About Us

du Coeur: Journal of Applied Humanities is interdisciplinary project seeking to publish an array of works that explore the human condition and what it means to live well through the application of philosophy, religion, language, history, and the arts to everyday life.

“Du Coeur” is French for “from the heart.” This name was chosen to convey our commitment to publishing works that are as committed to sincerity and integrity as erudition. The name was also inspired by Rollo May’s observation that the origin of the word “courage” stems from the French word for heart. As he writes in The Courage to Create, “The word couragecomes from the same stem as the French word coeur, meaning ‘heart.’ Thus just as one’s heart, by pumping blood to one’s arms, legs, and brain enables all the other physical organs to function, so courage makes possible all the psychological virtues. Without courage other values wither away into mere facsimiles of virtue.”

The name reflects this journal’s concern for publishing works that emphasize the relevance of the humanities to ordinary life.
