Reflecting on last weekend's Death Cafe, here’s a poignant death poem by Tembo, a Buddhist monk from the Edo period in Japan. We hope these death poems, crafted by poets of the past, have enlightened you by gently reminding us of life's impermanence and beauty.

For last Saturday's 10th edition of Death Cafe, we invited certified forest therapy guide .forestdays to lead a forest therapy experience aimed at resting our minds and reigniting our souls. 🤍 We truly appreciated everyone’s participation and presence that day and look forward to seeing you at our upcoming editions. Stick around with us!

𝗣𝗼𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲:
I wish this body
might be dew in a field
of flowers

— Japanese Haiku Poet Tembo (died in 1823)

The desire to become dew highlights the transient nature of life, a common theme in Buddhist themes and Japanese poetry. The tone of Tembo's haiku is serene and accepting. There is no fear or resistance to the idea of death; instead, there is a peaceful acceptance and even a longing for the transformation that death brings. This reflects a spiritual readiness and a harmonious view of life's end.

Here's one from the famous Mark Twain. While Mark Twain is best known for his novels and humorous writings, this poem stands out as an example of his versatility as a writer. It reflects a more introspective and somber side of his literary talent.

Dew (tsuyu), covering the grass and trees of autumn, evaporates as the sun rises. Dew is one of the images signifying transience in Japanese poetry, and Buddhist literature often refers to the world as "a world of dew."

Empty-handed I entered the world

Two simple happenings

— Zen monk Kozan Ichikyo (1283–1360)

A few days before his death, Kozan called his pupils together, ordered them to bury him without ceremony, and forbade them to hold services in his memory. He wrote this poem on the morning of his death, laid down his brush, and died sitting upright.

Child of the way,
I leave at last—
a willow on the other shore.

— Japanese Haiku Poet Benseki (died in 1728)

Nori no chigo, "child of the way," expresses not only the dream of an eighty-year-old man to renew his youth, but contains a play on words as well. In his final years Benseki abandoned the world and became a monk, changing his name to Honi. The name "Honi" can mean both "child of the way" and "child of the doctrine."

The willow (yanagi) is a tall, slender tree found throughout Japan, often seen on river and lake banks. In haiku, it's a symbol of spring with its green branches drifting in the wind. In Buddhist literature, crossing a river symbolizes the transition from ignorance to enlightenment.
