It’s International Translation Day! Over the years, we have had the privilege of translating groundbreaking foreign literature from all over the world into Maltese – and we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon! What’s better than a school visit? Being asked to return to read the sequel! Last year I did a virtual visit to a lovely primary school in Massachusetts, where I read ‘Ellie and the Cupcakes.’ This afternoon, I’m going to read ‘Oh, Ellie!’ to them. I can’t wait! ❤️

I had no money growing up. My dad was a labourer and my mum did everything to make ends meet. Men worked hard. Women worked miracles. But education was free. As was the local library. I knew books were my passport to a better life.

This has to be one of my favourite stories by the fabulous Amanda Kidd.

I think I always loved the part in Alice in Wonderland where Alice changed size. Such a great way to change our perspective on things and look at our existing world in a new way.

Ellie is an adventurous girl and she also loves CUPCAKES! This is a marvellous story about what happens when she makes wishes to be a giant by a wishing well and the problems that ensue.

I love the little touches in this, like the cupcake recipe in the back of the book! A perfect Christmas gift for any cupcake fan!

FEATURE: Singing Frog Star Spotlight

I'd like to shine a light each week on someone or something special.

Today's guest is Amanda Kidd who has written at least four amazing children's picture books to my knowledge. My particular favourite is Ellie and the Cupcakes, about a little girl who (understandably) wants to be really small so she can eat enormous cupcakes!

The story has everything, I love the beautiful illustrations, great prose and sense of humour. As an author, what makes it stand out for me is the extra activities in the back of the book and even a recipe! I was influenced by this book to try something similar in the back of The Button and the Bean.

So I thought we'd like to know a bit more about Amanda - so I asked her: (My guess in brackets!)

What is your favourite biscuit? (My Guess: Bourbon Cream)

Amanda: Ginger biscuits we had in Lapland. They were served with warm berry juice and we had them by the fire, the crunch was indescribable. I also like to think that this is what my character Pip (in ‘Pip Saves Christmas’) was given after he saved the elves.

What is your favourite colour? (My guess - Yellow)

Amanda: Anything bright. The type of brightness depends on my mood, but orange is always a safe bet.

Julian : (so I wasn't too far out on this one!)

What is your favourite song? (My guess -Chocolate Cake - Crowded House)

Amanda: How can I choose? There are so many wonderful artists with unbelievably great songs… but I think I’ll go for Pink Floyd: High Hopes
