15 lessons from How Big Things Get Done: The Surprising Factors That Determine the Fate of Every Project, from Home Renovations to Space Exploration and Everything In Between by Bent Flyvbjerg and Dan Gardner:

1. Big is best built from small. It's important to start with a clear and realistic vision for your project, and then break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks.

2. Be a team maker. No one can successfully complete a big project alone. Surround yourself with a team of talented and dedicated people who share your vision.

3. Master the unknown unknowns. Even the most well-planned projects will encounter unexpected challenges. Be prepared to adapt and adjust as needed.

4. Know that your biggest risk is you. The biggest threat to the success of your project is not the unexpected, but your own biases and blind spots. Be humble and open to feedback.

5. Be transparent and honest. Communicate openly with stakeholders about the progress of your project, even when things aren't going according to plan.

6. Don't be afraid to fail. Failure is a natural part of any learning process. If something doesn't work out, don't be afraid to try something different.

7. Celebrate success. It's important to recognize and celebrate the successes of your team, both big and small.

8. Don't try to do everything yourself. It's important to delegate tasks to your team members and trust them to get the job done.

9. Set realistic expectations. It's important to be realistic about the cost, time, and resources required to complete your project.

10. Be flexible and adaptable. Things don't always go according to plan. Be prepared to adapt and adjust your approach as needed.

11. Communicate effectively. Communication is key to the success of any project. Be clear, concise, and consistent in your communication with stakeholders.

12. Manage risks effectively. Identify and assess the risks associated with your project, and develop strategies to mitigate them.

13. Empower your team. Give your team members the authority and resources they need to be successful.

14. Be data-driven. Use data to inform your decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.

15. Learn from your mistakes. Every project is an opportunity to learn and grow. Take the time to reflect on your successes and failures, and identify areas for improvement.

Following these lessons can help you to successfully complete big projects on time and on budget.

Scientists have observed a phenomenon resembling ‘self-healing metal,’ reminiscent of the T-1000 android from the movie Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

During the experiments conducted at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico, scientists employed a method of pulling on small metal pieces approximately 200 times per second.

Initially, a crack developed and expanded, but after around 40 minutes, the metal eventually reconnected and fused back together. Researchers found that cracks in metal can mend themselves under certain conditions, a process called ‘cold welding.’

While currently limited to tiny metal pieces at the nanoscale, this discovery has potential applications in engineering. The self-healing process could lead to the development of materials designed to prevent fatigue failure in machines, enhancing their durability and longevity.

"The World Beyond Your Head: On Becoming an Individual in an Age of Distraction" is a book written by Matthew B. Crawford that explores the impact of modern technology and distractions on our ability to cultivate a sense of self and individuality. Here are ten lessons from the book:

1. Cultivate focused attention: Develop the ability to sustain focused attention on tasks or experiences without being constantly distracted. Deep engagement with the world around you promotes a sense of agency and individuality.

2. Embrace manual competence: Engaging in hands-on, practical activities can be deeply satisfying and help you connect with the physical world. Developing manual skills fosters a sense of competence and autonomy.

3. Be mindful of the information you consume: Be selective about the information you expose yourself to. Avoid mindless consumption of media and actively curate the inputs that shape your worldview.

4. Embrace solitude and reflection: Allow yourself regular moments of solitude to reflect and introspect. Disconnecting from constant external stimuli enables you to develop a deeper understanding of yourself and your values.

5. Practice discernment: Develop the ability to critically evaluate and discern between different sources of information, ideas, and influences. Cultivate your own intellectual autonomy and resist being overly swayed by external forces.

6. Engage with real-world experiences: Seek out authentic experiences and direct encounters with the physical world. Engaging your senses and actively participating in the world enhances your sense of individuality and agency.

7. Prioritize meaningful engagement over passive consumption: Actively engage with the world and seek out experiences that allow you to participate and contribute. Passive consumption of media and entertainment can hinder the development of individuality.

8. Embrace craftsmanship and craftsmanship-like activities: Engaging in activities that require skill, craftsmanship, and attention to detail can be deeply rewarding. Pursue activities that allow you to create, build, or repair, as they promote a sense of accomplishment and individuality.

9. Create boundaries with technology: Establish boundaries and limits for your use of technology to prevent it from dominating your attention and eroding your sense of self. Be intentional about when and how you engage with digital devices.

10. Foster meaningful connections with others: Cultivate genuine connections and relationships with others that go beyond superficial interactions. Meaningful social connections contribute to a sense of belonging and help shape your individual identity.

By incorporating these lessons from "The World Beyond Your Head," you can navigate the challenges of the modern world and cultivate a stronger sense of self and individuality. The book prompts reflection on the impact of distractions and encourages a more intentional and mindful approach to living in a hyperconnected world.

Ia mampu memuatkan 200 orang.

NEWS | A group of scientists has developed a method for indirectly “seeing” objects using quantum physics.

The new technology might help quantum computers and other devices improve their measurements by bringing together the quantum and classical worlds.

We “see” objects through the complicated interplay of light photons within specialised cells in our eyes’ retina.

However, experts believe that a comparable phenomena might be duplicated without the need of photo absorption or light.

This will allow us to study things indirectly without “contaminating” them with light photons or influencing a system while attempting to study it.

Imagine using light to study a strip of a photosensitive film without “damaging” it. The researchers used transmon devices, relatively large superconducting circuits that exhibit quantum behavior, to track microwave pulses produced by conventional instrumentation.
