The Winter Solstice – what does it mean for you?

Do you care, I possibly didn’t in my younger years, now much older, but young at heart I’m learning to work with the rhythms of nature, the solstice has become a yardstick for me. A time to turn inwards and reflect?

I truly love winter, the darker days, closing out the world early and turning on the lights, allowing the warmth to settle in. Learning to slow down and retreat has become something I relish.

The Solstice also reminds me that we’re getting closer to the main holiday Christmas and nostalgia settled in this year. I became curious thinking about what the holidays meant to me. I wanted to feel what that was. What is the essence of the holidays?

That opened the way for bigger questions to enter. Also, it was a great conversation with Carl Nassar that prompted a deeper exploration of this time of year. Isn't it supposed to be the happiest time of the year filled with lights and holiday cheer, except for many especially those grieving or have loved ones overseas or reeling from the death of a colleague or friend in the workplace?

To answer the question, I turned to another friend of the show, Matthew Brackett (PCC, MA, MPS Psych. of Leadership) and you can listen to our conversation coming soon at the weekend.

In the meantime, I’d love to know what this time of year means to you.

If you're curious about Carl's conversation you'll find it here.

Wearing too many hats!

This year I've done triple duty. Not only grief coaching, I became a student in a year-long Positive Intelligence program alongside hosting my Grief show.

So my apologies as I've been absent for a wee bit and not posting my amazing guest shares as I normally have. I love to do this as my way of supporting you and hopefully, others who may be grieving a loss and listening to our words of hope and encouragement.

Since my last post, I'm thrilled to say I've onboarded my allotted number of clients to move forward in my desire to become a certified Positive Intelligence coach.

I'm now practicing what I teach my clients in my PI Mental Fitness Course, the importance of daily PQ gym practice. It's easy and only 12 mins a day, ah the difference in the ease and flow the day takes on as I swat away the pesky moments. Difficult clients - no problem they become my greatest teachers. People not showing up - wonderful moments of R n R for me or time for a
cuppa or time for me to create.

If you'd like to know please get in touch, would be thrilled to share this program as it truly changed my life for the better!

Halloween, when the veil thins and all things ghostly are about!
This was the day our mum chose to leave her body, she died in the arms of her caregiver getting her ready for bed. It was peaceful, she looked peaceful when we arrived minutes after she'd died.
You'd think Halloween would be a huge trigger for me, a reminder of our mother's death. Yes, in the beginning, it was, I refused to have anything to do with the day. Then I realized a) mum would have been cross and would've told me to Stop It. b) it was the best possible day for mum to leave us. She loved fun, children and chocolate, how could I not honour her memory, so now instead of sadness, her memory brings joy as I now think of her.

With all the negative news out there, it's nice to see some positivity. I'm so glad that I can keep in touch with my friends and family on Facebook – it makes me feel connected despite being far away. A big thank you to everyone who has helped make this possible! :)

Had a discussion with a coach with 25 years of expertise, a podcast host and an ordained minister, Donna Tashjian. We spoke about how her life changed at 17. She had a choice and with the support of her faith, she chose to change her mindset and now teaches workshops on how others can change their mindset and turn their Baggage into Luggage.
Here's what we discussed

I'm always amazed at how resilient humans are in overcoming trauma and failed relationships. My recent guest Susan Gold had a successful career on the outside however her inside world wasn't working so well. We often think about how wonderful others' lives are but are they really?
How did this successful business woman who was once Barbara Walters' personal trainer and convinced Andy Warhol to do a commercial, find herself living in the unfinished part of her home while the couple was divorcing?

In case you missed Day #1 In this week of celebrating 75 interviews for the Podcast, I'm going back to the beginning when I reached out and asked to interview, author, and journalist Kevin Toolis about his new book My Father's Wake: How the Irish Teach Us to Live, Love and Die - This is #1. Being from the UK, I knew and had heard about Irish Wakes, but had personally never attended one. I was fascinated when I heard Kevin share, that in Ireland in one small town, the death announcement would be made on the radio. People from miles around would go and honour the dead person and lend comfort and support to the family. Often Kevin, said there would be the keening women a traditional form of vocal lament and mourning for the dead to help the family and others cry or weep. Our time together was over Skype and lasted 90 mins. I was fascinated by his story. Being a novice editor I cut the interview down into 3 sections - WHY because I didn't think people would listen to a Podcast for that length of time. Not realizing most people just pause and then return. I did say this was the first official interview of my Podcast career with so much to learn. Kevin was so gracious and I appreciated our time together. To listen to Kevin's

In this week of celebrating 75 interviews. Here's my first, I reached out and asked. Terrified as I do so that the answer would be No. Then I recalled the answer is always No unless you ask. Ask I did, and Kevin Toolis graciously spent 90 mins over Skype in those days chatting to me a very novice Podcast host.
Here's his TEDX talk on why we need to demystify grief https://www.tedmed.com/talks/show?id=771245

How do you learn to live again when your only child is murdered by someone you once loved? This was one of the hardest interviews I did recently, with our guest Michelle Hord and I'm deeply honoured she trusted me to share her story with you the listeners. Michelle is a media exec and producer.

As a new grad Michelle found herself producing on the show America's Most Wanted and never dreamt as she sat with families and listened to their stories she'd be on the other side of the yellow tape. Michelle's story is devastating, heartbreaking and unimaginable to say the least. However, despite her grief being so public, she found strength through her faith and support from others around her. She found her other side of Yet and has built an amazing Legacy for her daughter Gabrielle in her memory, Gabrielle's Wings. Her full story can be found in her book The Other Side of Yet: Finding Light in the Midst of Darkness or listen to Michelle as she shares her story. https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/lets-talk-about-grief-with-anne/id1435084694?i=1000625752112

Tapping into Unresolved Grief and Stuck Emotions.
Today’s topic is going to be around grieving unresolved grief. How can you recognize if you may have some lingering, unresolved grief?

We’re also going to be passing a modality called EFT and how it benefits grief. Stay tuned, as we will be doing some demonstrations too!

I am absolutely thrilled and excited to speak with my two guests on the show, Jeanne Demers and Natalie Glynn, who are the co-creators of Choose Your Life Coaching, which uses cutting-edge tools and modern psychology and neuroscience. Jeanne is the author of Blood: How to Stop Hating the Things That Make You Who You Are. She also uses the Hero’s Journey and EFT among her many tools to help her clients. And Natalie also uses EFT and has lost 100 pounds of her weight as a result. Natalie specializes in trauma, addiction, weight loss, relationships, and codependency.

Our recent guest Zane Landin shared his grief story on the show about the death of his mom at the start of Covid. Grieving a parent's loss is hard at any age but when you're starting out in life graduating college, first internships and many other accomplishments, it's a challenge to not have the parent there that was your biggest cheerleader and to share in your joy.
Zane's desire to help and support others is one of the reasons he wanted to speak out to help others know more about the grief journey.
He’s a mental health and disability advocate, q***r rights activist, and body positivity proponent. He's an authentic storyteller, communication explorer, writer, award-winning poet, entrepreneur, and positive change maker, Zane earned his Bachelor of Science in Communication and Public Relations. He's also founded the Positive Vibes Magazine, which is a digital magazine dedicated to telling authentic stories about mental health and inspiration.

But "WHY"
As humans haven't we always asked this question to make sense of our world? We did so as children "but why" I feel certain many parents can relate.
Here I'm asking that very question "Why" was this castle built and for what purpose? Castel del Monte is a 13th-century citadel situated on a hill in Andria in the Apulia region of southeast Italy and linked to the Nights Templar.
We ask Why in Grief
A much better question to ask would be "What" as in what could I do now?

This week's topic on the Podcast was pet loss and the immense sadness and grief pet owners experience. Our guest Sara Bader has experienced profound grief over losing her 13-year-old cat. And she, too, searched and looked for answers from others that could help guide her through. Here’s what (or who) we talk about:

- A cute introduction of who Snowflake, Sara’s late cat, was.
- How pets are intertwined with our lives.
- Her way of dealing with her loss is through the writings of others.

Sara's an editor, writer, researcher, and author. She has worked as an editor for Princeton Architectural Press as a senior editor for Phaidon. The Book of Pet Love and Loss is her latest work.

Truly an honour to share our recent guest with you today, Dr. Lee Warren, and who better to be discussing the topic of grief than a neurosurgeon? Wouldn't you want a prescription of how to navigate your grief from someone who truly understands the workings of our brain? In his latest book, Hope is the First Dose, A Treatment Plan for Recovering from Trauma Tragedy and Other Massive Things you will find just that. Now available.
Truly it was a delight to be back in the OR with Dr. Warren, once upon a time I was a scrub nurse and worked with surgeons. This was a delightful treat, and I even better understand grief.

It isn't every day you get to interview one of your teachers. On the Podcast recently, I had the honour of speaking to Karla McLaren the author of The Language of Emotions. Karla was my first teacher in my grieving process and her book helped me understand my emotions.

In this episode, we’re talking about grief itself. How many of us know what to do when we're experiencing grief? Certainly, it isn't something that's taught or modelled very often. So, it's natural we flounder in its midst. I'm certain there'll be a deeper understanding of grief and its purpose by the end of our time together.

Grieving a loss takes time for our minds and bodies time to adjust to the new reality. What happens to that grief if space and time aren't given to grieving in a way that works for you? The grief pushed away doesn't leave but goes inwards and waits patiently as our guest Lindsey Rogers-Seitz discovered. Due to circumstances, not in her control was unable to grieve for the couple's son Ben for almost 8 years. Her story reminds us of the need to grieve as soon as we can and for others in her story to recognize this very human need. What a year we've had.

I love interviewing my guests, I learn so much from them too!

My guests share their own perspectives about their grief and how they themselves navigated the challenges on their grief journey You'll note also where they are today because of their loss.

You'll learn more about this in this year's interviews - we're changing things up a little. Hope you will join us as we attempt to normalize grief and not fear it. There is often laughter during our interviews!

Grief is messy. It's the opposite of linear. It can be dark and wacky, lonely or not, love-filled or seemingly lacking - but it is so very alive. No two people experience this process in quite the same way. These Podcasts are conversation starters for dealing with dying, death and grief part therapy...
