think I’m a hypocrite? Please, read the comments I allow on ANY of my social media. If we do not block and filter out the garbage, it’s all we’ll be left with because the folks that ENJOY the peacefulness of the deer woods won’t be there to support us. Don’t believe me? Go through and see how many times the same people spew the same nonsense in the comments on every post. Why are they still on there? Because you allow it for “growth” while in the meantime your most genuine members and supporters slowly disengage and begin mumbling their disapproval to one another as they unlike, unsubscribe, and unfollow to try and remember why they started hunting in the first place. Allowing this to go on to grow a brand is absolutely no different than sticking your wife in a thong and displaying her on your thumbnail to bump that click percentage. Does it work? Dang right it does! But at what cost? Go to one of those videos with the half naked women and read the comments and you’ll find out.
I’ll give an example of the useless need to have to defend ourselves and our opinions. Read this and try to keep your mind from jumping straight to criticism: I myself have a Summit Mini Viper, a Cruzr Archon, a JX3 Hybrid, and am in the market for a XOP Retrograde. I have a Tethrd predator XL platform as well as the Predator 5 XL. I have Hawk sticks, Skeletors, and Ones, and uses for it all. That is all my favorite equipment and I will probably NEVER buy what you use that is any different. While sharing a video about a great buck last year my skeletors were in the vid as well as my Sitka gear. I got dozens of congratulations and camaraderie and shared the experience as if around the skinning shed back in my childhood hunting camp. Then there were 2. A man child that decided to rant about Sitka as if they kicked his dog, blasting me about it being too hot in Alabama to wear it, cussing all the way. Another attempted to abuse me about shot placement because I took multiple shots as well as the uselessness of using sticks rather than one-sticking. You won’t find those 2 men now or ever on my channel, because they are blocked. Simple. Now everyone can enjoy the platform without some troll sitting in his sweatpants telling us how to hunt.
Everyone is at a different point in their lives as a deer hunter. Everyone has different experiences, equipment, abilities, opportunities, and expectations. Some were raised as deer hunters alongside their fathers and grandfathers while others are trying to learn in REAL TIME, TODAY, from y’all…..from all of us! Don’t make them have to w**d through the B.S. to get from A to B, especially when YOU are in charge of the page or channel. It isn’t fair to those who are trying, those who are the future of the tradition, or to all of us who have to see the slow degradation of the greatest part of our lives. We ALL have an opinion based on our unique experiences and believe it or not, we can ALL help.
There are thousands watching and waiting to engage, to teach, and to share in the congratulations. Stop allowing those comments to be pushed to the end while “crossbows are embarrassments to deer hunting”, “you lost me at nocturnal”, and “why don’t you”, “why should you”, and “why would you ever” horse crap sits atop the comment list as it gets pushed in the algorithm for argument sake. I invite everyone to share in the change and participate in cleaning the pages up if you own them, or leaving them if you disapprove. Let’s do better. Hunting is fun y’all. Try and remember that.
