The gold price has been consistently underestimated in recent years, with the realized level an average 8.5% above the World Bank’s (WB) 2018-2023 forecasts. The average was skewed up for some metals by 2021, when there was a major beat of forecasts made during a bearish 2020. Excluding this, the WB’s silver forecast underestimates the realized price by about half the level of gold, the copper estimate is quite close to the actual price and there is an overestimation of the aluminum price.

The price to book ratio (P/B) of a group including most of the larger cap TSXV gold stocks has dropped to 2.0x in 2023, near the 2.1x of 2017 and 1.9x of 2018 at the tail end of the last gold bear market.

While it is tempting to conclude that we are near trough valuations, there is still some risk of further declines in small cap equities overall, given high interest rates, which could drag down junior gold prices further, barring a big rebound in the metal price.

However, it can be said that valuations do not look overly excessive, with the P/B for the group at less than half the 5.5x sector boom peak reached in 2020.
