Death Cart: El Rito, New Mexico, 1890-1910 Inés Herrera American, active late 1800s-early 1900s
Introduced by Spanish settlers to the southwestern United States (then part of Mexico) in the 1500s, dramatic sculptures of skeletal figures were used during Easter processions in what is now northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Active around the 1880s and 1900s, in El Rito, New Mexico, the creator of this work, José Inés Herrera, was known as the Santero de la Muerte (Saint-maker of Death) because he specialized in carving death statues.
