Today, December 1st 2021, is World AIDS day and here at The Health Palette we want to take the stigma away from conditions such as HIV and AIDS.
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the body's immune system and if not treated can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). AIDS is a potentially life-threatening condition that puts people at increased risk of infections, illness and death.
HIV and AIDS disproportionately affect people in the black community. In the UK black people make up about 2% of the population but in 2020 16% of those newly diagnosed with HIV were of Black African ethnicity.
There is no treatment for HIV / AIDS however there are many effective medications. By getting diagnosed early and taking medication, many people with HIV won't go on to develop AIDS and will live a relatively normal life. Both Magic Johnson and Billy Porter are two celebrities who have HIV and though they do not have AIDS, have spoken openly about their diagnosis and the positive effect of medication.
As black people, it's important to look after our health, educate ourselves and not give into the stigma. We have to advocate for ourselves.
Femi Kuti, in his interview with PRI The Takeaway stated that his popular father, musician Fela Kuti, died from AIDS however like so many, denied his diagnosis. Today, this doesn't have to be the case.
Get tested and get treated.
