Read this dispassionate account of what Hamas did on October 7 and tell me you’d look the families of those who suffered such hideous last breaths in the eye and tell them the solution is a ‘ceasefire.’ I.e., the terrorists who inflicted this coordinated attack should face no consequences.

What you’re actually saying is not only ineffective but a sick insult to the integrity of the State of Israel and a sick insult to the innocent victims of jihadi terrorism. That doesn’t make you a good guy- even if your nativity leads you to consider your motives oh so pure.

Get off your high horses. Get off the streets of London and go home.

You’re in fact, a disgrace.

I will be writing about my adventures and the challenges I see back home while on the road. I know that what I've had to say about the sorry state of affairs resonated with a lot of people in my circles, especially Londoners.

Getting the government out of office is easy, but changing course is an entirely different matter. I hope during my time away from it all, I can give life to the kind of reckoning we need to have to avoid simply changing the guard and carrying on along the path of malaise and decline that compelled me to leave in the first place.

I left on a one-way ticket to Medellin but now I have a better idea of where I’ll be over the next few months.

I'm very bad at birthdays but one engraved into my brain is 16 August 1958 - Madonna's.

There aren’t really words that do justice to the impact her artistry and celebrity have had on my life and the way I have interacted with the world. Going back to childhood where I had the VHS for her Drowned World Tour which I played on repeat learning the choreography. She’s been doing this for longer than I’ve been alive and is still creating art that inspires me because there is such energy to it I've always felt moved to embody and discover my own. Sadly I discovered no artistic talent so I had to instead just live out the elevating fantasy in banal everyday life.

Indeed, in just over 2 weeks’ time, I am taking a one-way trip to Medellin - the name of the lead single from her last album which tells the story of someone older with fantasies of escaping ‘disappointment and betrayal’ by once again reinventing themselves in reconnection to the forces of naïveté and spontaneity. That sees her fall in love and elope with a younger man blown away by her mystique and otherworldliness. If there isn't a profound message in that during these nightmarish times we've found ourselves in.

The Madame X album tapped into the zeitgeist- giving creative expression of the rising authoritarian moment in history. The reality of which became rather prophetic during the pandemic and I believe, calls on those who love the freedom to escape the confines of what Western life has mutated into - soul-destroying and infantilising over-securitisation and that robs us of our humanity and obscures our summons to spirit accountability - and return to who we are, by answering our innate calling- a calling from our internal counsel- to adventure and embrace the magnitude of the soul’s journey. A call to depth and dignity in life by choosing love, hope and richness over fear, cynicism and poverty of spirit.

A world ends when its metaphor dies. We think we are more progressive now in an era where artists get traction by screeching for affirmation and who tell us they are ‘authentic’ and the such. It’s not elevating, it’s not ‘brave’ and it’s not inspirational to me. Madonna is from an era of stars that showed us who they are and what they stand for with an authority that comes from a truly steadfast irreverent attitude that doesn’t need to explain themselves and their choices. The era of David Bowie, Prince, Pete Burns, Freddie Mercury, Annie Lennox. Artists who don’t identify with reductive labels, and don’t so much demand we accord them acceptance by diktat but rather demonstrate their freedom with an acquired personal authority -regardless of social values and attitudes. Her legacy will be proof that this will not just be the preserve of men to bask in.

At 65, Madonna still has the awe-inspiring drive to create, express and elevate. I cannot wait for her retrospective world tour to start in a few months' time. By always focusing on the new she has perhaps neglected her 'legacy'. I'm often saddened that she is under appreciated and misunderstood even -within the gay community. There is so much freedom, joy, humour, iconography, artistry and bops across her 40-year career that too seldom feature on dance floors and playlists today that contain a summons to be badass in a playful and fun way.
