Bucks are moving and y’all are blasting em! At this rate based on last year, there is a good possibility I will double the number of shoulder mounts brought in. The first 18 are tanned or tanning, and I plan to continue tanning throughout the next couple months to stay ahead of the bombardment. The plan I have in place should bring incredibly fast turnaround times beginning in February, and I will try to update the mount order list every month or so once the season ends. I expect to receive 50-75 in the next 3 weeks during the first major rut cycle. That being said, 1 week of keeping a head in your freezer before dropping off can result in a 2-3 month delay in your mount being completed. Sounds crazy, I know, but I will get 1 year’s worth of work in 3 short insane months, and someone unfortunately has to be last. Thanks to everyone helping me live my dream. This doesn’t surprise me after seeing videos of the same bucks all over properties following different estrous dates of doe groups. I have noticed as a buck ages, he shows up to these estrous “areas” earlier than the younger bucks I believe because he already has historical intel of where he needs to be next, stating a step ahead of the competition.

So you know where your target buck's bed is, huh? Do you know where all 39 beds are?

That's the average number of distinct bedding sites an individual buck used during November alone from one of our recent studies on adult buck movement. A red circle on the map indicates a bed from a single buck during November and each point is a GPS location taken at 15-minute intervals. The rut doesn't occur until late December in this area, so November is still well inside the pre-rut period. Of the 10 bucks we looked at for this, one of them had 71 distinct bedding sites! Most bucks clearly favored some sites over others and returned to some beds multiple times, but most beds were used only once.

There's lots of variation among individual deer for nearly everything we talk about: home range size, movement rates, diet selection, and now bedding sites. Finding a buck's "bedroom" sounds like a great way to punch a tag, but it gets a little more complicated when he uses 39 bedrooms during a single month. One reason bucks might avoid using a single bed site is the same reasons hunters wish they bedded in the same place every night... it makes them more susceptible to predation!
