"If there’s four, why not more? That seems the simple inspiration behind the many extra-cylinder conversions built in the U.S. since the 1930s, when spare motors from companies like Indian weren’t exactly plentiful, but were certainly cheap. Bud Cox had a couple of late 1938 Indian 4-cylinder motors, type 438, the last of the “sporting fours,” which had returned to an IoE valve layout after two years of being upside down. Of course, if you’re going to merge two 4-cylinder motors, it’s important they match, and Indian made significant changes to its engine over the years—it’s safe to presume Cox merged ’38 and ’39 engines. One crankcase was cut at the 3.5-cylinder length, the other at the 2.5-cylinder point, and he built a bar stock jig to keep the camshaft and crankshaft journals in line while welding the cases together. After his welds had cooled, Bud “spot heated” these extra-long crankcases to bring them into perfect alignment, then ground all mating surfaces 0.010-inch for a tight fit. For the crankshaft, a solid 140-pound bar of 4130 steel was machined down to create the 30-pound counterweighted crank. The camshaft was machined using Plymouth straight-6 indexing, while Indian contour cam lobes were used. A custom twin-carb intake manifold was cast up to suit. The post-1940 Indian plunger frame was stretched by 7.25-inches, and Harley-Davidson Electra Glide telescopic forks were used, which surely confused a few folks. The best thing about the Bud Cox Super Six is that it works. The Super Six displaces approximately 120 CI and produces approximately 85 HP; she cruises easily and smoothly at 90 MPH. This is a unique motorcycle built by a man who had a clue. It is one of only two built, with Bud’s neighbor Herb Ottaway building the other example at the same time. The Ottaway bike is currently displayed in the Twisted Oz Motorcycle Museum in Augusta, Kansas."
