In a polarizing world, many people simply try to get by existing within a crowd, not daring to step out of line or stray from the status quo. Always acting above the safety net of conformity. However, A person cannot freely express their creative nature when they are chained to the status quo. Regardless of whether fashion is or is not at the forefront of your mind, it is an essential part of society so subsequently everyone develops their own sense of personal style. Former creative director at Barney’s, Simon Doonan, best expresses this notion as he states, “Conformity is the real fashion crime. To not dress like yourself and to sublimate your spirit to some kind of group identity is succumbing to Fashion Fascism.” Once a person breaks free from the hive mind of societal norms, they can think in new and creative ways and freely express their innermost self. Many prominent styles such as punk, grunge, and camp (to name a few) were developed from different subcultures that couldn’t stand the thought of conforming to normative styles and ideologies and felt their true identity lied out of line with what society viewed as acceptable.

Happy Thanksgiving from Lewk Magazine! This year we want to give thanks to our members and show them our gratitude for working hard on Issue No. 5. Lewk is a big part of our lives. The long, tedious hours at photoshoots, multiple meetings a day, running from one event to the next. It all comes down to this. At the end of it all, we have each other. We are given the opportunity to create something amazing with people who are generous enough to believe in it just as much, if not more, than us. Every piece of the puzzle matters, and we want everyone to know their hard work does not go unnoticed. Thank you to everyone that had a hand in this issue! We hope everyone is enjoying their Thanksgiving and remembering to be grateful. 🤍🦃

The Solitary Horse

The melody winds up again like a child's music box. Smiling faces and swaying bodies are crowded together. Their eyes are glossy and excited. Some of them hold hands. Some of them share whispers. I recognize the voices and the huddled groups. Some of them do this over and over. They don’t recognize me though. I am like a ghost. I am like an island surrounded by restless waters. I am just another body, alone.
The spinning starts and the faces begin to blur. The rotation goes faster and faster. A slight breeze humming through me. I feel something sticky and poisonous splash against my turning body. I can’t stop though. I am tethered here, you see. To the floor, and the spinning, and the swaying, grouped crowds. People touch me, but I cannot feel it. I am isolated, you see, in the eye of a storm. I wish it would all stop, but it won’t. It can’t. Carousel horses can feel lonely too.

Prayer to Plastered

“On my knees
With my hands
Now flailing wings
Clasped in prayer
I beg for severance from
Family fighting,
To be fully fledged
Hand-delivered
My savior
If there
Gifted me the hum of electricity
Ringing in my ears as I gaze
Mouth agape and stoney eyed
At the TV
Muted
The static sizzle lulling me to sleep
Then a cacophony
Making my ear drums bleed
As I stifle the sting
Hand to mouth
In a plastered gown
With my new fair-weather friends
Laughing muffled beyond my quartz cubicle
Beside me
All of us
Oblivious”

Seeking professional help and support is crucial for addressing these challenges. If you or someone you know is struggling with young adult alcoholism, there are several resources available to help, including:
Texas State University Counseling Center : The counseling center provides support for students seeking services like crisis response, brief counseling, prevention activities and educational workshops/webinars. They can be reached through their email [email protected] and by their phone number (512)-245-2208.
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) : Meetings are held both in-person and online. The Wimberly Group’s 24-hour hotline is (512)-444-0071. The same hotline can be used to reach The River Group as well.
You’re never alone in this, and your brighter days await.

Every Hispanic comes to question their faith. It seems to be the only unifying aspect of our community. We grow up in church and cling to the cross or venture on an exodus all our own. We come in many shades, hair colors and textures, but religion is not to be trifled with. Shortly after we are welcomed into this waking world, we are dunked in frigid waters to cleanse the sin of existence from our fresh-smelling skin. How we came to love the Virgin Mary is a mystery, but the world cannot complain, for we put a woman on the same pedestal as a man far before others did, ahead of our time. Perhaps the ancestors saw her holiness in our mothers, our grandmothers, and they passed it onto us, a lineage of light. Whether we come from the earth or across the ocean, our blood ties us together, a red ribbon clasping our hands in a special sacred prayer.

Our very presence uttering, “Que dios te bendiga.”

Nuestra mera presencia diciendo, "Que Dios te bendiga."

ere is a LEWK at your new Issue 5: Oblivion Editorial Management Team.

“Our perception can be difficult to grasp at times. In a world where you can clip any video or edit any image, you can never uncover the whole truth. Social Media has gained an extreme impact on the way we view ourselves which has made many feel lost. At the end of the day you can not control the perception society has of you,but you can control the narrative that you portray. This issue is for all the people that feel watched, individuals that feel alone, and for all the times the perception of yourself did not align with who you are. “ - Alanna Solis (Social Media Director)

Here is a LEWK at your new Issue 5: Oblivion Editorial Management Team.

“ Sometimes when I dissociate from this world I feel the most free to create. Through the struggle there is triumph. There is empowerment in blazing your own path. For a long time I have felt like the black sheep. I have felt invisible and unrecognizable to the point of no return. In my work I have found my artistry. There is an eerie feeling that comes with showcasing your art, but there is also beauty in the vulnerability.” - Destiney Kennerson (Head of Styling and Design)

INTRODUCING ISSUE NO. 4!

This issue felt like a love letter to growing up as a young adult in college. It was so much fun to make, and
we really wanted to showcase the openness and freedom of what that transition from being a child to becoming an adult could look like while away at college.
It can be absurd, abrupt, dreamy, dark, and overall a colorful experience. It was important to emphasize
color and emotion throughout this issue. We explored the good, bad, and ugly truths of young adulthood and how college can be a navigator for finding who you are. Many find themselves, and many lose themselves. But throughout the madness of life, you form an identity.
In a way, this issue has also been a big step in furthering the definition of who we are as an
organization. Like anyone else going through these years, we pushed the limit, experimented with our style, and came out this semester knowing more than before. For some of us, this is the last issue we’ll have a hand in, and we couldn’t be more proud of how it turned out.We hope you enjoy!!

Lewk Magazine for Int’l Women’s Day 💗

Socialization, defined as the process of learning to behave in a way that is acceptable to society. In this day and age, women have challenged the way we should be seen. Why be a housewife when I can become an astronaut? Why are we compared to one another when we can lift each other up? Women are beautiful inside and out. We are connected with our emotions, we feel so much enabling us to reach out with our motherly instincts to help others through struggles. It’s down a rugged road women have come, but the evolution of how we have fought to be seen as equal makes it all the better. Women give life, go through nine months of physical and emotional change. The admiration of women should run deep through our souls. To end off, here is a poem from “I hope this finds you well” by Kate Baer.

“In this shoot full of people new to me, I felt warm. The sort of warmth I feel when a black stranger calls me "brother." It wasn't difficult to queue that up and turn it into a photo. I hope viewers of this image set get that unique sense of immediate community.
There's something really niche about our ability to find kinship in people who look like us - solely because they look like us. You feel safe and it's like you never left home.” - Niles Davis

The black experience is prevalent in our everyday lives as a black person in society. Black history month is a vessel for us to use our voices to amplify the work and the beauty of the black experience. I encourage my fellow brothers and sisters to let their voices be heard this month. Take up space! Take up all the space! Don’t just take up space this month, but let this month be the launch pad to the future of your voices being heard year round.

DESIGNER OF THE WEEK:

GiGi Hunter is an American designer known for her chic, handmade crochet work. GiGi grew up as a dancer and was featured in many hit shows and movies growing up. Her passion for knitting started when she was only eight after she was taught by her older sister. Success followed her in the ’90s and early 2000s because her designs were loved and styled by many iconic females such as Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, and even Zendaya.

You can purchase through her Instagram platform via direct messages. She is currently accepting orders for May 2023 because of her slow fashion-oriented business.
GiGi inspires so many young, creative souls who share the same passions as her even today.

29/09/2022

The month of September marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM). In 1988, former President Ronald Reagan signed a bill turning the entire month of September into HHM.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated in the whole state. Texas has one of the biggest hispanic populations in the United States; 83% of Texans are hispanic, ranking it number 2 in total hispanic population.

In 2011, Texas State University became a Hispanic-Serving Institution. Texas State has more than 15,000 hispanic students, making up almost 40% of the enrollment.

Hispanic Heritage month is meant to honor and appreciate our Hispanic community that has built communities and cities around their culture.

Lexi Chazez, lead makeup artist for Lewk Magazine, embraces her hispanic culture in her everyday life by educating her friends and embracing her culture through the way she dresses and her makeup. Ways to celebrate this time of the month are learning more about the Hispanic culture by going and seeing mariachi bands and folklorico dancers perform, going to local markets and supporting small hispanic businesses, and going to museums to learn more about not only hispanic artists but also hispanic history.

It is important for us to celebrate and learn more about different cultures, so we can all become more cultural aware of others around us.

“I think the most beautiful thing you can do is to share and embrace each other’s cultures and to educate others,” said Chavez.

By doing this we are able to celebrate and recognize our differences as well as our similarities. Lexi also reminds us how important it is to embrace our cultures, the “beautiful culture [we] were born into.”
