SWITCH-ON TOMORROW NIGHT

This time tomorrow, Friday 1 September, Blackpool Illuminations will be switched ON in a new format, free-to-access event on the Promenade. Here’s what’s happening:

⭐ Nickelodeon Parade – featuring around 100 dancers, musicians and street performers and floats with larger-than-life characters from SpongeBob SquarePants, PAW Patrol, and more.

⭐ Singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor will perform some of her favourite tracks before pulling the all-important switch.

⭐ Brace yourself for a specially curated Nickelodeon sound and light show on The Blackpool Tower.

⭐ A fireworks finale will take place over the beach.

The excitement builds up from 7pm. Make sure to plan your journey ahead of time.

TRAIN STRIKES - FRIDAY 1 SEPTEMBER ‼️

Due to planned industrial action, there will be no rail services to Blackpool on Friday 1 September. A small number of routes will have a very limited train service on Saturday 2 September.

The Blackpool Illuminations Switch-On, the biggest event in the resort’s calendar, is taking place on Friday. Plan your journey ahead of time to avoid any travel hiccups, check for alternate travel options to Blackpool, and stay ahead of the disruptions.

On this day in 1994, the Big One opened at Blackpool Pleasure Beach!

Standing at 235ft tall, it’s the tallest coaster in the UK and, when it opened 27 years ago, it was the tallest in the world!

We are saddened to hear that Jasper, the therapy dog who switched on the world-famous Blackpool Illuminations with a group of Corona Heroes in 2020, has passed away.

Hospital chaplain David Anderson and his cockapoo Jasper were chosen to switch on the Lights based on their unwavering dedication in supporting sick patients and boosting morale for the staff on wards at East Lancashire’s NHS Hospitals during the pandemic.

Jasper brought happiness, peace and comfort to so many people and, just like Blackpool Illuminations, he brightened up the darkest days. Sending all our love to David at this heart-breaking time ❤️

We are shocked and deeply saddened to hear that TV presenter and comedian, Paul O'Grady, has passed away.

The much-loved comedian was no stranger to Blackpool. He visited several times over the years, mainly as his drag persona Lily Savage, and recently visited the resort in October 2022.

A national treasure with a larger-than-life character and a kind, compassionate soul.

Farewell, Lily ❤️
