"Today, children have much less unsupervised access to the countryside. I worry that they may never know the magic of the wilderness, the power of trees and the thrilling excitement of exploring nature without an adult hovering behind them. And so I write books for children who will never know what the freedom of my childhood was like." -Cressida Cowell, the Author of "How to Train Your Dragon"

We must give children the opportunity to interact with the wilderness, so that they learn to preserve the natural world.

“As an owner of a forest school I hear a lot of parents telling me they have no idea what to do with themselves when they are outdoors.
They do not like bugs, are afraid of germs or don’t like getting dirty.
There seems to be countless reasons that spending a large amount of time out in the wild causes them intense anxiety or leaves them feeling lost and confused.“

“Ive been plotting this podcast for years now. All while countless questions bounced around in my head….
What defines being wild?
Why is it important?
How do we work towards embracing our own wild and helping our children do the same.
Will their lives actually benefit from this connection?
My goal in doing this project is to answer these questions and to help parents first find their own connection to the wild, and then use that to connect their whole family to the wild.
By the end of all of this we will all be wild creatures.“

“For myself, the road to connecting to the wild was not a smooth linear path.
It was a rough painful old dirt road.
One of those seasonal ones that has a million pot holes, you have to stop to clear some branches out of the road, and at least once there will be a deer jumping out and scaring the s**t out of you.“

Hiking with these three is far from the peaceful journey that I had yesterday. Between sibling fights, the trail being hard to follow and fun autism struggles it can be exhausting. Maybe the forest is the safe place for these struggles though. The sensory input is perfect to allow for true feelings to come out. Social skills like not pushing your fu***ng sister are worked on. Every day I am thankful for Mother Nature and the safe place she has made for my feral children.

Today I tried trail running for the first time and it got me thinking about how maybe doing our workouts in nature could help parents connect to nature & themselves. Let’s make time for it! Also enjoy my asthma voice.
