WIU releases layoff numbers for Macomb, QC campuses Details about the layoffs at Western Illinois University have been released.

A statement on WIU’s website says a total of 89 positions, 57 faculty and 32 staff, will be eliminated. The cuts affect a variety of departments and roles. Other reductions taken by the college include:

Non-renewal of 35 Unit B faculty contracts, effective July 1

A hiring suspension and spending freeze, implemented on June 3

Over 100 vacant positions eliminated from future budgets, including two vice president positions

Iowa City man charged in fake ID enterprise given deferred judgement Hunter

An Iowa City man charged with providing false driver’s licenses to underage individuals was given a deferred judgement.
According to the criminal complaint, US Customs and Border Protection inspected and seized three internationally-shipped parcels on June 6th. One of the parcels was addressed to 20-year-old Aden Clark of Clark Street and reportedly contained a total of six false driver’s licenses concealed within two small mirrors. The licenses were allegedly made for three different individuals with two false licenses for each. Davenport gets $51.4M for water treatment The Davenport Regional Water Pollution Control Plant is getting funding to protect water sources.

The City of Davenport has slated $51.4 million in upgrades to the plant for its digester, belt press and other critical capital projects. The funding will help pay to replace aging equipment to keep water more sanitary. Once treated, water can be safely returned to the river for reuse downstream.

Partisan opinions about special counsel’s revised indictment against Donald Trump A federal grand jury handed up a new indictment against Donald Trump for election interference. The indictment filed by Special Counsel Jack Smith supersedes the previous indictment in the case and takes into account the recent Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity.

Iowa Utilities Commission issues pipeline permit for Summit Carbon Solutions DES MOINES, (Iowa Capital Dispatch) -- The Iowa Utilities Commission has issued a construction permit for Summit Carbon Solutions’ proposed hazardous liquid pipeline across Iowa, the Iowa Capital Dispatch reports.

The commission’s decision on Wednesday was not unexpected given a June 25 order in which the panel issued a final decision approving the project while requiring Summit Carbon to submit numerous filings demonstrating compliance with regulatory requirements before a construction permit would be issued.

Sioux City man found guilty of first-degree murder SIOUX CITY, (Iowa Media Wire) -- A Sioux City man has been found guilty of first-degree murder.

Mario Alberto Corona Ruiz was found guilty of first-degree murder on Thursday in the Woodbury County Courthouse.

Corona Ruiz was on trial after he shot and killed Michael Schwebach on W. 19th Street in September of 2023.

County Jail detainee charged with assault on cellmate Hunter

A Coralville man being held in the Johnson County Jail on a parole violation has been additionally charged after allegedly assaulting a cellmate.
Just after 7pm Monday, deputies were alerted to yelling in an overnight holding cell. The victim stated that he was assaulted by 30-year-old Michael Vogel of Holiday Road, who had been booked into the jail earlier in the afternoon.
A review of closed-circuit surveillance video reportedly showed Vogel walking over to the victim, who was sitting on the ground. Council discusses tool share lending program Piggybacking off of a suggestion that Judge Sharon Greer, the wife of Mayor Joel Greer, made during the public comment period at the July 22 meeting, the Marshalltown city council discussed creating a tool share lending program for citizens who need them to tidy up their properties on Monday night.
Councilor Melisa Fonseca explained that Greer had offered to donate tools herself as a way to kickstart the initiative, and she added that they are all hand tools that don’t run on gas or electricity.
