SUMMER OF SOUL!! (aka Black Woodstock) The 60’s were a turbulent decade for African Americans. The Civil Rights Struggle was met with pushback and violence in The States, while black soldiers were disproportionately being assigned to combat units in Vietnam. The assassination of MLK in 1968 turned pent-up anger into violence and destruction in cities across America. With the fear of violence still in the air in 1969, a Harlem lounge singer took it upon himself to organize and book a free summer long concert series in Harlem to promote peace, love, and soul. Bringing some of the biggest names in soul music to the neighborhood; including Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, and Nina Simone. The footage from these concerts sat unseen in a basement for 50 years before being unearthed and made into a feature documentary, Questlove’s directorial debut.

This week and review Summer of Soul. They are joined by Zach’s dad, Archie Jones, who saw most of these artists and many more back in the day, to discuss music and its impact on the black experience.

JAY LENO SUX!! Remember that time Jay Leno retired from The Tonight Show and handed the reigns over to Conan, only to return a little bit later and give Conan the boot? Ever wonder what the current status of late night television would be if Leno had just stayed away? Or, if Letterman had been the one to get The Tonight Show instead of Jay, as everyone had expected?

This week the fellas blow up the show a little more, then our resident historian, , walks through the history of The Battle To Succeed Johnny Carson and how one of the least funny comedians in the world landed the coveted position and ruined everything for everybody else.

What could we do differently? How do we improve? Most shows would probably hold this kind of discussion behind closed doors, but why not let all our listeners in? RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK IS 40! Believe it or not, there was a time when George Lucas could pitch a movie idea to film studios, with Steven Spielberg attached as director, and the studios would say “NO”. Fortunately, Paramount eventually gave the green light and Indiana Jones, one of the greatest characters in film history, was brought to life.

This week and take a deep dive into one of the finest motion pictures of all-time. They cap off their adventure by playing a recently unearthed Raiders Of The Lost Ark read-along story book, which probably belongs in a museum. Enjoy!

1971, FIFTY YEARS AGO!! The microprocessor was invented, birthing the digital age. The 26th Amendment was passed, lowering the voting age to eighteen. Apollo 14 successfully landed American astronauts on the moon for the third time. The Vietnam War was raging and no one really understood why. The anti-war movement was in full effect. The New York Times and Washington Post began releasing The Pentagon Papers, exposing decades of Government corruption. Tricky Dick was being a tricky dick. AND… our favorite rock stars released some of the greatest albums of all time; including LA Woman, by the Doors, Joni Mitchell’s Blue, Carole King’s Tapestry, and John Lennon’s Imagine.

This week, after watching the pilot episode of the new series 1971, on Apple TV+, and were inspired to break out the old Best of The Best™️ brackets and determine which album from 1971 is truly The Best of The Best™️. Which one will it be?

NEW EPISODE!! We’ve spent the last year and a half being socially distant and isolated, with our faces covered by masks. Now nearly 50% of all US adults have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, with over 60% having received at least one shot. Case numbers and deaths are on a long tail decline, health restrictions and mask mandates are being lifted. The CDC is telling us that if you’re fully vaccinated, two weeks out from your second shot, it’s safe to resume life as usual. That sounds awesome, but for some it might not be so easy to do after a year of hardwiring our brains to live life much more cautiously.

This week, and discuss their experience crawling out of isolation and Bracing For Re-Entry, as they work toward getting back to normal after receiving their vaccines.

RAM is 50!! With The Beatles in his rearview mirror and one solo album to his credit already, by 1971 Paul McCartney was free to chase any musical ambition of his choosing, with any collaborator he wanted. He decided to team up with his wife Linda and make one of the quirkiest, and at times weirdest, albums of his career. He threw in a hearty helping of domestic bliss, mixed in a few shots at his former bandmates, embraced a little bit of nonsense, and mixed it all up with his impeccable gift of melody and musicianship. The result was RAM. Released on May 17, 1971. Fifty years ago today!

This week on SAZETU, and discuss how one of their favorite albums went from being loathed by critics to being loved by all, and now considered as one of the forebearers of the indie-pop genre, over the course of its 50 years.

Movies. We love ‘em! While there’s nothing wrong with a decent sequel, remake, or franchise film; what the hell happened to good old fashioned original standalone films? Are good ideas just too difficult to come up with these days? The fellas are here to put that question to the test and lend Hollywood a helping hand.

This week on SAZETU, and create and pitch their own original movie ideas from scratch, working backwards from titles that they’ve each brought to the table and presented to one another. From there they work out basic plot points, key developments, primary stars, and who should direct. The seeds for some classics have been planted. Which of these movies would you like to see most?

Marvel’s ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’ could have stuck with the formula; bad guy needs to get a thing so he can take over the world, Bird Guy and Metal Arm Man overcome some initial set back, then save the day with punches and lasers, thwarting the plans of the bad guy, who is essentially just an evil version of the good guy. Instead, ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’ took a complex view into the history of race in America, borders, refugees, displaced people, health and wealth inequalities, eugenics, supremacy, American exceptionalism, modern racism, police brutality, and the complexities of what it might mean for a black man to take on the mantle of Captain America. Was it entirely successful? No, but it was a bold step for the MCU and it got a lot of things right.

This week on SAZETU, and discuss What The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Got Right… and Wrong. What were your thoughts on The Falcon and The Winter Soldier?

It would be an understatement to say that the last thirteen months have been difficult. Thank goodness for canine companionship! Many animals were welcomed into new homes this year and greeted with round the clock love and affection. For a lot of us, it was our playful pet pals who helped us stay sane while the world outside got crazier and crazier.

Last week a major news network took it upon themselves to throw dirt at Paul Simon. The fellas won’t stand for it!
While reporting the sale of his catalog to Sony, NBC News had the nerve to call Simon a “historical footnote to Bob Dylan.” How rude!! They discuss Simon’s incredible career and create a playlist with some of their favorite Simon tunes. The episode and playlist can be found here: linktree.com/sazetu

As a grade school student, did you have a teacher who stood out above the rest? A teacher who broke through to you in a way no other teachers could? Made you feel like the most important person in the room and made learning fun?

In this week’s episode, the fellas catch up with their sixth grade teacher, Diane Murphy, to discuss the current state of education and how an “outside of the box” approach to teaching fits into an increasingly more rigid and standardized system.
