New episode today! For the first time in Foxfire Farmhouse Podcast history, we have a guest on the show. Meet Brian Du, a Tulsa-based filmmaker who writes and directs absurdist comedy short films for Foxfire Films. Listen to Josh and Brian tell about how they met and the projects they worked on together. Then hear about Brian's most recent projects - one of which landed him at the West Sound Film Festival here in Bremerton, Washington.

Welcome to the Aftershow! A fresh new episode one week early! Here's the thing. We usually sit around and talk movies and culture long after the recorder has been shut down. This time, we decided to let the recorder roll and provide bonus content for the podcast.

This time, our conversation explored Lewis and Tolkien's thoughts about Walt Disney and his classic animated feature "Snow White." You probably won't be surprised to know that Lewis and Tolkien didn't like it. However, you might be surprised at what G.K. Chesterton had to say about it.

"But wait!" you shout at your phone's screen. "Chesterton wasn't even alive when Snow White was released!" You are correct! Let me first assure you that we have no evil necromancy happening today. Rather, we consult his immortal words in his short essay called, "A Defense of Penny Dreadfuls" to imagine what he might have had to say to Lewis and Tolkien as they walked out of the theater.

If you've ever tried to create something--an innovative technology, a small business, a movie script, a sermon (you get the idea)--you know it can take an enormous amount of energy and attention and still not be any good. So how did literary giants like C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien manage to produce so much and so great literature through their lifetime. Aside from their natural gifts and particular upbringings, they also had something else: each other.

Thanks to the work of Diana Pavlac Gyler, the collaboration of the the literary group known as the "Inklings" has been laid out for us to examine. In this episode, Josh and Elijah explore her takeaways from years of studying this group and consider how we can apply this to our own creative endeavors today.

The book is called "Bandersnatch: C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and the Creative Collaboration of the Inklings" by Diana Pavlac Gyler.

Here are the "Cool Things" Josh and Elijah recommended in today's show.

Machine Gun Preacher
Watership Down

Few arts evoke emotion as potently as music. It can move your or water your eyes. It's a powerful magic that can serve both evil and good. How do we know which music reverberates truth and which turns our hearts toward evil? That's some of what we attempt to understand in today's episode of Foxfire Farmhouse.

Don't let the title fool you. The movie, "Calvary", is not a Sunday school adaptation of the crucifixion of our Lord. This movie is a gory depiction of someone else's crucifixion. Elijah and I follow Father James through his own passion week and attempt to unravel the threads of hope this movie offers to all those who find themselves on a cross.

With the war in Ukraine popping up everywhere from social media to church prayer meetings, I wanted to recommend a movie that would help people think through the nature of war. In one sense, all movies about war can be a catalyst to deeper reflection, but not all movies about war encourage that reflection. Some films might even discourage it.

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" stares war in the face and does not offer simple solutions to conflict. Instead, it shows us that war is in our hearts before it is ever on our doorstep. It shows us how only our commitment to love and mercy can create peace. Like James says, "What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel." (James 4:1-2)

If you want to watch a well-crafted movie that struggles with the nature of war, watch "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes."

Love stories. Most of the movies we enjoy include a romantic angle, even when the movie doesn't fall into the romance genre. Why? Why do love stories catch our attention? Why do they creep into high action movies or thrillers or even create an entire genre? Today, Josh and Elijah attempt to sort this out and figure out what makes a good romance movie.
