Things Penangites do on weekend? Roadtrip!

This time, we're going to Balik Pulau! We first tried out Balik Pulau famous Pasembur which was located at Balik Pulau food court, on the side facing Jalan Tun Sardon. Reasonably priced, Balik Pulau Pasembur serves their Pasembur with different types of fried fritters, as well as shredded vegetables such as jicama and cucumber.

We then tried the famous natural traditional hand-made steamed bun (天然传统美味香包). It was said that these hand-made buns were sold like hot cakes during weekends, finishing in less than an hour after the opening of the shop. We tried their Lava Brown Sugar steamed bun, and Brown Sugar in the bun literally was like lava! Warm, soft, yet tasty, you wouldn’t stop after having the first bite!

We later tried Best Cendol Balik Pulau which was a roadside stall located within the vicinity of the area we parked. Rich with Santan (coconut milk), topped generously with cendol, it was indeed a refreshing refreshment for us!

After having a heavy meal, we drove ourselves to a famous healing spot in Balik Pulau, Pantai Malindo to have a stroll. Surrounded by mangroves forest, and acting as a small harbour to dock their boats for the fishermen living nearby, Pantai Malindo is a low lying muddy coast, with two piers extending out to the sea. Wait till evening to see the sunset!

We then headed to Bee Ghah Kafe 美雅 next to Lexis Suites Penang, located Teluk Kumbar to have our dinner. We tried their prominent coffee butter, which coffee was prepared via an old-school method using a strainer, and was topped with a piece of butter. We also ordered toast bread which we could use to dip into the coffee for a better experience. The first sip of the coffee was wow! Coffee was thick, rich, and came with a strong aroma, combining with the melted butter that gives an oily, buttery-salty taste.

We bumped into Tian Zhuan Hokkien Mee (田传虾面) located at Taman Jermal Indah, next to Butterworth Outer Ring Road after our morning jog, which serves Hokkien Mee, alongside some side dishes such as braised mix plate to eat with, as well as noodle dishes such Loh Mee, and Kuey Teow. Fully air conditioned, spacious walkway, Tian Zhuan Hokkien Mee is a noodle house with modern looking interior which is clean and neat. We tried their Wet (Soup) Hokkien Mee, with side dish of Braised Mix Plate to accommodate our hungry stomach after a light jog that morning. The Hokkien Mee comes with several prawn pieces, half side of braised egg, fish cakes, and a bowl full of yellow - vermicelli noodles, and the portion was pretty decent. What really attracted us is their Hokkien Mee broth, where it is infused with deep flavours of prawn flesh, that brings an umami yet slightly spicy flavour! Moving on to side dish Mix Braised Plate, which is a must try for those pork intestine fans out there as it comes with two halves of braised egg, 5 chicken legs, and pieces of pork intestine that fills up the bowl! We kinda liked the soy sauce braised with it as it brings out the porky flavour from the pig intestines, that combines with the slightly salty yet sweet profile of the broth, making it worthy to try!
