This playful interaction between a Humpback Dolphin and a Dugong has seldom been documented.
Dugongs graze on seagrass, whilst dolphins feed on small fish and crustaceans, therefor it is unlikely this behaviour is of any benefit to their feedings habits.
The two marine mammals appear to be socialising with one another, chasing, splashing and spinning, is this a flirtatious act, or a type of predatory behaviour? After weeks of research, I’m still finding it difficult to explain this surprising relationship - one I’ll be leaving open to the experts.
