Ye**ty Brews Artisanal Beers will release a collaboration beer with Beer Babes Family today at 1 p.m.

Beer Babes Family is now a charitable organization in both the U.S. and Canada. Broward Beer caught up with Rachel Benkowski, one of the nonprofit’s co-founders.

"We saw that there was nothing for women that are already in the business. They're trying to improve their business or start a business," Benkowski says. "If you're a woman in the industry and need a new walk-in cooler, want new faucets, you want to add a fermenter you know, whatever you need to help improve your business. You can apply for our business grant."

You can meet Benkowski and the rest of Beer Babes Family at Ye**ty Brews today. Can't make it? You can donate to the organization by a link in the story.

Rachel Benkowski will be at Ye**ty Brews for her nonprofit’s latest beer release.

Are you scared Bud Light may turn you gay? There’s a new beer for you.

“Conservative Dad’s Ultra Right” looks like it tastes just as bad as its competitor with even worse taste in branding.

Brought to you by a guy who helped Trump’s Georgia campaign in 2016 – this beer brand's creator promises to never “go woke.”

"As conservatives, we're constantly getting hit in the face left and right by the 'woke mind virus.' The last place we want it is in our beer," Seth Weathers says in a promotional video on Twitter. "If you know which bathroom to use, you know which beer you should be drinking. Stop giving money to 'woke corporations' that hate our values."

To protect those values, you can pay twice the price of one sh*tty beer company for another. But at least this one is proudly scared of transgender people.

"Ultra Right" is only available for online preorders right now. Weathers launched the now-viral video yesterday and claims to have already received "thousands of orders."

Here's why those customers are pathetic...

I have a tour I like to give friends and family visiting from out of town: We start at Orchestrated Minds Brewing, Uber to Invasive Species, walk to Laser Wolf, then to Glitch Bar to end the night.

It showcases all of my favorite breweries and bars. We could simply call it after tacos from Laser Wolf. But Glitch Bar is the best way to leave my guests with a lasting memory.

I’ve tried to put my finger on what I love so much about the place.

I have a tour I like to give friends and family visiting from out of town: We start at Orchestrated Minds Brewing, Uber to Invasive Species, walk to Laser Wolf, then to .ftl to end the night.

It showcases all of my favorite breweries and bars. We could simply call it after tacos from Laser Wolf. But Glitch Bar is the best way to leave my guests with a lasting memory.

I’ve tried to put my finger on what I love so much about the place…

• Is it the nostalgia of a club decked out in ‘80s and ‘90s pop culture references?

• The unique beer selection?

• The perfect lighting that transports guests to another time period?

I’d like to say it’s simply all of the above.

How do those things all come together in balance and harmony?

I’ve gone to other arcade bars locally and while traveling. There’s something unique about Glitch Bar.

My friend and founder of the South Florida geek culture blog , Gillian Manning, and I recently sat down with the owner of Glitch Bar to learn what gives it such a unique personality.

Local South Florida beer really starts in Miami.

The end of prohibition in the early 1930’s birthed some of the first breweries down here.

None of them lasted, and were all defunct within a few years.

That risk-taking, entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Miami’s beer scene today.

Thank you, Aventura Magazine , for letting me write about the breweries I feel define Miami.

Back in October, I got an offer to write about the best breweries in the South Florida beer scene for two different Palm Beach Media Group magazines.

This story in Fort Lauderdale Illustrated is the first. I’m really happy with the way it came out.

The editor gave me free rein to cover the breweries that I feel define South Florida craft beer.

My focus was locally-owned. Each brewery makes a unique product and has a vibrant taproom without financial backing from Anheuser-Busch or Heineken.

It’s a free event focused on literature. There will be writing workshops, poetry readings, a literary costume contest, and panels like ours hosted by local authors.

Gillian co-organized and “Hero Beer” with me. She created all of the social media flyers for both events, and many here on Broward Beer.

Last summer, Gillian launched Geek’s Gazette as a blog focused on the South Florida cosplay community and all things geek culture.

She’s taught me a lot about design and blogging.

I’m happy and proud for the opportunity to lead a panel with Gillian about blogging and journalism with other local authors.

16/02/2023

CORRECTION:

“Lager Me, Bro” American lager will remain the official beer of Miami Beer Week. The new sour ale will serve as the kick-off beer for the week. It will be ready in two weeks.

Tonight, roughly 30 South Florida beer industry peers gathered at Unbranded Brewing Co.to kick start the second annual Miami Beer Week

Unbranded Brewing will host the pregame event and make the signature beer this year.

The Hialeah brewery will make a cream soda style sour ale, sans lactose, instead of last year’s American lager.

Miami Beer Week founders Adrian Castro and Will Rivera asked the crowd of sales reps and bar/brewery owners to push beer sales in neighboring counties.

“Let’s do this together as a community,” Rivera said. “Don’t keep it just to Miami. Let’s get it out there to the Laser Wolf bars of the world.”

Rivera took a moment to thank the owners of Tripping Animals Brewing Co. for funding last year’s beer week and brewing the original American lager.

Events and dates haven’t been finalized but will take place mid-April. Follow back for updates.

Thank you to everyone who came out in support last night.

The “Beer for Heroes” release party at 26 Degree Brewing Company was a huge success.

Huge thank you to the Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, Broward County Commissioner Mike Udine, and our friends from Parkland Cares for making the night so special.

I’d also like to thank all the amazing people who spoke at the event yesterday…

• Mayor of Pompano Rex Hardin

• Vice Mayor of Coral Springs Shawn Cerra

• Chamber of Commerce Representatives Chad Brocato and Greg Harrison

• Lieutenant Ivo Defranceschi

• Firefighters Kyle Kurth Jay Lester — not only for joining us last night but for saving the life of someone I’m proud to call a friend.

People are often too proud to seek help for their mental health.

Parkland Cares is here for anyone who needs to talk with a mental health professional.

The nonprofit will fund personalized mental health counseling for any first responder who wants and needs it.

Last weekend, I finally got around to opening my Savage Lyfe Beer Co Crown + Rose Society starter kit. It’s taken me a while to get around to shooting and editing a proper unboxing video that I’m happy with. But here it is.

This is the first brewery membership I’ve ever joined. It’s $450 total, which isn’t cheap for me but I bought in for a few reasons:

º I can get in from the ground up.

º I was able to make three payments, instead of paying one lump sum.

º I have a huge appreciation for the founders of this brewery that matters more than just beer.

In this video, I break down everything offered in the initial starter kit box. This is just the beginning, and there are still seven wood-aged bottle releases to look forward to. Over time, I’d like to document every future beer release and event.

I’ve officially made two out of three payments – so we’re almost officially about that

🚨 On NBC 6 today: The Hero Beer story 🚨

At 12:40 this afternoon, Jen Herrara will interview co-owner Yonathan Ghersi in the studio. The topic: How Ghersi had a stroke in his brewery and almost died – until paramedics rushed him to the hospital in less than seven minutes, where he received life-saving treatment.

Now Ghersi is repaying their efforts the best way he knows how: By brewing a beer for them.

On Saturday, Feb. 4, from 2-6 pm, 26 Degree is hosting a release party for Hero Beer, which raises money for first responder mental health counseling.

“Saving lives takes an emotional toll on these heroes,” Ghersi says. “All the proceeds from hero Beer go to Parkland Cares, which has been funding trauma counseling for years. Now we get to help save the people who save us.”

26 Degree is at 2600 East Atlantic Avenue in Pompano Beach.

Yonathan Ghersi can tell you exactly where he was at 2:28 pm on July 28 – because he couldn't tell anyone else. He literally couldn't speak.

As he walked through his craft brewery in Pompano Beach, he lost all sensation in the right side of his body. Then he went blind.

An employee asked if he was OK, and he uttered the last words for the rest of the day: "I'm not sure."

Ghersi was having a stroke. In a matter of six ½ minutes, local paramedics rushed him to the hospital for emergency surgery.

“That's the only reason I'm still here able to talk to you guys,” Ghersi tells Broward Beer. “Had it taken, let's say 10 more minutes to get to the hospital, a lot more damage would’ve been done to my brain from lack of oxygen.”

The brewery staff dialed 911 while guiding him by the hand to a couch in the brewery’s taproom. Paramedics arrived within minutes.

He’s found a unique way to give back to those who saved his life by doing what he knows best: making beer.

He and his brewery partnered with Parkland Cares, a local nonprofit that provides mental health counseling for those in need.

On Saturday, Feb. 4, from 2 to 6 pm, and will host a fundraiser for first responder mental health counseling.

This Saturday, Ye**ty Brews Artisanal Beers is throwing its second-annual anniversary beer festival.

For $45, you can drink all you want from 2 to 6 p.m. For $70, you can get a VIP ticket that includes a 22 oz. bottle of their anniversary stout, and a full pint from the taproom.

There are going to be 15 breweries and homebrewers pouring beer from all over Florida. Last year was the least pretentious and laid-back fest I’ve ever gone to.

Co-owner and head brewer Daniel Pfaffenbach tells me the brewery keeps the focus on the customers first.

"It's not just the 'beer sommeliers' that are looking for the biggest and baddest beers. It's people that want to come and hang out together and just enjoy themselves," Pfaffenbach says. “We have a great crowd of regulars coming in. This party is our thank you to them.”

Black Friday 2020, this blog was in its infancy and I wrote something about that infuriated online beer nerds.

A bartender from a different local brewery DMed me with what they called a "big story” — 3 Sons’ “Broward County Brand Stout” was a rip off of another brewery. They said that the Dania Beach brewery ripped off Goose Island, an Anheuser-Busch company, which had a beer called "Bourbon County Brand Stout."

I have no shame admitting that at the time, I didn’t know much about either annual release, both of which have new incarnations today. But I did – and still do – believe that person had a point.

So I wrote it under the headline “Where Have I Seen This Beer Before?”

Like a rookie, I didn't do much reporting. And like a dummy, I interviewed an intellectual property attorney who focused on craft beer, but I didn't do that until three days after the story was posted.

I met Taylor C. Foss when I read his blog post about a beer called "Guns ‘N’ Rosé" from Oskar Blues. I figured he'd be the perfect person to talk to about this, and then I found out I had less of a case than Guns n' Roses.

"The question becomes whether or not someone walking down the aisle in a store and sees 'Bourbon County Brand Stout' and then right next to it sees 'Broward County Brand Stout,' are they gonna think those are the same brands? Probably not. The name is different," Foss tells me. "The fact that 3 Sons is maybe 'winking' at a more famous competitor isn't necessarily a trademark violation if there's no confusion on the part of the consumer."

Here’s how an idiot like me dumbs down what a smart lawyer has to say.

The cliff notes:

• Is it “illegal”? Not really.

• Can Anheuser-Busch sue? Sure.

• Will they? Probably not.

🍊FLORIDA STRONG🍊

I had the pleasure of brewing a collaborative beer to raise money for Hurricane Ian relief in SWFL. 100% of the profits from the beer are going to a charitable organization that is working in the affected areas. For the first one we chose in Ft Myers, they’re doing great work over there!

This is going to be an open collab, any brewery is welcome to jump in on it by going to floridastrong.beer and downloading the recipe and label.

This first batch was brewed at my day job, and we invited a bunch of our friends to join us!

From SWFL we had the following breweries join us:

We also had a ton of help from the Dade/Broward fam! It was a great collab and I feel fortunate to be able to help raise money for a great cause!

Last Wednesday, I saw The Early November share a beer on Facebook and immediately went through all the FOMO feelings.

The label is inspired by the band’s first EP “For All of This” which was released two decades ago. I was a huge fan of it back then and I’m a huge fan of it now.

The Early November is from Jersey and so are the two breweries (Departed Soles Brewing Co. X Vinyl Brewing) who collaborated on this project with them.

Other bands I love like The Menzingers and He Is Legend have released beers with breweries in other states and I’ve just missed out. I was able to ship this one here in South Florida through Half Time

I paid about $20 to ship a 12-pack of IPAs but don’t even care. People spend money on hookers and blow. I Iike beer and emo bands – judge me.

Now that the beer is here, I’m going through all the nostalgia feelings.

Here’s my little trip down memory lane, thinking back on a band that inspired much of my life before I could legally drink.

Two New Jersey breweries partnered with one of my favorite childhood bands and it’s got me feeling all of the nostalgia.
