Building Authentic Community

It is no secret that brands are nothing without their communities. Nonprofits need people who believe in their causes to support them and businesses rely on their customers showing up day after day to stay open. While I have already addressed Online Community Standards and what they are – this month we are going to examine building community and what that looks like online and off.

Building community begins with the vision offline. What does your organization stand for? What do you value? This will lead to your organization organically attracting others to your cause that are like-minded in the offline and online worlds.

How is this concept different online and how do I build a community around my organization? First of all, online publishing opens up a wider geographical outreach than those who are in your immediate region. This means you can attract almost a limitless number of individuals to follow your cause. But is this wise? In my opinion no. Why? It is simple.

An AUTHENTIC online community is defined as having connections with people that you can provide a benefit for and/or people who can also provide a benefit for your organization. The ideal is to build a community of REAL individuals around your organization that show up both online and off – not just another online account followed by bots.

You might be asking, “Ok, I know that. But HOW?” This is trickier to implement and more up to your organization as a whole. EVERYTHING your organization writes, publishes and creates needs to point back to your original vision and values. If you don’t implement with your vision and values in mind - people will see right through you. Integrity counts. Consistency is important. And engagement is critical.

In an age when many things can be faked online attract the right community by being authentic to your organization’s values, purpose and vision.

I hope this has inspired you to dig deep, reflect and start being more authentic in all areas of your brand’s identity.

Face Your Fear – Embrace Memes

Only two months ago I was discussing Christmas in July. Now it is time to face your fears. It’s true – across media platforms and in stores it is now officially spooky season. Which means it is fall meme season too.

It’s difficult to consume any media online right now and NOT come across a fall themed meme. What is a meme? Basically, a parody on something prevalent within pop-culture or a quote that is more of a joke usually with written text and shared widely across the internet. It can be either a photo or a video. Now, let’s get back to how and why you should care.

Ever since the “PSL” (Pumpkin Spice Late) became “basic” - fall memes have had a long and vibrant history. Many large brands have attempted to embrace the meme culture and many times miss the mark. So how can small businesses and non-profits benefit from dabbling in memes?

First, make the meme prevalent to your industry or product in some way for your audience to appreciate and increase the odds of engagement with your meme. OR, if a follower has already created an amazing meme secure their approval, then share it to your audience.

Second, make sure you are sharing your meme in the right place. Memes feel best engaged with on a “Story” than as a post if you didn’t create it yourself. However, if you did create the graphic or video (and didn’t just change the text) then sharing your meme to your “Page” as a “Post” is warranted. Ownership with memes can get a bit tricky especially ones that are widely circulated. Keeping your original memes to your posts can help protect your new creation.

Third, have fun! While dabbling in memes every day isn’t recommended – if you have an idea for one that meets any of the criteria above you should go for it! The correct engagement and usage of memes can help spread the word about your small business and your products.

What is Audience Engagement?

Your brand’s social media channel isn’t just a one-way communication tool. However, some small businesses and non-profits still use it as if it were only a one-way communication tool like a notice board. While it is important to use your social media channel this way it shouldn’t be the ONLY way you are using your social media accounts.

Many customers prefer to message brands directly through many different social media platforms rather than email or call. Sometimes it’s positive and sometimes it’s not. The same can be said about comments or brand tags in customer’s photos.

What is most important to customers and fans is that your brand is responsive on your social media channel when they are in conversation with you. This responsiveness is called “audience engagement” by social media managers. Your social media account could have the best content, but if you do not have an audience engagement strategy you will see that your reputation as a brand may start to falter.

EXCERPT: Christmas in July

Although the weather is very warm and the last thing we have on our minds right now are the winter holidays - I’m going to try to convince you to get thinking about your Christmas and holiday content strategy now.

Why? There are several advantages to start planning out your winter holiday strategy 6 months out. Among them are:

1. Increased brand visibility online. (Christmas is an infamous time for saturated social media feeds. The earlier to prepare the better off you will be).
2. Ensuring you have enough time to complete edits and create your best content.
3. The time to refine your own cohesive and effective content strategy (including AD buys, website online sales and organic strategies).
4. Beating the big companies to the holiday conversation online. (Which lately has begun in late September - so really you only have 2 months to plan, if you start today.)
5. Summer can be a slow time for a lot of small organizations. Mainly due to people taking vacations (which isn’t a bad thing). Spend this time dreaming about what you want your digital storytelling to look like during the busy winter holiday season.

It’s no secret - small organizations could use a boost during the busy Christmas and holiday season. With big box stores having several advantages during this time of year, it’s important to make sure your holiday content strategy is a winner. Get time on your side and starting in July is pivotal to increasing your chances of having an advantage over those other larger organizations.
