GIC Story: A Relentless JOURNey

We have come a long way together. Every piece of paper is our shoe, every drop of ink is our fuel, every unique story is our wing, and everything that has to be told will be our goal. Indeed, each of us has encountered tough days to face and embrace --- as countless obstacles tried to block us on the way. We, the campus journalists of GIC, remind ourselves with one

thing --- to desire not just to win every competition and reach every finish line but to learn from every struggle to not step back so we can achieve our greater goal. We will always be READY, SET, and GO for a relentless JOURNey! READY
It was three oโ€™clock in the afternoon when the iconic bell sound awakened Paradisian souls, thinking that they have just reached their finish lines for the day but it's not the case for us. We immediately packed our bags and prepared ourselves again, for we were just getting ready for another lap to run. We started from weekdays, adjusted it to three days a week until it became two days. We consume the rest of our day in packing new learnings to help us in our JOURNey. It is the time when we unconsciously "emerge" as we improve in writing, revising, editing, capturing, drawing, brainstorming and all the other journalistic tasks repeatedly. We underwent trainings and seminars to be able to learn all the ways, styles, and categories of writing. Time passed and we were transformed to be the greatest athlete of ourselves. Our SPAs guided us and brought out the best in us to emerge as responsible campus journalists. SET
In our run, we have obstacles as our luggage. We had our 'stops' just like any other high school student. We started with the number of 14 but only eight stayed. We had our frustrations and desperations due to a lot of responsibilities to carry as students and journalists that we sometimes fail to juggle. But, these didn't easily strip off our aspirations to serve the people. Our eagerness to write helped us to continue every single day. We weren't taught to merely cry like a dog battered in the street. We echo the voice of the voiceless and this will be our 'undying passion'. As we take the next step in our JOURNey, Ma'am Imelda Montes, retired English Department head, decided to give a name for the aspiring journalists like us to be recognized. This was the birth of Green Ink Chronicles in the S.Y. 2017-2018 with a tagline "EMERGE. PREVAIL.", as suggested by Mr. Jorell Finez, a former GIC sports writer. The newsletter version, PFNHS Express back then, was initiated by Miyaka Rhinoa Reyes until finally, the first publication of GIC was made and spearheaded by Editor-In-Chief Hana Coyoca in the school year 2017-2018 while Jobelle Morato and D Jay Love Moreno took charge in the following years. GO
We strive but it will be never enough. We have reached a lot of milestones, a lot of first times, and a lot of achievements for running the GIC in three years and more. We have gone through a lot of obstacles but here we are, still going through in and outside of the campus. We prevail through our service and extend it in social media. Since we only publish the school newspaper once a year and not all news will be included there, this page was created-a platform used to update all Paradisians whenever there's a breaking news in our school and other important announcements. We never stopped, we just pause for a while, rest, and GO again. That's the story behind the lotus which represents the GIC. Just like a lotus, we managed to bloom gracefully inspite of coming from a seed that grew in a mud from a troubled water in a river. Every drop of our tears from hardships became a way of giving and refilling the colors to our passionโ€”like an ink that fades and runs out in some hard times. READY, SET, GO! Then a bang from a gun has shot, signaling to start a new marathon for us to run, a new JOURNey. There's no stepping back once we set our goals and go for it. We are now READY enough to serve not just in our school, PFNHS, but also for the public. We are SET to be a journalist in our own right once and forever, and we will GO with the package of learnings, not with the luggage of obstacles. We are now on the march, running for the people and leading for the truth. News has no rest and so we'll continue. There will be no more finish line for us to stop, just new laps to restart.

On this day, September 8, the world unites to celebrate International Literacy Dayโ€”a day dedicated to one of the most transformative tools available to humanity: literacy. More than just the ability to read and write, literacy is the key to unlocking opportunities, breaking the chains of poverty, and paving the way for sustainable development and education for all.

The purpose of International Literacy Day is clear: to remind the global community that literacy is not a privilege but a fundamental human right. Literacy serves as the foundation upon which we build brighter futures, empowered communities, and a world where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential. It is a beacon of hope for millions who yearn for a better life.

Literacy is the driving force behind personal and societal progress. It empowers individuals with knowledge and confidence, equipping them to properly handle the complexities of modern life. When people have access to quality education and the ability to read, they can make informed decisions, improve their livelihoods, and become active contributors to society.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognize this powerful link between literacy and development. One of the targets of SDG 4 is to ensure that all young people achieve literacy and that adults who lack these skills are given the opportunity to acquire them. By prioritizing literacy, we commit to a future where everyoneโ€”regardless of age, gender, or backgroundโ€”has the chance to learn, grow, and thrive.

Education is the bridge that connects individuals to the world of possibilities. Without literacy, that bridge is broken, and entire communities are left isolated. For many children, especially in impoverished regions, the inability to read and write is not just a barrier to educationโ€”it is a barrier to hope.

International Literacy Day is a call to action for governments, institutions, and individuals to ensure that every child has access to quality education. It is a reminder that education should be inclusive, equitable, and accessible to all. By investing in education, we are investing in the future of humanity.

Through literacy, the world envisions a future where no one is left behind. A true champion of this vision is Mang Nanie, a 72-year-old grandpa from Makati. In a humble corner of the city, Mang Nanie has turned his home into a public library, offering free access to books and knowledge to everyone who walks through his doors. His selfless dedication embodies the spirit of International Literacy Day. Though he had little to give, he recognized the immense power of literacy to change lives and decided to share what he could.

As we celebrate International Literacy Day, let us remember that literacy is not a gift that should be limited to a fewโ€”it is a right that must be extended to all. It is a force that can lift individuals out of poverty, empower communities, and drive global development.
Let this day serve as a reminder that literacy is the key to a brighter, more equitable world. It is the path to empowerment, the doorway to opportunity, and the foundation of a future where no one is left behind. As we light the way for others, may we inspire generations to come to embrace the power of literacy and unlock their full potential.

Together, we can write a future filled with hope and opportunity with the bridge towards endless possibility.

"A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth."
Proverbs 14:6

It's either you hate the truth or you love it. One cannot be forced to understand what he/she does not want to understand.

Wisdom cannot be found without seeking it from the One who is the source of everything--God. While a person may pretend to have or find it, he/she will not be able to fully gain it unless he/she asks and receives it from God.

A "scoffer" arrogantly mocks what they don't understand: the person who sneers at truth instead of learning from it. Proverbs 1:7 says that "wisdom" is godly truth. In that sense, the idea of a scoffer seeking wisdom seems self-contradictory because he/she looks to sources other than the Lord. Scoffers bypass the spiritual path to wisdom because they are conceited and they think they can obtain wisdom by just rationalizing things or applying their mind to life's mysteries. They only accept what they want to hear and stubbornly ignore what they don't like, instead of submitting to what's real.

However, this kind of worldly wisdom is no match for the wisdom of God. Someone who respects God and submits to truth gains knowledge and wisdom naturally because he/she looks to the Lord for enlightenment instead of to himself/herself. :)

"The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want."
Proverbs 13:25

Real contentment is not found in what fills the belly, but in that which fills the spiritโ€”strengthening our inner man as we walk from earth into eternity.

Even if godly people may not always eat as exquisitely as some wicked people, what they eat satisfies them. That is how they are different. The wicked may eat delicious food, but they don't get fully satisfied and they crave for something more always.

This proverb even goes beyond food. The idea of contentment is essential to one's happiness in life, and it applies in all areas of life. 1 Timothy 6:6 states that godliness with contentment is great gain. Also, Jesus said, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4). It takes more than just food to satisfy a person. If he takes delight in God's Word, he finds true satisfaction. Whatever the circumstances are, he remains at peace with God, and he always finds comfort in knowing that his life pleases God.

However, the wicked who reject the Word of God and the God of the Word do not experience this kind of peace as they always crave something that they think might satisfy their soul, but they cannot obtain it.

May we feast on what could truly satisfy us for good, putting our hope and delight in the things that would last beyond the here and now. :)

โ€œHe that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him quickly.โ€
Proverbs 13:24

A child's growth starts at the sweet cradle of his home, with his parents supporting him like a crane would. But in the aspect when the child starts to be deviant and disrespects his own parents, his morality starts to get stained.

When a child starts to be deviant, it is wise to discipline him. It is a way to correct and guide, rather than to hurt and shame. For if discipline is not followed, his simple demeanor in deviance will worsen as he grows. As Proverbs 22:6 says, train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. Teaching and disciplining children while they are young is a vital process that must never be forgotten for the nature of their childhood and how they were brought up will constantly reflect in their interaction with others.

If you choose not to chastise your son, you aren't committed enough to building him a meaningful future. But if you do choose the opposite, consider it not an act of authority but an act of love for you love your son enough to care about how he should be raised. It is important to remember that while discipline is firm, it can protect your child from greater harm.

With patience as deep as the oceans and hope as bright as the stars, they nurture the minds of tomorrow, giving everything without asking for return. Their legacy is written not in textbooks, but in the lives forever changed by their presence. Today, and every day, we honor the ones who give us the courage to learn, to grow, and to become more than we ever thought possible.

Each year, from September 5 to October 5, the Philippines celebrates National Teachersโ€™ Month, a time to recognize and honor the incredible contributions of teachers to society. These dedicated professionals shape our nationโ€™s future, one student at a time, often going beyond the call of duty to make a lasting difference in the lives of countless learners. Their influence extends far beyond the walls of the classroom, shaping minds, hearts, and the future of the country.

As many believes, teachers are the bedrock of any society. They play a crucial role in guiding students toward success and helping them develop the skills they need to navigate lifeโ€™s challenges. Whether itโ€™s the basic literacy taught in early years, or the complex critical thinking nurtured in later stages, teachers are at the core of every studentโ€™s journey.

However, the significance of their role often goes unnoticed. The hours spent preparing lessons, the patience they exhibit, the emotional and intellectual support they provideโ€”all of this contributes to the holistic development of students. National Teachersโ€™ Month is a reminder to recognize and appreciate this commitment, showing gratitude for their tireless efforts in molding future leaders, thinkers, and changemakers.

In recent years, teachers have faced unprecedented challenges, particularly during the global pandemic. As schools closed, educators were forced to rapidly adapt to new modalities, embracing online platforms, creating engaging virtual lessons, and finding innovative ways to keep students motivated from a distance. Despite the difficulties, teachers stood resilient, ensuring that learning continued.

For many, teachers became lifelines, offering stability and guidance in uncertain times. They provided not just academic support, but emotional comfort to students struggling with the stress and isolation of the pandemic. In many ways, their role extended beyond education, as they helped students cope with the realities of a changed world.

National Teachersโ€™ Month isnโ€™t just a celebrationโ€”itโ€™s a call to action. Itโ€™s an opportunity for communities, students, and parents to come together and show their gratitude. Whether through heartfelt messages, thoughtful gifts, or public recognition, small acts of appreciation can go a long way in showing teachers how valued they truly are.

Moreover, this month serves as a reminder to advocate for better support systems for teachers. This includes not only fair compensation but also access to professional development opportunities, mental health resources, and a work environment that fosters growth and innovation. By investing in teachers, we are investing in the future of our society.

As we celebrate National Teachersโ€™ Month, let us reflect on the immeasurable impact that teachers have on our lives. From the basics of reading and writing to the complexities of lifeโ€™s challenges, they provide the foundation upon which individuals and societies thrive. Their influence is felt in every success story, every breakthrough, and every dream realized.

To all the teachers who continue to inspire, uplift, and educateโ€”thank you. Your work matters more than words can express, and the future is brighter because of your dedication.

Letโ€™s celebrate those who have committed their lives to building a better tomorrow for all of us. You might not be written in books, but your legacy will always be engraved in our lives. Happy National Teachersโ€™ Month!

โ€œMuch food is in the tillage of the poor: But there is that is destroyed for want of judgment.โ€
Proverbs 13:23

Imagine two fields side by side. One is owned by a diligent but humble farmer, the other by a man of great wealth who lacks discernment. Despite his lack of resources, the humble farmer works tirelessly to till his land. He carefully plants seeds, nurtures the soil, and prays for rain. His field, though small, yields a bountiful harvest, enough to feed his family and share with his neighbors. His wisdom in tending the land, born out of necessity and faith, brings abundance.

Now, look at the field of the wealthy man. His land is vast, and he spares no expense in purchasing the finest seeds. Yet, he neglects the wisdom needed to cultivate his crops. He neither plows the field properly nor waters the plants consistently. He is too proud to seek advice, believing his wealth will guarantee success. In the end, his crops wither and die, destroyed not by external forces, but by his own lack of judgment and understanding.

However, this proverb tells honestly about how evil people can take prosperity away from the righteous, particularly when the rich take advantage of those who are poor. While a poor man may work his land and earn enough to put food on the table, he/she may lose it quickly when unjust people steal what the land produces.

Diligent work, combined with wisdom, can lead to abundance, even when resources are scarce. However, there are still times when unjust people spoil and limit this abundance.
When there is a lack of judgment and justiceโ€”whether in farming, decision-making, or spiritual mattersโ€”opportunities are wasted, and what could have been fruitful is destroyed. The humble farmerโ€™s field flourishes because he combines effort with wisdom, much like those who hear and understand God's words, even if unrighteous people will try to destroy it. Meanwhile, the wealthy manโ€™s field, despite its potential, fails because he lacks the discernment to manage it wisely, echoing the seeds that fall on rocky ground and wither away.

โ€œA good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.โ€
Proverbs 13:22

You reap what you sow. But, are you truly gaining from what you are sowing or just getting low from what you are planting?

An individual who is not just righteous but also wise is not only blessed with abundant wealth such as wisdom and blessings. He/she will also leave a mark of great legacy for future generations. They are brilliant, generous, and humble enough to know what is meant to be done as they seek our Almighty God, and that is what makes them wealthy not just physically, but spiritually as well.

On the contrary, wicked people are too conceited as they don't seek God first. Their selfishness may only reap a materialistic and temporary wealth that will later vanish from their hands or will somehow result in their downfall. Nevertheless, their wealth would eventually go to those people who are just and smart and indeed deserve to be awarded bountiful benefits.

With this verse today, let us always choose to possess righteousness and faithfulness whenever we act, think, and decide anytime and anywhere. Moreover, may we always remember that seeking God first would help us produce better outcomes which could also benefit those individuals in the future. We are the role models of future generations, and we are made and bound to sow a great legacy, not a heritable immorality.

"Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repaid."
Proverbs 13:21

The path of sin may seem tempting or easy, but you won't notice how undesirable its destination is upon walking on it. But if you choose to walk the path of light, even though it may seem challenging at times, it guarantees a reward.

The result of everything we do represents us. As Matthew 12:33 says, "Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit."

Therefore, we should not only focus on the actions we commit but also on the reason/s behind them. We must cultivate a good heart so that our actions will also be good. Another verse from Matthew 12:35 says, "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man, out of the evil treasure of his heart, bringeth forth evil things."

For those who feel challenged in choosing the right path, be glad because Jesus is working in your life. Where you go depends on where you start, therefore, better make wise choices today. :)

"He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed."
Proverbs 13:20

"Tell me who your friends are, and I'll tell you who you are."

The Bible quite strongly affirms that sentiment. In spending time in the Word, we find that we are warned on who we live our lives with. We find verses such as these (1 Cor. 15:33, 2 Cor 6:14), wherein we are reminded that we are easily impressionable.

Much like a good apple, sweet and ripe, we can be corrupted. Surround a good apple with a few rotting ones, and see how the good one rots as well. Similarly, surround yourself with people who strive to fulfill their pride, and see how you'll soon do likewise (Psa. 1:1). This, the Bible says, should not be the case, indeed the opposite.

Instead of being the one changed by the world, we are called to change the world, to bring more people closer to God (Mat. 28:18โ€“20). Indeed, rather than we be influenced, Jesus calls on us to influence those around us. Because on the flip side, if you surround yourself with people who seek God (Mat. 6:33), you'll see how you'll soon do likewise.

Therefore, be wise in choosing who you hold near and become friends with (Prv. 12:26). Guard your hearts (Prv. 4:23) from the bad influence of the world. Be aware and wise with the small habits you may be passing off as "just normal" โ€” be it having bad influence friends, being unforgiving, telling lies, cursing, or whatever else that the world convinces you is just harmless behavior.

Clouds cry when they get too heavyโ€”and the rain shapes its gentle patterns, as each raindrop falls seamlessly and comes together to form one.

Just like the raindrops, isnโ€™t it fascinating how we, humans, can never live without the ways we all come together? This Sep-TEAM-ber, itโ€™s finally our time to join hands as we enter the second month of this school year and the first month among the so-called โ€œberโ€ months when the yuletide season begins to set in, filling the atmosphere with gaiety.

As the 1st Quarter Examinations will already take place on the third week of September with a possibility of Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) classes due to typhoons and school activities that require the participation of teachers, it is definitely enjoyable and worthwhile to work or study together at times, rather than just isolating oneself always. Maximize the opportunities to learn from productive brainstorming and collaborations with classmates, friends, and clubmates whom we treat as a family at school. When academic responsibilities or duties become too heavy to bear already, why donโ€™t we fall together like raindrops that patter on roofs, roads, or soils, that trap tiny bubbles on the surface then shoot upward and burst out of the drop, throwing aerosols of scent into the air where they are then distributed by the windโ€“creating petrichor, a familiar smell of rain? Petrichor is just so earthy and pleasant that one could appreciate nature or reflect on life because of it. What a scentโ€“small yet impactful or lasting scent so to speak.

We can also make our passion for and perseverance towards learning last long like petrichor if we widen our world more. What better way to do that than to open our hearts to others and learn to work in harmony with them? Appreciating the value of teamwork and solidarity makes things more bearable, as we have a whole lot of undertakings to go through and storms to brave this month. We can be like the sepak takraw team or any other representing team of our school who always values unity as they train and compete together during athletic tilts. ๐Ÿซ‚

For one, let us combine our strengths to form something extraordinary this Childrenโ€™s Cancer Awareness Monthโ€”where we give pediatric cancer survivors the honor and a glimpse of the tender future they deserve. Thatโ€™s why we cling to the hope that the rain will someday stop; just like how the Cancer Warriors Foundation and Cancer Coalition Philippines have joined hands to raise awareness for pediatric cancer while looking for hair donors.

However, as raindrops, before we get to join a bigger river, we first have to focus on our own thing and land from the clouds gracefully. As the school year has only started, students have yet to adjust to the new curriculum, and group work is one thing many may struggle with. Yet, it does not have to remain a struggle or problem, but rather, an asset to be maximized to its fullest potential. To create a masterpiece with merged talents, we must combine our abilities with a strong desire to not just survive, but to thriveโ€”shoulder to shoulder.

After all, no man is an island. No matter how hard you fall, even from the skies, there will always be arms that are willing to catch youโ€”togetherness in disguise.

So, cheers to ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ง๐—˜๐—”๐— ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ, where raindrops collide and glimmer together. ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ’ง

"The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil."
Proverbs 13:19

It is easy to set goals and think of one's accomplishments, but translating the goals into action despite the circumstances hindering us from pursuing them is a tougher undertaking.

We feel a sense of accomplishment when we achieve a goal. There is a deep satisfaction and happiness within, however sinful urges lead to ruin and disappointment. Sadly, there are foolish people who cannot set aside their sins so they end up rejecting God even more deeply. Rather than repent by recognizing evil and choosing what's good, they remain in sin.

Each of us has a purpose in God's Kingdom. We are all commissioned to adhere to the heavenly vision because it is the real thing that would satisfy us. Paul is a great example of this. At the end of his life, Paul enjoyed the satisfaction of attaining his goal as he said in 2 Timothy 4:6โ€“7: "The time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

How about us? May we continue to live in awe of God's perfect love so we'll always find satisfaction in the desires that He has planted in our hearts.

"Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honored."
Proverbs 13:18

Honor is never being full of oneself, but being filled with humility in accepting one's own strengths and weaknesses.

"Reproof" means correction; however, there are people who disregard instruction.
Solomon repeatedly warns about the hardships brought on by being stubbornโ€”by ignoring good advice. Generally speaking, those who refuse to be corrected put themselves on a path to failure.

The ability to accept teachingโ€”to "heed reproof"โ€” is an asset in one's learning and growth as an individual. We also need to follow instructions from others and ignoring them impedes our ability to learn how to accomplish a task. However, a person who willingly receives correction and instruction performs each task successfully, therefore he/she is warmly appreciated and honored by those around him/her. :)

Small, unnoticed cracks can make a prosperous and united country slowly crumble. While a minor flaw may not shatter society, it can change oneโ€™s perception of their environment. After all, wearing rose-tinted glasses can render us blind and distort our judgment.

As we celebrate National Press Freedom Day and Marcelo H. Del Pilarโ€™s contributions to journalism and freedom of the press, this day serves as a reminder of the vital role that a free press plays in a democratic society and honors the legacy of Del Pilar and all those who have fought and are still fighting to make the cracks of society seen in the country.

Our democracy stands on a kaleidoscopic world that constantly changes through the rotation of time, may it be through suppression or the blossoming of the voices. Nonetheless, journalists are the storytellers who illuminate the cracks and controversies that lie beyond the rose-tinted glasses.

However, one doesnโ€™t have to be a journalist to see the cracks of society or to be the eye of the blind and the voice of the unheard. While the perspectives of the masses are blurred from how they should see the world, simply having the knowledge to know and understand what kind of world you are living in will help you see beyond the blur. Every individual has a role in removing the blindfolds and being an eye opener where truth can be seen through the kaleidoscopic eyehole that theyโ€™ll make.

It's good to see the world through rose-tinted glasses, but it's better to understand and be aware of the realities behind our rose-tinted glasses so that we can collectively find positive strides to fill the cracks. In that way, we can wisely discern how to see things in a positive light and shift our eyes to what is right.
