In last night’s stream, I touched on how Normani’s symbol for her upcoming album, Dopamine, reminds me of the symbol Janet debuted with The Velvet Rope in 1997. Janet, being a cultured, pro-Black queen, inverted the Adinkra symbol for Sankofa (A Twi word that means “go back and get it”) to represent how she was reckoning with past experiences of abuse and depression to move forward. This makes me curious about the themes Normani will explore in her album, which has reportedly been delayed several years because of personal and professional setbacks. This isn’t Normani’s first Janet reference, so I doubt it’s coincidental.

I'm embarrassed by how annoyed I am by the Grammys continuing to ignore Black women's genius. But I'm mad for SZA because her creativity matched her popularity last year. SOS was one of the best reviewed albums of 2023. Kill Bill and Snooze were massive hits. Now, I didn't care for the Snooze video, but y'alll ate it up! Justice for SZA!
