ALERT: State forces reportedly tailed the vehicle of the family of slain revolutionary Rewilmar Torrato.

The family successfully retrieved Torrato's remains four days after her death in an alleged encounter with government troops on August 15.

The family reported that two vehicles—a Toyota Hilux Conquest and a motorcycle—followed them while they were processing the death certificate and on their way home.

They were also surrounded by intelligence officers at the funeral parlor, who even attempted to take pictures of the family.

🔴 **UPDATE:** Staff Sergeant Ramon Legayada and PNP officers reportedly barred the staff of a funeral parlor in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo from transferring the remains of Rewilmar Torrato.

According to the family, the PNP demanded that they sign the PNP Logbook before fully releasing the remains from Caspe Funeral Homes, where the body was first sent to be embalmed.

The family clarified that before they began processing Torrato's death certificate, the PNP, LGU, and the staff of Caspe Funeral Homes assured them that everything was cleared and that any additional documents were unnecessary.

TORRATO FAMILY CALLS FOR THE RELEASE OF REMAINS OF RED FIGHTER REWILMAR "VIVIAN" TORRATO AND OTHERS IN ALLEGED ENCOUNTER WITH PHILIPPINE ARMY

August 18, Iloilo – In a statement released to the media, the Torrato family has called for the release of the remains of red fighter Rewilmar "Vivian" Torrato and all those who died with her in an alleged encounter with the Philippine Army in Lambunao town, Iloilo province.

The Philippine Army had announced earlier that Torrato, along with 74 year-old NDFP Peace Consultant Maria Concepcion “Concha” Araneta-Bocala, was killed in an alleged ten-minute firefight with troops from the 82nd Infantry (Bantay-Laya) Battalion on August 15, 2024.

"We are saddened upon hearing the news of the alleged demise of our family Rewilmar "Vivian" Torrato. She was a kind, caring, intelligent, and compassionate woman and we respect her decision to offer her life to serve the people in her utmost capacity,” said the Torrato family.

They added, “If the news of the Philippine Army on her alleged death holds true, we hope that they will also give our family respect and release the remains of our family member so we may confirm her death, grieve her properly, give her due respect and proper burial rights.”

“Thus, we, the family of Rewilmar "Vivian" Torrato is sincerely urging the Philippine Army and the AFP to honor its claim that it is a professional organisation that respects the International Humanitarian Law, Geneva Code of Conduct on the Rules of War. We implore them, even on humanitarian grounds alone, to release the remains of "Vivian Torrato" and of all those who died with her. It is a basic act expected, even in war, of any human being,” the family concluded.

Along with the yet unreleased remains announced by the Philippine Army, Vicente “Hadjie” Hinojales was allegedly discovered by the state forces near the encounter site and is now in an advanced stage of decomposition.

The remains of Torrato, Araneta-Bocala, and Hinojales were supposed to be airlifted on August 17. However, in a text message sent by the Philippine Army to a local radio station on the same day, they stated that they did not have a schedule for when the remains would be airlifted due to the unavailability of a helicopter that day.//

NOW: Drivers, Operators, and Commuters Celebrate Historic Victory Over PUVMP with Caravan

ILOILO CITY, July 29 - Led by the No To PUV Phaseout Coalition Western Visayas (NTPPC-WV), over a hundred traditional jeepneys and private vehicles joined today's transport caravan in Iloilo City to celebrate a 'historic victory' over the government's Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).

The group welcomed the call of several Senators to recommend the temporary suspension of the PUVMP during the Senate Committee on Public Services hearing last July 23. During the hearing, transport leaders and other stakeholders voiced their grievances and concerns about the program's implementation.

KABAKOD representative Lilian Sembrano criticized the PUVMP for favoring the interests of local government units (LGUs), government agencies, and pro-modernization groups while ignoring the concerns of drivers, operators, and passengers. NTPPC-WV lead convenor Elmer Forro expressed concerns that the program could lead to the loss of cooperatives, highlighting issues with the government's push for loans for imported mini buses and the enforcement of Local Public Transport Route Plans (LPTRPs). Small operators also pointed out that they are losing their properties, income, and are facing lawsuits due to consolidation requirements. Additionally, Noli Rosales from UNDOC PISTON provided examples of the Cooperative Development Authority's (CDA) inadequacies in resolving coop issues, particularly concerning monopolization and control by questionable leaders.

These issues faced by drivers, operators, and commuters nationwide prompted the Senate Committee on Public Services to recognize the need to immediately pass a resolution to suspend the PUVMP.

"A great salute to all the drivers, operators, and citizens who stood together, took action, and took a stand against the PUVMP!" said NTPPC-WV.

"This is proof that our unity and collective action are the only things that can bring light to the darkness of our ordeal. We, the people, are the ones carving our history, writing our future," the group added.

The NTPPC-WV vowed to continue the fight until the "anti-driver, anti-operator, anti-commuter, and anti-people PUVMP" is fully scrapped./PT
