Police are searching for four armed suspects who went on a shooting spree in Alexandra, Johannesburg, on Thursday night.

SAPS spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo said preliminary reports indicated five people were fatally shot and five injured in separate incidents at different places.

Gauteng provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Elias Mawela has assembled a team comprising different police units and other law enforcement agencies to search for the suspects.

Masondo said the suspects first attacked people in a Toyota Etios on Fourth Avenue and Selborne Street firing shots at them, leaving one person wounded.

The second incident occurred at 11th Avenue and Boulevard Street, where the suspects confronted two people charging cellphones in a car during load-shedding. The assailants robbed the pair of their phones before shooting them. Both the victims were taken to medical care centres for treatment.

The suspects came across their next victim on Boulevard Street, where he was fatally shot.

Another victim was shot on Seventh Avenue, where he died on the scene, while two people were robbed of their cellphones and shoes.

The suspects then attacked three people at Sixth Avenue. One was fatally wounded and the two others were taken for medical treatment.

The last shooting was apparently at Sixth Avenue and Roosevelt Road, where two people were shot inside a Toyota Avanza. Both died at the scene.

Police have opened five cases of murder, five of attempted murder and armed robberies.

A man was arrested after he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Alexandra.

“The suspect is still being profiled to establish if he is linked to the shootings,” said Masondo.

“The firearm will be taken for ballistic tests to establish whether it was used in the commission of crime.”

Masondo said police management was concerned about the proliferation of fi****ms in Alexandra. “Operations to recover such weapons are continuing.”

Mpumalanga police on Friday said they were investigating a triple murder case after three burnt bodies were found in a car that was torched on a farm in Pienaar outside Nelspruit.

Col Donald Mdhluli said the remains were found by a farmworker.

“According to the information, a farmworker went to the farm around 2pm where he noticed upon arrival that the farm gate was opened. Meanwhile, as he recalls, on Monday, the gate was locked when they left. On closer inspection, he realised that there was a car, a Hyundai i10, which was burnt. He further realised that there were human remains in the vehicle,” said Mdhluli.

“The man then alerted police about the discovery. Police went to the scene where they found that the remains were of three people, one in the driver's seat, as well as in the passenger seat and in the boot of the vehicle.”

The identity of the victims was yet to be established.

“The police urge anyone with information that may assist in the investigation to call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send information via MYSAPSAPP. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous,” Mdhluli said.

Meanwhile, Mpumalanga police commissioner Lt-Gen Semakaleng Daphney Manamela called for a speedy arrest of the perpetrators.

“This is a horrible incident and a team of experts has been assembled to investigate this case and trace the perpetrators of this heinous crime. The perpetrators should be hunted down and brought to book” said Manamela.

Free State police are investigating the horrific killing of six women and one man at the Lismore farm in Kestell.

Brig Motantsi Makhele said the bodies of the victims were found by the farm owner.

“It is alleged that on Friday the farm owner came across lifeless bodies of farmworkers inside their house on the farm,” said Makhele.

“Apparently, the victims were brutally shot and killed by [an] unknown suspect. The motive is not yet known. The names of the deceased and their ages are not yet known and couldn't be disclosed as next-of-kin have not identified them formally.”

Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Baile Motswenyane has ordered an urgent mobilisation of maximum resources to ensure the killer or killers are brought to book.

“I instructed the team to work around the clock and ... let me warn the perpetrators that they can run but ultimately the mighty hand of the law will catch up with them,” said Motswenyane.

“Our condolences to the families of these victims who lost their loved ones in this horrible manner,” she added after her visit to the scene.

The police have called on anyone with information to come forward.

“Contact Col Ben Bolsiek of the provincial organised crime unit at 082-466-8530, who will be leading the investigating team, or provide information to Crime Stop on 08600-10111.
