ANATOMICAL POSITION
In a simple, precise way, anatomical position is a universal or standardized method of observing or imaging the body that allows precise and consistent anatomical references.
In anatomical position, the fellow assumes an upright standing with eyes facing forward, feet remain flat on the floor, head erect, arms by the sides of the body and palms facing forward whilst the thumb points away from the body.
It is being in this position where all the anatomical planes can clearly be imagined and recruited.
These planes are Frontal, Transverse, and Sagittal planes.
The frontal plane divides the body into ventral(anterior) and caudal (posterior) parts whilst Sagittal plane divides the body into left and right halves and transverse plane divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower)halves.
Transverse plane can also be referred to as axial plane and the frontal plane is also same as the coronary plane.
