Australia is home to some wonderfully weird creatures.

We've got bunnies with pouches, black swans and mammals that lay eggs.

So it's probably no wonder that some fake animal "facts" have snuck their way into our faunal folklore.

To help clear things up a bit, here are five curly and not-so-curly tales that need setting straight.

It's related to giraffes?! The okapi (pronounced oh-COP-ee) is beautiful and unusual. With its white-and-black striped hindquarters and front legs, it looks like it must be related to zebras! But take a look at an okapi’s head, and you’ll notice a resemblance to giraffes. The okapi is indeed the only living relative of the giraffe. Like a giraffe, the okapi has very large, upright ears, which catch even slight sounds. The okapi also has a long, dark, prehensile tongue, just like a giraffe’s, to help it strip the buds and young leaves from the understory brush of its rainforest home.

If you’re prey, you need to have strategies to avoid, run away from, or withstand any potential attacks from hungry animals – and don’t forget about getting food yourself! A wild American mink in Utah has tested positive for the coronavirus — the first wild animal found to be infected with the virus, researchers say.

The wild mink was infected with a variant of the coronavirus that was “indistinguishable” from viruses taken from nearby farmed minks, researchers with the U.S. Department of Agriculture wrote in a Dec. 13 report. That suggests that the wild mink acquired the infection from farmed animals. It’s not clear if the animal was alive or dead at the time of testing.
