Millennial Money Laundering!
On Tuesday, authorities arrested a husband and wife (that’s her above) accused of attempting to launder 119,754 stolen bitcoin—valued at $4.5 billion.
Along with the arrest of the couple, Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, the Justice Department announced that it had seized more than 94,000 of the allegedly stolen bitcoin, valued at $3.6 billion—the largest financial seizure in the agency’s history.
According to the DOJ, over the ensuing five years Lichtenstein and Morgan conspired to launder that stolen bitcoin through a complex process that involved depositing the funds into various currency exchanges and darknet markets using fictitious identities, and then withdrawing some as cash from Bitcoin ATMs, and spending some on NFTs, gold, and Walmart gift cards. The DOJ says the couple deposited some of the funds into their own accounts.

At the beginning of this year, the resale platform StockX introduced their “Vault” NFTs, which turned some of the culture’s most popular releases into the digital collectible. Each represented a physical version — stored, brand new, and comfortable in a secure facility — and one would be able to “flip” their pair all while avoiding seller fees, shipping, and the like. It was also possible to redeem the NFT in the near future, and the company even mentioned the possibility of special benefits, such as limited promotions, early releases, and cultural events. The images themselves are what garnered scrutiny from Nike, and it’s exactly why the brand is taking StockX to court. While representatives are avoiding comment at this time, the Swoosh has stated that the StockX NFTs infringe on their trademarks and could cause confusion for consumers.

Solano, who’s more commonly known as ‘Gordon Goner’ claimed that the men were ‘doxxed against their will’.
The founders have always been anonymous, even completing interviews with major outlets like Rolling Stone and the New Yorker with their fake names.
Greg Solano was discovered to be a 32-year-old writer and editor. Wylie Aronow was discovered to be a 35-year-old. Both met when growing up in Florida. The two men later posted on Twitter releasing images of their faces in the ‘Web2 vs Web3 me’ trend, although they probably didn’t want to.

, one of the largest micro-posting sites on the internet, is reportedly venturing further into the world of non-fungible tokens ( ). The company is testing a new functionality that allows users to set NFTs as profile pics, something Twitter is already doing now. Reddit released its own batch of NFTs, called , in June 2021, albeit via a limited release. This feature will stop any pesky right-clicker from using your NFT as their profile picture without first buying the NFT. The pre-requisite to getting an NFT profile picture is a crypto wallet. Crypto wallets allow you to hold and transact (buy, sell, convert, send, etc.) with tokens owned by your public wallet address. This includes NFTs which are a type of token.

Link your Ethereum wallet to your Twitter account, and you'll be presented with a list of NFTs you own (verification is available only for Ethereum-based NFTs, at the moment, though a representative for the company clarified that this is only the “first iteration” of a feature that may go on to support other blockchains).

Choose an NFT, and your profile picture – typically enclosed within a circle – will get a nifty new hexagonal border. If a pesky right-clicker tries to use your NFT as their profile picture without first buying the token, they will still be able to use the image, but they will be stuck with the classic circle frame.
