ARREST: On 2/28/2022, BPPD responded to a “Grandparent Scam” being actively perpetrated on our residents. The caller pretended to be a Public Defender and stated their son had been in a crash and was in jail. They requested over $12,000 in a secret bail agreement for their son’s release. Detectives coordinated with the victims, who were instructed to give the money to a “bail bondsman” arriving at the house. A short time later, the suspects arrived and were taken into custody. Noel Medrano-Abreu, 29, of New Jersey and Wilson Burgos Hernandez, 23, of the Dominican Republic were arrested and charged with multiple felonies including: Corrupt Organizations, Dealing in the Proceeds of Illegal Activity, Criminal Conspiracy, Criminal Use of Communication Facility, Criminal Attempt Theft by Deception, and Criminal Attempt Theft by Unlawful Taking. These scams are often part of a much larger organized crime involving multiple people in the US and abroad who take advantage of elderly residents. If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a family member in distress, hang up and call that family member yourself, or contact police for assistance. Don’t let these criminals take advantage of your emotions. All Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Lately, there have been several Facebook accounts being hacked, so here are some tips to help keep your account and private information safe:

1. Hide your contact information on your profile to, “Only Me,” or remove it completely. Hackers will ask for that information to send and receive verification codes.
2. Don’t use the same password that you are using somewhere else. If a company has been hacked, that places your information at risk. Try having a password generator create a strong password for you. Most new smartphones now have that feature.
3. Turn on two-factor authentication. If someone tries to access your account from a device that hasn’t been previously used, a code will be sent to you. Unless you know for a fact that you have requested a code, just ignore it. Do not give that code to anyone whatsoever.
4. Hide your friends list. Chances are that someone on your friends list has been hacked, so hiding your friends list prevents hackers from viewing it in order to access other accounts.
5. Verify who you are communicating with. If someone that you do not know personally asks for your number, ignore it. If someone you do know personally asks for your number and you feel that they should already have your number, ask for a voice message to prove it’s them.

If you follow these tips, you will be able to help protect your Facebook account and private information against malicious individuals.
