Hi, my name is Tommy, also known as TTao. I just started playing Destiny 2 with Shadowkeep. I think I’m an average player, I normally play strategy games and the occasional moba so Destiny 2 is my first real FPS. I was able to reach legend in season 8 and season 9 with a KD of around 1.20 and a 60% win rate. I had a fireteam for all of season 8, and most of season 9. In season 8 I did some legend carries in LFG groups towards the end of the season. In season 9 I soloed competitive from Glory 4700 to 5500 Glory.
Again, I'm an average player, so if I can reach Legend you can too. This guide is mainly for beginner PvP players and for people that have hit a plateau in their Glory Rank.
This guide will be broken into the following sections
Micro Skills
-Hitting your shots
-Movement
-Radar Awareness
Micro Skills
This section is about skills and things you do in the middle of a gun fight. Hitting your shots, moving into and around cover, radar awareness
Hitting your shots
As much as the other parts of the guide might help you, if you consistently miss your shots then it will be really hard to do well in high level comp.
My first recommendation is to adjust your sensitivity to make sure when you Aim Down Sights (ads) it goes where you think it goes. You can practice ads on any enemy, I recommend going to the tribute hall if you have some tributes unlocked.
The next thing to practice is to hit your crits while moving/strafing.
If you are moving, you are a harder target to hit
Then you want to practice slide shooting, then aerial shooting.
You can see it in action in the above video.
Movement
I die the most when I am caught out in the open without cover. So the question is how to I move between or into cover?
You can do a few things, 1, Walking 2, Sprinting 3, Jumping 4, Sliding
With 1 being the easiest to kill and 4 being the hardest to kill in my opinion.
The best way to practice this to slide into a small piece of cover and make sure you get your distance right
Small note: the Mobility stat will affect your walking, jumping, and sliding. It will not affect your sprint speed. Lightweight weapon frames will also affect your movement as well as the traction mod.
3 most common ways that I see guardians die (even at 5500)
1, Being caught out in the open/Die while sprinting
2, Overcommitting
3, Double peeking
Things to try in your next matches: Stay near cover, stay with teammates, jumping and sliding into cover, and not double peeking cover.
You can see it all in action in the following clip.
Radar Awareness
Your radar is your best friend. Know it's ranges, know how to estimate the location of enemy guardians, and how to abuse the radar of enemy guardians.
Radar Ranges are Off radar more than 47m, Outer ring 47m to 24m, Middle Ring 23m to 6m, Inner Ring less than 5m
When enemies are on the same level the radar indicator is dark, if they are on a different level it is lighter
When you crouch or slide you disappear for a brief moment on enemy radars
You can pinpoint enemy direction by rotating your radar.
Know your ideal engagement ranges and you can consistently win your fights.
