"Music in Space" promises to be out of this world

Forget "out of the box." The Music in Space event which takes place from 7 - 10 July 2022 at the Orlando Stadium, promises to be out of this world - literally.

This new global art platform, another other-worldly initiative by well-known cutting edge artist, eventmaker, marketing guru, singer, guitarplayer,
filmcomposer, sounddesigner and filmmaker with specializing in sustainability - Bjorn Vido - is a first of its kind and South Africa plays host to it.

For the viewer this is going to be a traditional concert with really good music and entertainment. For the live audience, however, the biggest difference will be that the Audio and Video signals will be sent up in space, via satellites and
weather balloons, and the world will be watching and interacting LIVE via SoMe.

This 'environmental experience', developed in culsultation with NASA experts, astronauts andleaders on the forefront of todays cutting edge space exploration efforts, came about as a result of Bjorn's passion to create a new perspective and awareness of the trouble our planet is in.
"Urgent climate action is needed," he tells. "Single voices are lost in the void,
but now we are creating the means for people to rise together and collectively make real change."

Visuals, music and celebrity interviews will be the order of the day, using what is called the ”Overview Effect. " This effect is how astronauts describe the transcendent feeling of viewing earth from space.

HOW WILL IT WORK?

By using high altitude weather balloons, satellites and cameras, the “Overview Effect” is created on earth.
"No countries, no borders. Just the small blue marble floating around in space with the hopes that taking a moment to appreciate the overwhelming beauty of the earth will inspire more people to
want to do better and change their habits."

The balloon takes around 90 minutesto rise to its maximum height, and the same to descend. The sound of the event wil be transmitted into space via satellites and then recorded together with the images from the rising balloon and then be sent back on 'SoMe' and Television globally.
"We will interact with the crowd on
Facebook / Instagram / SoMe, so it's not a one way show, but people can participate, and get their personal messages out into space. Weather balloon technology is safe, and almost 150 years old," Bjorn assures.

GPS and LANDING
A GPS tracker has been placed onboard the balloon for 2 reasons:
The balloon will be tracked from the airport, so the flight is safe and in order to ensure the payload with the cameras, satelite equipment and audio is found and also in order for the video to be uploaded
"We don't know where the wind will take the balloon, the show will end in a search.
We will go look for it and that is a SoMe event in itself. We might have to get a 4x4 if it lands in the desert."
He says it will typically be a maximum of 30-50 km from the launch location."You never know. That's part of the art."

Music in Space is a multi-artist event, transmitted live into space from live stadium performances and venues around the world. The show itself, is a mix of original music from Bjorn himself, local artists and is supported by powerful speeches of hope.

-- Msaki brings double PLATINUMB to your ears.

Seeing artists release a double album in these modern times is a rare find and even rarer when it is an album that makes skipping even one song really difficult.

Msaki, whose real name is Asanda Lusaseni Mvana, is a South African singer and songwriter born on the south coast of East London, South Africa. She has over the years featured on some of South Africa's dance hits like Prince Kaybee - Fetch Your Life.

Those who love Msaki would know that she has a melodic and angelic voice that can give light to even the darkest of days. Her voice in conjunction with South Africa's biggest producers was guaranteed to result in nothing less than a 36-song double album worthy of platinum status anywhere in the world.

This is Msaki's second studio album divided into two albums titled "PLATINUMB HEART OPEN" and "PLATINUMB HEART BEATING" respectively.

Her first album, "Plantinumb Heart Beating" is a dance album that features the likes of Sun-El Musician Simmy Abidoza , current male artist and producer of the year Kabzadesmall_ and Grammy nominee Black Coffee .This album is the one you'll probably be hearing a lot on the dance floors this December.

"Platinumb Heart Open" is more on the mellow - the album one plays on a Sunday afternoon sitting with family and friends. The eighteen-track album features Bulelwa Siliziwe Lusaseni on Hymn 121, TRESOR on Hold me down, and opens up with 'Umsindo' featuring Alie-Keys in a song that narrates the notion of not giving up.

It's been a long time since she released her last album and man the wait was worth it.

The album is out on all digital stores and Platinumb Heart Beating is currently the third-best album in South Africa.

16-year-old girl from venda releases a book tackling abuse.

Masindi Managa has done it. She grew up fetching water from the Tshamurenzhele Fountain and the thought of writing a book seemed far-fetched for her up until now. Masindi Managa was born in Thembaluvhilo, Makula Village currently resides in Louis Trichardt where she is a Grade 11 pupil at LIT Murunwa School of Excellence.

The book titled Ardour is an excellent collection of poems tackling abuse in its many different forms such as domestic violence, love, trust, and betrayal.

In the poem ‘I miss the days' Masindi writes ‘Life was much simpler when we were kids, frolicking in the rain and marveling at the appearance of a rainbow’. The imagery that ‘Frolicking in the rain’ paints is that of carefreeness, where a kid has less social and familial responsibilities but only ‘frolic’.

Masindi Managa's worldview shows that she understands very well that she needs to lead a responsible life. Just like many teenagers her age, she misses being a kid, there is evidence in the book that she has accepted being a teen for the fact that a planted tree that is being watered (by parents) has to grow.

Being a teenager comes with some responsibilities. Masindi has come to terms with the fact that, as much as there are good times, there will be hard times and challenges in life. She paints this picture succinctly in the poem ‘No, it’s fine 1’, because all pains, frustrations, and challenges ‘will be water under the bridge’.

Masindi Managa further says that even though some might refuse to help, one must seek solace from within, that is, self-assurance and self-esteem in the face of storms ‘because I have been alone for some time now.' This conclusion is strikingly evident in the second poem ‘No, it’s fine 2’, where she confidently writes ‘I’m done playing the guilty card’. With that, she is assuming full responsibility for her life.

Ardour is clear proof that parents should always look out for the aptitudes in their children and support that. Most parents discourage their children from fully reaching the actualisation of their aptitudes in art or sports when they are still pupils because they think that that might derail them from the routes of formal education which should lead them to actual careers. The publication of Ardour is a milestone, and Masindi’s parents deserve a toast of appraisal and acknowledgment for allowing their daughter to shine at this younger age.

Ardour will soon be available on digital platforms. Readers can place their orders by sending an email to [email protected].

We met up with Thabang, an aspiring star actor from Kwa-Thema who plays the lead role in this locally produced web series.

Telling the story of how many young people in the country get to live their lives with a consistent need for the drug, Thabang excels in telling the story of the many ways that nyaope users can affect and influence a community.

"It's not every day that you get to hear their stories and people are always judging without having understanding of who these addicts are and how they came to use nyaope.

This series is also about how many of these young users hustle about on the streets to survive"

"I wanted to show the audience how people who smoke nyaope live their lives, to showcase their desperate means of survival and need to get the next fix", tells Thabang.

The 25-year-old who was inspired by Yizo Yizo (The iconic South African drama series that aired on our television screens in the early 2000s) also studied Travel and Tourism at the Ekuruhuleni FET college before his love for acting dragged him out of class to focus on this.

His liberation, he says, comes with telling kasi stories and his aspiration is to play more leading roles on bigger productions, telling authentic township stories.

He recently played a similar role in a locally produced movie expected to be released next year, produced by award-winning actor and producer Kagiso Modupe.

Mahlanganisa is a self-funded series shot in Kwa-Thema.

Morne Steyn retires from Springboks by Sabelo Mashego.

Springboks iconic flyhalf, Morne Steyn, has closed the curtain on his illustrious Bok career.

In an incredible turn of events, Steyn (37) has ended his time with the Boks the same way he famously introduced himself to the Green and Gold.

In 2009 when he made his international debut in a highly successful year for the Boks which included a 3-0 whitewash of the All Blacks in the Tri-Nations, he came off the bench in the second Test of the British and Irish Lions Series at Loftus Versfeld and buried a 53m penalty to dramatically clinch the series for South Africa.

Fast forward 12 years later, his educated boot was again the difference as he came off the bench in the third and decisive Test of the British and Irish Lions Series to slot two penalties and help the Boks win the series.

Part of the All Blacks' whitewash in 2009 was a 31-19 Bok win over their fiercest foes in Durban where Steyn scored all of the Boks' 31 points. The points-machine kicked eight penalties and converted his own try to set a new record of most points by an individual in a Tri-Nations match.

At the 2011 Rugby World Cup, Steyn scored the most points by a player, 62.

He ends his career with a total of 742 Springbok points, only second on the Boks' all-time most points table to Percy Montgomery (893) who, unlike Steyn, was an incumbent in his position.

Steyn ends with 68 Springbok caps.

Laugh a lot at Skhumba’s Weekend Comedy Special

Covid has drenched the country in fear, doom and gloom. We South Africans are super resilient and always manage to bounce back with a bang.

One example of such a bounce back is the return of popular comedian, Skhumba Hlophe, to Carnival City's Mardi Gras Theatre for his first comedy ensemble this year dubbed "Skhumba’s Weekend Comedy Special."

For two nights only, Skhumba will feature himself and a crazy line-up of his comedian friends on Saturday, 29 and Sunday, 30 October 2021.

This funny man took his last tour “Big Banger Comedy” around the country, from June 2019 to February 2020 featuring some already established comedians and it received great support from his followers and comedy consumers.

As always, this upcoming show caters to a variety of audiences as comedians will deliver their material in English, Xhosa, Zulu, Sotho, Tswana and Pedi.

Skhumba is one of SA's most seasoned comedians with a massively long list of accolades under the belt, including a successful show on Showmax called “Trippin’ With Skhumba."

His “Walk This Way” Wheelchair campaign, which is close to his heart, had to be put on hold because of the global pandemic. It has, however, seen 500 wheelchairs donated around Gauteng since 2016.

Skhumba the Big Banger also still makes people cry with laughter on his new and improved radio show, which he co-hosts with Thomas Msengana on Kaya FM called “Thomas & Skhumba in the morning” every weekday from 06h00 – 09h00.

Limited seating is available at his upcoming Mardi Gras appearance and has been reduced to 250 people in order to comply with Covid-19 protocols.

Tickets can be booked through Computicket at R200 per ticket. The show starts at 18h00 and is not for persons under 18.

Watch this interview with Faith Nyathi, Philanthropist, & founder of Girls Light the World (GlowSA).

Faith Nyathi sat down with Mahume from We Luv SA to talk about family, founding Glow SA and, her love for South Africa.

Faith, who was born in Wadeville (a small township in Ekurhuleni) grew up in Dalpark before moving to Kwa-Thema three years ago, is the founder of GLOW SA - a non-profit organisation aimed at helping young girls from Kwa-Thema and the surrounding areas with emotional and financial support.

"It started with just seeing the need in my community. There are children who come from child-headed homes, there are children that are going through teenage pregnancy and we just wanted to reach out and bridge the gap," says Faith.

The organisation which focuses on teenagers has over thirty girls under its care and assists them with making better life decisions regarding their careers and everyday challenges. Most of these girls are from disadvantaged backgrounds.

"Sometimes they come to us for financial help, sometimes they come to us for emotional help, and sometimes they come to us with things that we as a team haven't gone through but look for ways to help find solutions to their problems."

Faith, who attended Dalpark Secondary School studied Early Childhood Development and aspires to have an ECD centre. She says that her passion and love for kids is what drives her to do what she does.

The name Glow which is an acronym for "Girls Light Our World" and the organization is aimed at inspiring young girls to become the light of the world and mentoring them to realise that they can bring light to any situation they find themselves in.

"For me, it's about fulfillment. When I started to GLOW it was mainly because I never wanted these girls to not go through what I went through. Not knowing where and how you fit into the family structure or school environment or just society in general and if I can help them in any way then I would've achieved my dream."

GLOW has four females and recently added a male member to their team to look at ways in which a boy child can also be assisted through the organisation.

The foundation relies on various donors and holds various campaigns around Ekurhuleni to raise funds. One such is their cake sale which is held every second week of the month.

For more information about how you can donate or find more about Faith and GLOW SA, you can email them at glow [email protected] contact Faith on 0691435479.

Bafana Bafana - South Africa's job not yet done by Sabelo Sabz Mashego

Goals from Teboho Mokoena, Mothobi Mvala and Evidence Makgopa handed Bafana Bafana an important 3-1 victory over Ethiopia in their second round World Cup qualifier match at the Bahir Dar Stadium this past Saturday.

Mokoena opened the scoring in the match at the stroke of halftime to put South Africa ahead through a free kick at the edge of the box. His efforts, however, were aided by a howler from Ethiopia, goalkeeper Fasil Gebremichael.

The home side equalised through a brilliant free kick from Getaneh Kebede 16 minutes through the second half, but their celebrations were short-lived. Mvala restored Bafana's lead five minutes later in the 71st minute before Makgopa ensured the win with an audacious lob in the dying minutes.

The result cemented South Africa's lead in Group G, giving them 7 points from their first three outings. However, the job is not done yet with the second leg of the group getting underway tonight at the FNB Stadium against Ethiopia.

The national side will put itself in a commanding position with a win ahead of their final two tough match-ups in mid-November against Zimbabwe and Ghana respectively.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be held in Qatar.

How qualification works:

• Second round: 40 teams (ranked 1–26 and 14 first-round winners) will be divided into ten groups of four teams to play home-and-away round-robin matches. The ten group winners advance to the third round.

• Third round: The ten second round group winners play home-and-away over two legs. The five winners qualify for the World Cup.
