The World Health Organization (WHO) has agreed that there is generally little data to assess vaccine safety in pregnancy. However, The WHO has held its position that Covid-19 vaccinations should be safe for pregnant and lactating women to receive, stating it doesn’t have any specific reason to believe there will be specific risks that would outweigh the benefits of vaccination for pregnant women.
A guidance released by the WHO suggested against women that are pregnant or lactating taking the Moderna vaccine in particular. There has also been reports of lactating women being denied the Moderna vaccine in Illinois and elsewhere due safety concerns. There are no specific risks involved with the Moderna vaccine, the issue lies in pregnant and lactating women not being included in the initial trials of the vaccine. This is problematic as the safety of this vaccine for women that fall into this category cannot be guaranteed or supported by clinical data.
