Mercedes-Benz will cross an SUV with a sedan
Daimler's development board member Markus Schaefer hinted at the emergence of a new class of cars just over a month ago, saying that the automotive world needs innovation, including new forms of cars. “Even there, after the SUV, the world is not over yet,” Schaefer explained ambiguously.
As Handelsblatt found out from its sources, under this phrase the top manager meant a new class of cars SUL (Sport Utility Limousine), a cross between a sedan and an SUV.
Presumably, the first SUL model will be a large executive sedan with SUV ground clearance, based on the 2018 Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury concept. This information has not been officially confirmed.
The show car was equipped with four electric motors with permanent magnets, allowing for four-wheel drive with a dynamically variable distribution of torque between each of the wheels, and a battery pack with a capacity of 80 kWh. The total power of the power plant was 738 hp. The promised power reserve is over 322 km. In just 5 minutes, the fast charging system made it possible to charge the show car battery for 97 kilometers. The prototype was 5260 mm long, 2110 mm wide, and 1764 mm high. Two years ago, the company announced that the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury concept would be used as the basis for the next-generation Mercedes-Maybach GLS large crossover. As it turned out, Mercedes-Benz plans to create a separate class for such a "long", which may interest those who still choose crossovers and SUVs.
