"White House Praises California Model; Says Equity Is Critical in COVID Fight"
Aldon Thomas Stiles | California Black Media

Last week Dr. Cameron Webb, the White House COVID-19 Response Team’s Senior Policy Advisor for Equity, discussed with California Black Media (CBM) the importance of fairness in the country’s fight against COVID. He complimented California’s pandemic response model.

“There has been a great model in California, which has always been a leader in some of these equitable initiatives,” Webb said.

He praised the work of Deputy Director for the California Department of Public Heath’s (CDPH) Office of Health Equity Dr. Rohan C. Radhakrishna.

On Jan. 18, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a new $146 million work service program for college students that offers $10,000 stipends for college expenses to more than 6,000 students who participate in local community projects.

The effort called “Californians for All College Corps” requires students enrolled in the program to complete 450 hours of community service over the course of the school year to receive the funding.

"Weber Shares Thoughts on Framework for Reparations Eligibility"

Antonio Ray Harvey | California Black Media

California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber shared her thoughts on who should be compensated for the injustices of slavery during the Task Force to Study and Develop Reparations Proposals for African Americans’ sixth meeting.

To open the first discussion of 2022, Weber testified virtually in front of the nine-member panel. She said eligibility should be based on “the impact of slavery” on enslaved Black people and their descendants as opposed to “those who were never slaves.”

"San Bernardino School District Opens Applications for Vacant Board Position"
By Manny Otiko

The San Bernardino County Unified School District Board of Education has decided to fill a recently open seat by requesting for applications. The seat came open because of the death of board member Dr. Margaret Hill. Hill was a renowned community activist.

“We know how much Dr. Margaret Hill loved our District and how much she valued her own service on this Board of Education,” said Board President Dr. Scott Wyatt in a press release. “We also know she’d want us to move our District forward in the best interest of the students, staff, and families we serve regardless of our grief. We are honoring her by beginning this process now.”

According to a press release, the application will stay open until Feb. 2. Seven people will serve on the San Bernardino Board of Education. (The current total is six.)

The district press release also stated that applicants for the position must be over the age of 18, live within the district’s boundaries, and be registered to vote in San Bernardino County. Candidate interviews will be held on Feb. 8 and the new board member will be announced on Feb. 15.

The candidate chosen for the position will serve from Feb. 15 through December 2022. According to the press release, candidates interested in serving for the rest of the term, which ends in December 2024, will have to run for election.

“Feds, State Take Steps to Ease Burden on Some Student Loan Borrowers”

Lillian Lewis earned multiple degrees from California State University Sacramento (also known as Sac State University).
Lewis said, before the pandemic began, paying down the high student loan debt she accrued to cover her tuition and living expenses while in school put a strain on her monthly budget. Those arrears (“in the thousands”) with growing interest made it difficult for her to make ends meet. “Biden Vows He, Manchin Will ‘Get Something Done’ On $2T Bill”

By Lisa Mascaro and Farnoush Amiri, Associated Press

Washington, D.C (AP) — President Joe Biden appeared determined Tuesday to return to the negotiating table with Sen. Joe Manchin, the holdout Democrat who effectively tanked the party’s signature $2 trillion domestic policy initiative with his own jarring year-end announcement.

Biden, responding to reporters’ questions at the White House, joked that he holds no grudges against the conservative West Virginia senator whose rejection of the social services and climate change bill stunned Washington just days ago.
