Our  debut is today!

When Back Pocket was just getting started we fantasized about sharing our stories on KQED. Today, we hit the airwaves! Ellison and McArdle will guest host The California Report Magazine and share their favorite stories from their last event about food and memory.

If you’re in the Bay, tune into 88.5 at 4:30 or check out The California Report Magazine’s podcast version on kqed.org or streaming platforms.

A heartfelt thanks to host of TCRM Sasha Khokha for making this possible. She first performed at our event years ago and has shown up to support our work time and time again. Thank you to Victoria Mauleón, the Senior Editor of TCRM for her time and editorial precision. Thanks to for sharing his music. And huge thanks to our co-producer .loves.taymond who edited and produced this episode.

Enjoy the show!

* One of the lead characters in this Oscar-winning doc, is telling a story at our event *

A bit of context:
It’s been years since we’ve tuned into the Academy Awards, but this year was different. There was one film nominated that we had root for: The Last Repair Shop. It’s about one of the last public school instrument repair shops in the country. Believe it or not, The Los Angeles Unified School District gives free instruments to any kid that wants to learn one. And when they break, the instruments are sent to the repair shop where they are fixed for free.

One of the lead characters in the film, Duane Michaels, will be telling a story at our event. He fixes woodwinds. He’s one of those people that’s lived ten lives and when he talks you just want him to keep going. The story he’ll be telling at our show isn’t just interesting, it’ll make you want to be a better person.

TICKETS NOW ON SALE

In A Silent Way: stories about music and tension.

We are excited for a few reasons

1. It’s our biggest show yet.
2. The featured stories are all about the relationship between music and tension (we have some gold.)
3. Our friends San Francisco Chronicle, KQED, KALW, and Hyde FM are all collaborators.

So join us as we bend and release tension, follow the flow of tempo, and ascend to dizzying crescendos. Grab your tickets early, seating limited!

Villa Albertine (French Ministry of Culture), invited Back Pocket to creative direct an event at the Legion of Honor. It was a particularly special event as (the one and only!) Alice Waters and Corentin Poirier were featured as speakers — moderated by the loquacious Tanya Holland.
