Let’s talk about limiting beliefs that hold us back from success.

So often when we talk to other couples about how we quit our jobs in the insurance and financial services industry and started working for ourselves we hear things like “I wish I could do that but…” I have too much debt, or I don’t have enough savings or I don’t have a business idea, or I don’t know where to start or, I could never be my own boss or ….insert limited belief.

Ultimately the first thing you need to do to start the process of becoming financially independent and working for yourself is stop telling yourself you can’t do it.

BECAUSE YOU CAN. But you won’t if you don’t start to believe it. It doesn’t matter how many people believe in you or think you’re amazing if you don’t think that. The messaging we send ourselves is SO vital to the success of our endeavors.

And you don’t have to think it 100% of the time. Lord knows we have doubt and fear creep in probably daily. You just have to take that first leap of faith by allowing yourself to believe in the beauty of your dreams. Because great things happen when you do that.

This picture was taken of us when we were making $4000/ month, traveling through Europe with 2 backpacks and a dream. If we can support ourselves while traveling the world full time, you can believe in your own dream.

We also know it’s hard to believe when you’re alone or don’t have anyone else to tell you that you’re not insane. So if you need that, please please message us and tell us your big dream that you don’t think is possible but really really wish you could achieve!!. I promise we will respond. ❤️

Do you remember when we started this room?!

Matt and I put this together with plans to rent it for $1000/ month on furnished finder we just listed it yesterday! If this works then between the $1000 we get here and $1500 on our ADU our house will be paying for itself!

What we’ve learned is part of getting out of the rat race is taking what you have and putting it to work for you- whether it’s skills, space, tools etc! Look around… what do you have/ can you do to financially support yourself?

The house that started it all. We spent over a year and a half, went through 4 different realtors, viewed over 100 homes, put in more than 40 offers and went into escrow 4 times before finding this little house. It was $260k, my dad gifted us a portion of the 3.5% down payment funds and after years of yardless apartment living with our 80lb collie we moved into this 1050 sq ft mid century MANSION (or at least that’s how it felt!) home in the “up and coming” neighborhood of Lents.

We made a lot of mistakes in our house search, a lot of mistakes in our journey to and through the ownership of our first home but we did 2 big things right. We chose a location that was rapidly appreciating and we negotiated major systems replacements up front. The result was that in 2018 2 years later, when we sold our home we made $58k- which was almost our combined take home pay at the time ($60k). This was the moment I realized what an ASSET was. There was no way, with what we were making at this time that we could have ever saved $60k. But in 2 years and making barely above minimum wage we were able to cash a check for nearly a years pay and that check changed our lives. . . Now if I knew some of the things I know now about how to leverage equity we’d still have that house and could have done all the same things we did with that $60k and then some- but that’s a financial literacy lesson for another time.

But when I say- Matt and I were broke- hated our jobs- needed to get out of the rat race desperately and didn’t know how I MEAN it. And when I say we risked EVERYTHING to chase our dreams I Mean it, and when I say 1 property can change your whole life I REALLY mean it. We took that $58k and Re skilled, started a business, quit our jobs, sold everything that couldn’t fit in a backpack and started living a life that many people only dream about.

So if you can relate to being broke- miserable- exhausted and wishing you could G**O of the life you’re living and go after what you want. Follow us. Because we did it 6 years ago and we’re here to tell you it’s possible.

This will forever be one of my favorite pictures.

Matt and I have been talking a lot about what 2024 is going to look like for us and where we want to be in 2030 and what we’ve realized is we want to go back to basics and invest more in others by providing tools, information and experience we’ve gleaned through our entrepreneurial journey since 2018. For those of you who aren’t as familiar to the genesis of how we got into real estate investing and short term rentals it all started when we sold our first house and turned it into new skills, careers, businesses and a trip around the world. That first house was the catalyst to the rest of our life and now We’re obsessed with creating freedom for ourselves and others. We escaped the rat race in 2018 and we’ve been the exhausted overworked underpaid employees who just want to be able to travel-spend time with our families- pursue our interests and to have enough money to do all of those things. We don’t have everything figured out but we do know- living a life chained to a routine that is slowly killing your dreams is NOT a life. So if you want to come along for the ride, learn from us and with us, and achieve your own financial independence and freedom definitely stay tuned.

It is with great sadness that I share this news. My brother in Law Garrett passed away suddenly Tuesday leaving my youngest sister widowed at 26 with an 8 month old and 3 year old. Garrett always had a smile, a kind word and a big hug to give to anyone in need. He was the type of friend that would help you move, or paint your house when all other friends were “busy.” Because my niece was medically fragile my sister was a stay at home mom, and Garrett was the primary income source for their family. My other sister set up a go fund me for Dottie and her kids. To give them some buffer as they face this next chapter without Garrett. I’ve put the link in my bio and in my stories. Please give if you feel led, we also understand that’s not possible for everyone and appreciate your support in all forms. We just ask that you give Dotti and the kids space so they can process this loss. Link also in my Insta Bio. https://gofund.me/4f8ff5fa

Soaking up the last few days of calm before the storm. Getting ready to list our house and spend a lot of time driving around the block while showings are booked, fielding calls from buyers agents and hopefully getting several offers on our little craftsman cottage in but today I worked on websites, podcasts, and cleaning. We’re working hard towards a life we are excited about. Towards a life we WANT and that’s hard work. As my friend Brandi has been telling me from - it’s important to take time to rest, recharge, and reboot. So I am doing that in the next couple of days.

8 years married and 10 years together. Valentine’s Day isn’t enough to celebrate how special you are to me and how lucky I am to have you as a partner. Not a lot of men could keep up with me, let alone want to, but you don’t only keep up, you keep me on my toes. Always encouraging me, always pushing me to be better than I was the day before. Today and every day I am lucky you chose me. Happy Valentine’s Day my love. I am looking forward to Netflix and chill with you when I get home. 💘

Just a pile of Corgis. We moved back to Portland Oregon in October and it was the best choice we’ve made since our decision to quit adulting to travel around the world. We missed this quirky artsy city and our neighborhood . We have also welcomed another fur baby to the pack, her name is Pippin, she’s Gimli Arwens daughter. Matthew has a job working as a for an international company. He gets to work from home and loves it and I am a and have really been enjoying helping people find their place in the Pacific Northwest specializing in character homes. Safe to say- we’re doing alright!

Spent a lovely week with Le super talented
We had a blast seeing the fall colors and enjoyed a yummy high tea for my 29th birthday! I love spending time with my big cousin and learning from her amazing artistic photographer self. She snapped this cute photo.
In other news WE ARE GETTING A PUPPY!!! I am Soooooo excited. If all goes smoothly, we will be getting our puppy 1 week after we move into our new home. Covid has stopped us from our international adventures for the time being but our adventure in life continues as we renovate our new home and raise our new puppy together! Keep an eye out for YouTube videos and updated blogs coming your way in the next few months!

Here’s a photo of our 300k patch of Dirt. Well 297k right now. One of the interesting processes in building a house is the ability to pick and choose what you want to put into it. When we signed our with we were walked through the different structural items we could opt in for. Things like square corners Vs rounded corners. Walls on her stairs or railings, air conditioning, fenced front porch or open. Each item you upgrade costs money. The base price of our 3 bed 3 bath home was 289,900. So far we’ve added a fenced in porch and Air conditioning but nothing else. Those two items increased our price to 297k. (Of which about $4500 we’re upgrades and the rest was a lot fee). Now you can buy a build like this without a realtor. Oakwood is really good at walking you through the process but we are big believers in working with professionals who are the best at what they do. So we were SUPER glad to find our realtor . Graham came with us to the appointment and walked us through everything. Advised us on what we should and should not opt to upgrade on, and asked about things we would never have known to as the Oakwood sales agent.. things like, do you charge overdig fees? What are their “outs.” I am so glad we’re navigating this process with an experienced captain at the helm. We’d love to hear what you’re interested in learning about this process. If you’re thinking about building a home with a developer and specifically if you’re thinking of building a home with we’re glad to share our ever growing knowledge!

For the first time in a long time we went exploring. Covid19 has limited our travel both locally and abroad and we’ve set up shop in Colorado for the time being. Matt’s Best friend has been in town this week and we’ve been showing him around on a limited basis (mostly outdoor places which can be reached by car) which meant we had to see what was around too!. It’s strange to explore in the middle of a pandemic and it looks so different from what we’re used to. We wore masks all day (except for photos and eating) we kept our distance from others and stuck to our small group of Matt, my sister and brother in law (who live with us) and Chase, Matt’s best friend. But I have to say for the first time in a long time I felt in my element. I felt the joy of travel. I’ve absolutely cherished this time of quiet that Covid19 has forced us into. I’ve done a lot of self reflection and work, I’ve been able to slow down when normally my speed is fast and faster. But today I explored the grounds of a castle tucked behind the shade of pine trees and . I laughed with friends as I took photos that will cement these memories forever and I explored a NEW place. My travelers heart is full today. Today was a great day. What’s something you’ve done recently that made your heart feel full?

Someone wise once said, life is the thing that happens when you are making other plans. It's been a wild ride these last 12 months. This time last year we were starting our business and getting ready to backpack around the world. Today we find ourselves perusing old photos from the comfort of my parents house in wondering when the world will go back to normal. I know a lot of you guys have wondered what we've been up to, how we are doing etc. We returned to the US after spending and epic holiday season in Ireland with good friends. We got home about two weeks before they closed travel to and from Europe. We then spent most of February working on our RV and spending time with Matthews family in Northern CA. We scheduled a 3 week trip to Colorado Springs to visit my parents who live in where my grandparents and sisters also live. And while here shelter in place for Covid19 hit. So we got stuck. To top that off our RV broke down 2 days before we left for CO. And we got word that it was irreparable. So we donated it. And while that all sounds bad and seems like the universe was kicking us while we were down we are actually doing great! After being away for nearly a year it's been so good to spend time with family. It's also the longest we've spent in Colorado and we are finding we actually love it here. So we decided we re going to stay for awhile. I have a job managing a local accounting firm office, with flexible hours and vacation policy for loads of future travel. And Matt's literally interviewing every day. We believe some of this week's interviews will turn into 3 or so job offers next week for local defense companies. Don't worry... We're still going to travel ALOT. It's just going to look different. We will still be giving loads of travel tips, sharing adventure pics and stories and creating the content you've come to follow us for. We can't say enough how stoked we are to have gone on this journey, how excited we are for the next chapter and how much we appreciate your support through it all. Can't wait to show you what's next! Live an extraordinary life 😘
