How can we minimize the effects of AMR? (Video 5 of 5)
This short video series is part of our research to create awareness about the grave issue of antimicrobial resistance. We are engaged in an invisible, silent war, a war against microbes. As per WHO reports,” Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the top global public health and development threats. It is estimated that bacterial AMR was directly responsible for 1.27 million global deaths in 2019”. The World Bank estimates that AMR could result in US$ 1 trillion additional healthcare costs by 2050, and US$ 1 trillion to US$ 3.4 trillion gross domestic product (GDP) losses per year by 2030. These alarming figures should make us all deeply concerned and aware of the urgency of this issue.

This day is observed by sisters applying tika to the foreheads of their brothers to ensure long life and thanking them for the protection they provide. Sisters make a special garland for their brothers. Brothers sit on the floor while their sisters perform their puja. The puja follows a traditional ritual in which sisters circle brothers, dripping oil on the floor from a copper pitcher and applying oil to their brother’s hair,
following which a seven-colour tika is applied on the brother’s forehead. Along with the seven-coloured tika, sisters provide brothers with Sagun, sweets, garland.
On the fourth day of Tihar is observed as Govardhan Puja, which is worship towards goverdhan mountain. Cowdung is taken as representative of the mountain and is worshiped. The fourth day of Tihar also generally coincides with the first day of the Nepal Sambat calendar and thus, is the celebratory Mha Puja for the Newar community. Additionally, majority of the Newar community on the night also perform “Mha/ Ma Puja” (worship of self).
On this day, people worship cows. In Hinduism, a cow signifies prosperity and wealth. In ancient times, people benefited a lot from cows. Thus, on this day people show their gratefulness to cows by garlanding and feeding their cows with the best grass.
This day of Tihar is devoted to oxen, known as the backbone of farming in Nepal. These sturdy animals are worshipped with tika, garlands, and special meals as a token of appreciation for their invaluable support in agriculture.
Dogs, which are believed to be messengers of Lord Yamaraj, the God of Death, are worshiped each year on this day. People offer garlands, tika and delicious food to dogs and acknowledge the cherished relationship between humans and dogs.
Lakshmi, the patron goddess of the festival, is welcomed into homes that have been cleaned and the doorways and windows decorated with garlands made out of marigolds. Diyos are put up all around the home, especially in doorways and windowsills, while electric lights are draped over houses in the belief that the goddess will not visit dark homes.
