If you are disgusted by the various other gross perfume ingredients out there, here’s a pleasant one. Roses contain hundreds of fragrance molecules with various olfactory characters. They contain a combination of rose oxide, which is metallic, geranyl acetate which is fruity-floral, citronellol, which is also present in lemongrass and nerol, and is again present in neroli and lemongrass. Phenyl acetate, which lends chocolate accords its sweetness, is also used in rose accords. What does this mean?

So many popular perfumes contain musk, but the origins of this scent will shock you. Musk is a reddish-brown secretion from the "musk pod" of the male musk deer. It is such a popular ingredient that it is even mentioned in Kabir’s poems. However, since its popularity encouraged the hunting of this endangered deer, its scent is now replicated synthetically.

When perfumer David Holtz spoke to the Cut about making a genuine lily fragrance, he talked about how his initial scent smelled like soap—flat and flowery—far from the actual smell of fresh lilies. That’s when he realised that live lily flowers have a note which smells like “ham or baloney.” Then he took notes of clove, that has the component eugenol which gives it a smoky character, and added them in. That’s how he got his lily scent, proving that animalic notes are necessary to add depth to generic florals.

When perfumers try to derive the scent of a flower, many of its aspects are lost once it’s dried and pressed into oils. So perfumers try to add those characteristics back by adding notes which make it smell more realistic. One weird way that’s done in the case of white florals, is by using Indole. Derived from coal tar, this smells like camphor and mothballs when pure, and gives a f***l scent to enhance the intensity and depth of jasmine perfumes in order to make these fragrances smell more like the real flower.

Known as ambergris, the excrement of s***m whales, which is rumoured to be a by-product of the whale trying to digest indigestible items, used to be very popular in perfumes. It has a sweet smell once it ages, which is why it is used in perfumes even now. But since it led to the hunting of s***m whales, it is now made synthetically.
