📰Latest Article: „Sustainable and inclusive development in left-behind places“ – Maximilian Benner, Michaela Trippl & Robert Hassink

This editorial examines the concept of "left-behind places" and the need for policies that address both social and environmental challenges, such as climate change and pollution. It highlights the difficulty of balancing sustainability and social inclusiveness in these economically disadvantaged regions.

To the article:

Scholarly work in economic geography and regional science has recently seen a renewed interest in spatial inequalities, driven significantly by the debate on left-behind places and the resulting geographies of discontent. The plight of left-behind places calls for new place-based policy responses th...

📰Latest Article: „Aging and real estate prices in Germany“ – Philipp Breidenbach, Philipp Jäger & Lisa Taruttis

A study analyzing data from over 10,000 municipalities found that average sales prices in 2020 could have been up to 12% higher if the population age distribution had remained the same as in 2008. The research shows that aging reduces prices, increases property availability, and highlights varying impacts across different property types and regions.

📰Latest Article: „What hampers research collaboration in a region?“ – Tobias Johannes Hertrich & Thomas Brenner

Research collaboration is an important instrument for innovation and knowledge transfer. In this respect, barriers that prevent or impede research collaboration between research institutions and companies are of particular importance. 📰Latest Article: „Advancing inclusive innovation policy in the UK’s second-tier city-regions“ - Katherine Parsons, Rick Delbridge, Elvira Uyarra, David Waite, Robert Huggins & Kevin Morgan

With the levelling up agenda taking shape, city-regions in the UK are developing innovation and business support policies in seeking to deliver on a range of goals from traditional productivity concerns to wider social and environmental imperatives. To overcome model-related challenges and improve predictions, the paper applies the machine learning algorithm XGBoost to estimate spatial interactions. Statistics and visual representations are provided for model evaluation, as well as for evaluating and interpreting independent variables. The methods are applied to analyze the spatial mobility of high-school graduates enrolling in higher education institutions in Germany at the county-level.
