The JALDOOT application was jointly developed by union ministries of Panchayat and Rural Development.
This app can be used by Gram Rojgar Sahyak to measure the water level in a well twice a year before and after monsoon.
It enables the systematic collection of data on ground water levels and storing them in central digital database for analysis.
This data can be used for the implementation of Gram Panchayat Development Plan and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
Using this app, water levels of 2 to 3 wells in a village will be captured.
The water levels in open wells will be measured twice a year – from May 1 to 31 as pre-monsoon water level and again from October 1 to 31 as post-monsoon level.

Lassa fever in Nigeria

Lassa fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic fever caused by Lassa virus, which belongs the family Arenaviridae. It was first discovered in Nigeria in 1969. Humans get infected with this pathogen after being exposed to contaminated food or household items contaminated with urine or faeces of the infected Mastomys rats. This virus is found among the rodent population in several parts of West Africa. It is endemic in African countries such as Benin, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, Togo and Nigeria. About 80 per cent of people who are infected with Lassa fever are asymptomatic. 1 in 5 cases are severe, with the pathogen infecting several organs like liver, spleen and kidney. The early stage of this infection can be treated using the antiviral drug ribavirin.

Symptoms

Mild symptoms include slight fever, fatigue, weakness and headache. Serious symptoms include bleeding, difficulty in breathing, vomiting, pain in chest, back and abdomen, swelling of face and shock. Death occurs two weeks after the onset of symptoms. It mainly occurs because of multiple organ failure.
Indian Government to set up panel to study status of SC converts to Islam and Christianity

Published: September 19, 2022
The Central Government will constitute a national commission to study the social, economic and educational status of members of Scheduled Castes or Dalits who have converted to religions other than Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism.

Key facts

Ranganath Misra Commission

Key facts

This proposed commission is significant as several petitions are currently pending before the Supreme Court seeking SC reservation benefits for Dalits who have converted to Christianity or Islam.

The Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950 under Article 341 states that no individual belonging to religion other than Hinduism, Sikhism or Buddhism can be recognized as a member of the Scheduled Caste.

The original order classified SC members belonging to only Hinduism. It was later amended in 1956 to include Sikhs and in 1990 to include Buddhists.

The proposed commission would have 3 to 4 members with its chairman being a Union Cabinet Minister.

It will be involved in the comprehensive analysis of the changes in status and situation of Dalits who have converted to Christianity or Islam.

It will also study the impact of adding more members into the current SC list.

It will not include members of STs and OBCs who have converted to Islam and Christianity.

This is because the STs receive benefit regardless of their religion and several Christian and Muslim communities are already benefited by being part of the central and states’ lists of OBCs.

SCs are currently given 15 per cent reservation for direct recruitment in central government jobs.

Ranganath Misra Commission

The National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities headed by the former Chief Justice of India Justice Ranganath Misra was set up in 2004 to recommend ways to ensure welfare of socially and economically backward sections among linguistic and religious minorities in India. This commission recommended the complete delinking of SC status from religion and make it religion-neutral like STs. This recommendation was not adopted as it did not have sufficient backing from field studies.

India Discrimination Report 2022

India is among the most important countries when it comes to the global economic growth and structural transformation story.

But, asymmetries still abound in the country’s labour market.

The non-profit Oxfam India recently released the India Discrimination Report, 2022

Key highlights

Labour force participation rate (LFPR) of women in India is just 25 per cent in 2021 – lesser than the figure of 42.7 per cent in 2004-05 and the lowest among the BRICS countries.

Gender discrimination is the main reason behind the 98 per cent employment gap between males and females in India.

Lack of education and work experience are contributing to the lesser wage for women.

The average earning of a man is about 2.5 times that of a woman.

The report concluded that, while there is a decline in discrimination within the Indian labour market over a decade, there still remains high gender inequality.

There is a high probability that women’s employment in decent jobs have no bearing on their endowments.

Women’s educational qualifications have little impact on their employment status.

Due to this, gender discrimination in labour market is almost total in India.

In 2019-20, 60 per cent of all men aging 15 and above have regular salaried and self-employed jobs. During the same period, only 19 per cent of women in that age group had jobs.

The report also found that a large number of qualified women are unwilling to join the workforce because of “family responsibilities” and the need to conform to social norms.

Apart from gender-based salary gaps, the report also found differences in income among castes.

The mean income of regular employed persons belonging to the Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes in urban regions was Rs.15,312. This is lesser than Rs.20,346 earned by those belonging to the General Category.

This means that general category’s earnings is 33 per cent higher than SC/ST communities.
