Episode 9 - Coronavirus & Coaches

In Episode 9 we discuss the current situations and challenges created by Covid-19 and talk about about Ben's relationships with his coaches growing up. It was recently announced that Andrew Lord is leaving the Cardiff Devils after 6 years as the Head Coach and for the whole of Ben's Devils career. We talk about what made Lordo such a good coach and what he had in common with the other great coaches that Ben has been lucky enough to play for.

Pasi talks to us about his career and how he ended up coming over to Britain (Dan can’t stop referring to Hull as Kingston), he talks about going through his career in Britain, his struggles, how he changed his mindset and outlook to make hockey more fun and discusses what a young Ben was like when they first met! It’s here!

In Episode 7 we talk everything GB surrounding the 2019 IIHF World Championships including preparation, more wake up calls and the introduction to the speed at that level.

We breakdown each game individually including what went well and what mistakes were made and learned from.

We also discuss the things players have to account for when offers come in from abroad, we discuss why the "Big Fish in Small Pond" tag that's put on Brits isn't quite as simple as fans believe and then we touch on why Brits shouldn't really be seen as "Just Brits" or a "just a neccesity" in the EIHL while explaining why EIHL teams need Brits so much if they want to win anything within the Elite League.

With the IIHF World Championships in main focus recently, we decided to discuss Ben's journey so far from u18s right through to where he is now with the Team GB Men's team. There's a very common theme of sharp learning curves and big "wake up calls"...one of the biggest ones Ben ever had came from Paul Thompson on his very first GB trip...as we dive deep in to Ben's journey with Great Britain Ice Hockey leading up to the 2019 World Championships in Slovakia before we take a break for part 2!!

In this episode we discuss why goaltending coaches should share knowledge rather than hiding it, Euan discusses his experience at the OGQ's with Team GB (he also puts Ben on the spot and confuses him at the same time during this), we talk about Euan & Dan getting trapped in the changing room while the coach is speaking, we also discuss the hot topic of artificial ice along with its benefits and pitfalls that it brings and why we should be cautious with it at times and finally we finish with some fun (not so quick fire) questions that everyone loves!

We know you expect us to be biased but honestly this is one hell of an interview! There's something in it for everyone, especially if you're a goalie or player coming through the ranks in the juniors or hoping to make the jump to the senior leagues.
