I have booted up the old blog - let me know what you think... and if you want me to start a series on Cinder & Hops that is more just me talking through something, and less a conversation (as getting those scheduled has proven harder than anticipated...)

Why do we have creeds? What is the purpose of a confession of faith? Are they all just extra-biblical claptrap? Could they possibly even be anti-faith? Well, lets talk about all that!

03/08/2020

Today we are looking back to an old conversation we had with Elizabeth DeVault about "Christian Imagination!" Enjoy the threeway chat here with Elizabeth, Allyson, and myself!

Apologies for the delay recently, we have struggled recently to get the conversations scheduled. Additionally we had to deal with a guest fighting doxing. The world is crazy out there, but enjoy this video of the chat!

PS: enjoy this video format! Something new for you!

New episode out! We tackle Christian imagination! Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Conversations are POWERFUL

13/07/2020

Tonight we have a fun conversation with Ian (from the FIRST After Hours episode). We have one of those conversations we all have when sitting with a friend late at night, just shooting the breeze. Hobbies, good drinks, to***co, and then some really fun chats about things going on now. Read below for the podcasts that we give shout outs to!

Podcasts we shout out:
Erskine Conversations (Hosted by me, Edited by him!)
CakeWalk Podcast (Edited by him!)

Today’s episode is up! “Dark Coffee, Dark Beer, & Deep Thoughts” with Ian Harris! Watch tonight at 5pm if you’d like!

Today’s episode! VERY interesting talk about Christian Anarchy!

Sorry for the delay, it’s been a busy one! I wont be posting a video today as the conversation ran into the night, and there was a lot of audio editing that had to be done! So enjoy the audio, and please share and give us a 5***** review!

Tonight we are chatting with my cousin, Kevin about what faith is! This topic is definitely not something easy to nail down, and everyone has their own opinion. So listen in, and enjoy, as we talk about what faith is... what it isn't... and whatever else comes up naturally! I thoroughly enjoyed this chat, and hope you will too!

Be sure to follow us on social media (FB, IG) and give us a 5 star (*****) review! As always, if you have any epiphanies, comments, disagreements, or thoughts hit us up on social media or email me at [email protected]!

PS: There is a 3rd box because we had to get Kevin's audio through his phone, while his video came from his computer! Apologies if it looks weird!!

Hey everyone, poll question: Do you listen to the podcast, or watch the video more?

17/06/2020

Apologies that this didn't go out Monday! It has been a busy week, but I want to make sure that Dr. David W. Pendergrass gets to show his face and we get to show this conversation!

No "After Hours" episode today. But I do encourage you to go listen to Just Thinking Podcast's episode on the whole George Floyd situation. It is theologically, and socially challenging.

What do we think? Downsides I see:
1) what happens if/when things begin to cost more across the board? That money must come from somewhere (even if stripped from police funding)
2) what about black Americans that make above $X.XX amount per year? Do those with 6-8 figures get the same offer? Where does the intersectionality win out or lose? Especially over and against economic considerations?
3) same question concerning political affiliation? Will there be a push to limit conservatives because “they don’t like socialism anyways!” Where does the intersectionality win out or lose?
4) I think we have learned from woke apologists that “apologizing” doesn’t actually grant forgiveness. So does doing this actually fix anything, or is it just an empty gesture that will only demand more.

Thoughts? Discussion?

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear announced Monday that the state would begin working towards getting "100% of our individuals in our black and African-American communities" health insurance in an effort to correct racial inequalities in health coverage.

Today will be a day to think. To pray. To listen. And to work together on how to effect change. What policies, what mindsets, what can we do in this earthly plane - besides living the Gospel - to help our brothers and sisters in need?

01/06/2020

Tonight we chat with the legendary Dawain Atkinson: Creator of THE BAR PODCAST NETWORK. It has been a pleasure to get to know Dawain over these last years, and this conversation was a great opportunity to hear where he came from theologically. This chat is also, providentially, a great corrolary to "American Gospel: Christ Alone" that is out on Netflix. Enjoy the conversation, be sure to subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts, and keep your eyes open for the next AfterHours this Friday

Today we chat with creator of The BAR Podcast Network, Dawain Atkinson. Dawain and chat about how he moved from his roots in the New Apostolic Reformation tradition to the more biblically-historical Reformed tradition. It is a lively conversation, and one that may really challenge the thoughts of some of you! And that's ok! It gives you a great opportunity to reach out to us here, or Dawain at The BAR and follow up! We have this conversation recorded in a video as well - available on Facebook and YouTube! 28/05/2020

As an only child, I grew up with a number of friends who I can call "brothers." One of them I have known my whole life. We are only a year apart, but I looked up to him something hard. He is a first generation African American from Kenya.

I had the opportunity to ask him to be in my wedding after meeting my lovely wife 8 years ago, and then had the immense honor to be in his wedding. I couldn’t ask for a better “big brother” than Him.

I have steered away from these controversies because of my background, my love for my brother, and his family. I never saw them as different and never thought anything of him except that he was my brother, my friend, and so much more. I knew that there were broken people all around that would see something else, but that didn’t change who he is to me.

When I watch this video, this is how I see my brother. A brilliant man who is leagues smarter than me. A humble son and husband, who knows how to tear it up when he has fun. An immeasurably loving brother who was terrified to call my mom (Mrs. Kathryn) after colliding with each other playing ultimate frisbee. He was worried of the hurt it would cause her to know her two sons got hurt (in different ways). One of us broke their nose (Me) and the other hurt a friend accidentally, causing his first broken anything. He’s an engineer. A staunch supporter and uncle to my kids, and so much more. The fact that people in the world would boil who he is down to his skin color is incredibly ridiculous, but not surprising in a fallen world.

I share this here because it is a conversation worth having, and I am genuinely interested in hearing your stories. I don’t believe we will ever rid the world of racism through legislation. We won’t be rid of it on this side of eternity... but we can expose it. Talk about it. Look for it to rear up and then burn it out with the light of the Gospel and the light of day. The Bible tells us of a people who are neither Greek no Jew - there is no ethnic distinction. That people is the Church. Today though, we must be careful to not label racism on everything, so as to devalue true racism when it appears. But we absolutely cannot be blind to it either.

Let us no longer be blind, let's share and listen to each other.

This is Cinder & Hops though, so what do you think? Understand rude comments WILL. BE. REMOVED.

Thank you!

To my Christian brothers and sisters, how does this response strike you? What would you say to one who is struggling?

To my friends who are questioning, agnostic, or don’t believe: do his words have resonance with you? Anything you would add?

Huzzah! We have just crested 100 likes on Facebook, and 100 downloads/listens! What is everyone thinking so far? Some takeaways I’m noticing:
1. Apparently the videos are a big hit. They are reaching numbers of people 3x that are following Cinder & Hops!!
2. You want some more engaging content during the week. I’m thinking I may post short videos of banter/to get banter, or small edits as teasers throughout the week. Thoughts on that?
3. Y’all are liking the idea of the podcast, but maybe there are certain topics or conversations you’d want to see/hear? Let me know below in the comments!

Thank you all again for the support!

What is Cinder & Hops

The world is hitting a point where it is impossible to have conversations in our culture. Disagreeing with someone means they must be a fool, and there is no reason to talk. Internet and social media has forced face to face interaction to the peripheral, and when it does happen, its usually all superficial and echo-chamber-y. We need to get back to discourse! We need to be willing to hear another person’s opinion! We need to wrestle with thoughts, and faith, and all those things together! This podcast seeks to open up conversation in the best method I have ever found; with a beer and a pipe… or cigar! Some of my best conversations – whether theology, small business, hot button topics, or pop culture – happened late at night when the guards are down and we all tend to open up more! Cinder & Hops invites you to sit down with me, David Pendergrass, and my guest of the episode! Grab a beer, grab a smoke, listen in and enjoy the conversation!
