The Naval Academy has named one of its main classroom buildings after my grandfather Jimmy Carter. Every Midshipman at the Naval Academy will now learn humanities, engineering, and language arts in Carter Hall. I was grateful to accept this honor on behalf of my grandfather last Friday.

I was in Annapolis when my grandfather released the news that he is accepting hospice care, and will be spending his final days at home around friends and family. I am incredibly fortunate that I was able to accept this honor and then travel to Plains to tell him about my trip.

I am the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter. I started a podcast to share my story of how my life in a Presidential family shaped my view of America and all of our issues today.

President Jimmy Carter opened his Presidential Inaugural Address with a charge that "We must adjust to changing times while holding on to Unchanging Principles." Today, the times are changing more rapidly than at any other time in our history. So In my podcast Unchanging Principles, I explore many of the issues that we have struggled with since our nation's inception. I explore democracy, voting rights, war, peace, freedom, human rights, and many other issues confronting our nation today. And of course, I'll tell you about my experience being in a family at the center of it all.

My grandfather, Jimmy Carter, was the President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. Jimmy Carter did not start his political career running for President. He was a Senator in the Georgia Senate, and then he was Governor of Georgia before he ran for our nation's highest office.

My grandfather formed his positions, distilled his values, and shaped his vision of our nation through the times he grew up in. Jimmy Carter ascended to the national stage at a time in our country where racial tensions were high and faith in our government was at an all-time low. After the bruising scandals of the Nixon era, my grandfather campaigned on honesty, integrity, competency in government, and faith in the American people.

But the 1970s' were a long time ago, so in my first episode, I would like to re-introduce you to Jimmy Carter so that you get an idea of where I am coming from. And I'll have stories about my life and my family throughout the podcast, starting with Episode 1.
