TANZANIAN PRESIDENT, JOHN MAGUFULI IS DEAD.

Tanzania’s President John Magufuli has died, Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan said on Wednesday.

Magufuli was 61. He was Tanzania’s first president to die while in office.

His death was announced after more than two-week absence from public life, that led to speculation about his health.

The opposition said he was struck with COVID-19, but VP Hassan said he died from the heart disease that had plagued him for a decade.

She said burial arrangements were under way and announced 14 days of mourning and the flying of flags at half staff.

State television broadcast mournful and religious songs.

Samia Suluhu Hassan: to succeed Magufuli
Magufuli, had not been seen in public since Feb. 27, sparking rumours that he had contracted COVID-19.

Officials denied on March 12 that he had fallen ill.

“Dear Tanzanians, it is sad to announce that today 17 March 2021 around 6 p.m. we lost our brave leader, President John Magufuli who died from heart disease at Mzena hospital in Dar es Salaam where he was getting treatment,” the vice president said on state broadcaster TBC.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said on Friday that he had spoken to Magufuli, and blamed the narrative of the president’s ailment on some “hateful” Tanzanians living abroad.

Tundu Lissu, Magufuli’s main rival in the October election when the president won a second five-year term, had suggested Tanzania’s leader had been flown to Kenya for treatment for COVID-19 and then moved to India in a coma.

After the death was announced, opposition leader Zitto Kabwe said he had spoken to Vice President Hassan to offer condolences for Magufuli’s death.

“The nation will remember him for his contribution to the development of our country,” Kabwe said in a statement published on Twitter.

VP Hassan becomes President

According to Tanzania’s Constitution, Vice President Hassan, 61, should assume the presidency for the remainder of the five-year term that Magufuli began serving last year after winning a second term.

She would be the East African nation’s first female president.

Born in the semi-autonomous archipelago of Zanzibar, Hassan studied economics in Britain, worked for the U.N.’s World Food Programme and then held various government posts prior to becoming Tanzania’s first female vice president in 2015.

Hassan said Magufuli was admitted on March 6 to Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute for heart problems and discharged the next day.

A week later he felt bad and was rushed to Mzena hospital where he was getting treatment under supervision of doctors from the cardiac institute.

‘THE BULLDOZER’

Nicknamed “The Bulldozer” because of his reputation for pushing through policies despite opposition, Magufuli frustrated the World Health Organization (WHO) during the pandemic by playing down the threat from COVID-19, saying God and remedies such as steam inhalation would protect Tanzanians.

The former chemistry teacher had mocked coronavirus tests, denounced vaccines as part of a Western conspiracy to take Africa’s wealth, and opposed mask-wearing and social distancing.

Tanzania stopped reporting coronavirus data in May last year when it had reported 509 cases and 21 deaths, according to the WHO, which has urged the government to be more transparent.

He was re-elected for a second term in 2020, winning 84% of the vote in an election the opposition said was marred by irregularities and whose results it rejected.

BENUE COURT SENTENCES SEVEN COUSINS TO DEATH BY HANGING.

Seven cousins, Peter, Elias, Chibueze, Emmanuel, Simon, Patrick and Godwin all of Ebere family in Enyikpo Ulayi village in Ado Local Government Area of Benue state have been sentenced to death by hanging by an Otukpo High Court.

The septet were yesterday convicted by Justice Wilfred Kpochi for criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide punishable with death.

At the hearing, the court was told how the convicts conspired and agreed among themselves to kill their brother, one Vincent Ebere with Cutlasses and sticks with which they bruised and matcheted him on the head on December 25, 2012 which led to his death.

Delivery his judgement, Justice kpochi turned down the plea of allocatus by the defendants insisting that it was of no effect hence the punishment for the heinous crime was mandatory.

He held that the prosecution had proved his case beyond all reasonable doubts and accordingly sentenced all the accused to death by hanging.

Speaking shortly after the judgement, the prosecuting Chief State Counsel, Mr. Ada Ocholi who lauded the judgement said it would serve as deterrent to others since nobody was permitted to take the laws into his hands.

They expressed happiness that justice had been served in the matter.

OGUN ASSEMBLY STOLEN MACE RECOVERED BY LAGOS POLICE

The mace of Ogun State House of Assembly has been recovered by members of the police force in Lagos.

The mace was recovered at Abule-Oshun, along Badagry, Friday afternoon.

The mace, according to report, is being taken to the office of the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu.

Vanguard gathered that men of the underworld broke into the speaker, Olakunle Oluomo’s office overnight and stole the official symbol of the legislature.

It was gathered that this is the second time hoodlums the Assembly complex has been bulged in the last three weeks.

When our correspondent visited the Assembly located metres away from the Governor’s Office, in the precinct of the State Secretariat, Oke- Mosan, Abeokuta, some security agents denied access into the complex, saying it was order from above.

Speaking with our correspondent, an officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) said “We don’t want to see journalists here today. We are not entertaining visitors today.”

It was gathered that the State Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun had earlier visited the Assembly for on the spot assessment.

When contacted, the Spokesman of the Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident, saying the head of the mace has been recovered, while investigation into the burglary and theft has commenced.

“There is an unfortunate incident today in the Assembly complex. The hoodlums broke into the Assembly through the ceiling, and removed the official mace of the house. That is why the Commissioner of Police had to go there for on the spot assessment,” he said.

But, the spokesman of the Assembly, Hon. Yusuf Adejojo denied that the mace was stolen, saying the mace was in a safe place in the Assembly.

“To the best of my knowledge, the last sitting that we had was last Thursday which I’m sure everybody was aware and witnessed the presence of the mace.

BANDITS DISPLACE 100,000 IN THREE ZAMFARA VILLAGES.

OVER 100,000 people have been displaced in Anka, Shinkafi and Zurmi in Zamfara State following an upsurge in violence since 2018, an independent international humanitarian organisation, Médecins Sans Frontières, popularly called Doctors without Borders, has said.

The MSF which has been working in Nigeria since 1996 is currently working in seven states across Nigeria: Borno, Jigawa, Zamfara, Sokoto, Benue, Ebonyi and Rivers.

While expressing concern over what it described as “killings, looting and abduction in Zamfara State”, the MSF said between January and October 2020, its teams had treated a total of 20,260 children for malnutrition in Anka, Shinkafi, Zurmi and Gusau.

The Field Communications Manager of MSF for Borno, Nigeria, Stefan Pejovic, gave this figure in a statement entitled: ‘Nigeria: Killings, looting and abductions in Zamfara State’, obtained by The PUNCH in Abuja on Thursday.

According to him, many people including Fatima (surname withheld) left their villages after 56 people were killed by bandits in one day.

The statement quoted Fatima as saying that about 30 people from their village had already been killed and their belongings constantly being looted.

ASUU DENIES SUSPENDING ONGOING STRIKE

The Academic Staff Union of Universities said it has not suspended its ongoing nine-month-old strike.

Dr. Lazarus Maigoro, Chairman of the University of Jos Chapter of ASUU disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Jos.

According to him, the union has not signed any agreement with the Federal Government to call off the strike as being purported in some quarters.

He said that the Federal Government had promised to fulfill part of the agreement that led to the lingering strike, but had failed to do so to date.

“It must be categorically stated here that ASUU never signed any agreement to suspend the strike but agreed on timelines for government to implement certain aspects of the issues in contention.

“For instance, one of the issues agreed was that all the six to nine months withheld salaries and check-off dues of ASUU members will be released by Dec. 9, but the date has passed and nothing was done.

“The N40 billion earned academic allowances and N30 billion funding for revitalisation will also be released by Dec. 11, among other issues, but till now, none has been fulfilled.

“The next thing is that we heard Dr Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, telling the public that ASUU agreed to suspend the strike,” he said.

Maigoro said the minister was quoted in some sections of the media that the government has fulfilled its part of the agreement reached to enable the union to call off the industrial action.

“He was quoted to have said the government had fulfilled its part of the gentleman agreement it entered with ASUU on Nov. 27.

“He was also quoted to have claimed that payment of the public university lecturers’ salaries being withheld would require presidential clearance due to the prevailing “No work, no pay” rule.

“It is important for Nigerians to note that salaries of lecturers of federal universities, who refused to enroll in the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) were stopped in February before they went on strike in March.

“It should, however, be noted too that IPPIS and salary stoppage were not among the demands of ASUU but was introduced by the government as a distraction,” he noted.

He called on relevant stakeholders, parents, and even students to join ASUU in its bid to ensure a better university and education system in the country, rather than see lecturers as bad eggs.

Maigoro called on the government to show a high level of sincerity in negotiating with ASUU, insisting that using threats would further aggravate the issue.

US ADDS NIGERIA TO TOP OF RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION LIST, REMOVES SUDAN AND UZBEKISTAN.

The State Department has revised its Countries of Particular Concern on religious freedom.

Only one country was added this year to the US government’s official list of the world’s worst persecutors of religion: Nigeria.

The West African nation – Africa’s most populous and divided roughly evenly between Christians and Muslims – has been plagued for years by rising sectarian tensions and the Islamist terror group Boko Haram, which most recently was blamed for a massacre of scores of farmers in Borno State.

Nigeria joins Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan on the US Department of State’s Countries of Particular Concern (CPC) list, which names and shames governments which have “engaged in or tolerated ‘systematic, ongoing, [and] egregious violations of religious freedom.’” Those nine nations were also on the 2018 and 2019 CPC lists.

“Today, the United States, a nation founded by those fleeing religious persecution … once again took action to defend those who simply want to exercise this essential freedom,” stated Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

“… And yet our work is far from complete.”

Last year, Nigeria was added to the State Department’s Special Watch List (SWL), a secondary tier below the CPC list for governments that have “engaged in or tolerated ‘severe violations of religious freedom.’”

The 2020 watch list includes Comoros, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Russia, as it did in 2019. Cuba and Nicaragua were added to the list that year, while Russia was added in 2018.

The elevating of Nigeria to the highest level of concern was praised by religious freedom advocates.

“I am sad it came to this but it’s time for Nigeria to change its behavior; it must protect its citizens,” tweeted Johnnie Moore, a member of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) who visited Nigeria last year and wrote a book on his findings. “Nigeria now has the unfortunate distinction of being the first democracy ever added to the … infamous list of the worst religious freedom violators in the world.”

USCIRF has advised the State Department to add Nigeria to the CPC list since 2009.

“We especially welcome the increased level of accountability that will result,” Trent Martin, a Wilberforce21 fellow, told CT.

“Throughout the country, the people of Nigeria face a rising tide of violence that has left places of worship burned to the ground, families torn apart, and girls still held captive by terrorists,” he said. “We will continue to speak up for these people and encourage the American government to use this designation as a means to advocate for needed action in Nigeria.”

The State Department also shared two “positive developments” on international religious freedom.

Sudan and Uzbekistan have been removed from its Special Watch List “based on significant, concrete progress undertaken by their respective governments over the past year,” stated Pompeo. “Their courageous reforms of their laws and practices stand as models for other nations to follow.”

Both had been listed as CPCs as recently as 2019 and 2018, respectively. USCIRF recommended earlier this year that both nations remain on the watch list; however, vice chair Tony Perkins stated today that its commissioners find it “undeniable the historic progress that has been made in these two countries” and “hope that their progress encourages positive change in other places.” [CT has reported on the religious freedom progress in both Sudan and Uzbekistan.]

“[Their] delisting is good news for religious freedom,” Knox Thames, former special advisor for religious minorities at the State Department, told CT.

“Both countries have undertaken real reforms that have improved the situation on the ground for religious minorities, as well as the country as a whole,” said Thames, currently a senior fellow with the Institute for Global Engagement which has long focused on Uzbekistan. “In both, we have seen oppressive laws and policies changed, and people freed from prison. Churches are freer to meet than at any time in recent memory.”

21Wilberforce also praised the removals. "Years of courageous leadership in those countries coupled with international engagement with civil society, religious freedom roundtables, and other governments has fueled promising progress for religious freedom in both nations,” said Martin.

“The State Department’s failure to add India to the Special Watch List was disappointing and a glaring omission,” he said. “The trend lines continue to point downward, with anti-conversion laws and attacks on churches of growing concern to India’s large Christian community.

“Other minorities are targeted, as government policies could force millions of Indian Muslims into statelessness, Muslims are lynched for selling beef, and India’s largest state Uttar Pradesh recently established criminal penalties for interfaith marriages,” said Thames. “If the United States had added India to the watch list, it could have encouraged a much-needed course correction back towards India’s founding ideals of tolerance and minority rights.”

USCIRF recommended in its 2020 report that India be added to the higher CPC list, along with Russia, Syria, and Vietnam.

For the secondary watch list, USCIRF recommended the addition of Afghanistan, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Central African Republic, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and Turkey (in addition to Cuba, Sudan, and Uzbekistan).

Finally, today the State Department designated “al-Shabaab, al-Qa’ida, Boko Haram, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the Houthis, ISIS, ISIS-Greater Sahara, ISIS-West Africa, Jamaat Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin, and the Taliban” as Entities of Particular Concern (EPC), a relatively new category for non-state actors.

Two groups, “al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula and ISIS-Khorasan,” were removed from the EPC list “due to the total loss of territory formerly controlled by these terrorist organizations,” stated Pompeo.

“While these two groups no longer meet the statutory criteria for designation, we will not rest until we have fully eliminated the threat of religious freedom abuses by any violent extremist and terrorist groups,” he stated.

The State Department is required to produce the CPC list every year by the International Religious Freedom Act, which was passed in 1998 and strengthened in 2016.

In the most recent attack to make international headlines, suspected members of Boko Haram killed scores of rice farmers and fishermen last month as they were harvesting crops in Nigeria’s northern state of Borno, officials said. The UN humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon, later stated that 110 people had died, according to multiple media outlets.

The November 28 attack in a rice field in Garin Kwashebe came on the same day that residents were casting votes for the first time in 13 years to elect local councils, although many didn’t go to cast their ballots.

The farmers were reportedly rounded up and summarily killed by armed insurgents in retaliation for refusing to pay extortion to one militant.

Malam Zabarmari, a leader of a rice farmers association in Borno state, confirmed the massacre to The Associated Press, saying at least 40 people were killed.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari expressed grief over the killings.

“I condemn the killing of our hardworking farmers by terrorists in Borno State. The entire country is hurt by these senseless killings. My thoughts are with their families in this time of grief,” he said.

Buhari said the government had given the armed forces everything needed “to take all necessary steps to protect the country’s population and its territory.”

A member of the House of Representatives, Ahmed Satomi, who represents the Jere Federal constituency of Borno, said at least 44 burials were taking place Sunday.

“Farmers and fishermen were killed in cold blood. Over 60 farmers were affected, but we only have so far received 44 corpses from the farms,” the lawmaker said.

Boko Haram and a breakaway faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province, are both active in the region. Boko Haram’s more than decade-long insurgency has left thousands dead and displaced tens of thousands. Officials say Boko Haram members often force villagers to pay illegal taxes by taking their livestock or crops but some villagers have begun to resist the extortion.

Satomi said the farmers in Garin Kwashebe were attacked because they had disarmed and arrested a Boko Haram gunman on Friday who had been tormenting them.

“A lone gunman, who was a member of Boko Haram came to harass the farmers by ordering them to give him money and also cook for him. While he was waiting for the food to be cooked, the farmers seized the moment he stepped into the toilet to sn**ch his rifle and tied him up,” he said.

“They later handed him over to the security. But sadly, the security forces did not protect the courageous farmers. And in reprisal for daring them, the Boko Haram mobilized and came to attack them on their farms.”

FG, LABOUR LEADERS AGREE TO ₦5 REDUCTION IN FUEL PRICE

The Federal Government has announced the reduction of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol from N168 to N163.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, after meeting with the organised labour which began around 9 pm on Monday and ended at 1:30 am on Tuesday.

According to the Minister, a technical committee has been set up to ensure price stability in the industry.

Ngige stated that the committee, which will report back to the larger house on January 25, will appraise the market forces and other things that would ensure stability in the industry.

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr Ayuba Wabba, also maintained the position of the minister, saying that the agreement was reached by both sides.

The product presently dispenses at N168, following the decision of the Petroleum Products Marketing Company to increase the ex-depot price of petrol from N147.67 per litre to N155.17 per litre in November.

Meanwhile, there is no conclusion yet on the demand for a reversal of the electricity tariff and the Federal Government said talks were ongoing with the distribution companies.

For the sixth time since the current administration announced a hike in the pump price of petrol and electricity tariff in November, members of the organized labour movement and the Federal Government’s team have been holding series of talks, to continue the discussions on the demand of the workers union.

Both the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had called for a reversal of the recent hike, threatening to embark on a nationwide strike and protests, the reason why the government had to convene a meeting a month ago.

At the last meeting, the Federal Government explained that it needed one week to make further consultations.

BENUE REP, HEMBE, DUMPS APGA FOR APC

A member of the House of Representatives from Benue State, Mr Herman Hembe, has defected from the All Progressives Grand Alliance to the All Progressives Congress.

The Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Wase, read Hembe’s letter of defection at the opening of plenary on Tuesday.

The Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, however, raised a point of order to fault the defection, urging Wase to declare the defector’s seat vacant.

Wase declined the request, citing the examples of similar defections in the past that were not sanctioned.

DSS ARRESTS LAGOS- LAWYER DURING 'ONE MAN PROTEST' IN ABUJA.

A Lagos State-based lawyer and activist, Malcolm Omirhobo, has been arrested at the Presidential Villa gate in Abuja by the operatives of the Department of State Services while embarking on a "one-man protest" against the killing of at least 43 farmers in Borno State.

The lawyer, who arrived at the gate at about 9 am and clad in a customised T-Shirt with an inscription, "Stop The Genocide" alongside some journalists, was whisked away by the officers in a Gestapo manner.

Malcolm RIchard Omirhobo during the 'one man protest' at the villa gate in Abuja
Omirhobo had come to the villa gate to protest against the gruesome killing of the rice and fish farmers in Zabarmari community.

The activist was stopped by the policemen attached to the gate near the Federal Secretariat while heading toward the Presidential Villa.

An argument ensued in the process as the lawyer insisted on seeing President Muhammadu Buhari in order to tell him to stop the carnage and the senseless killing of Nigerians in the country.

The police put a call to one of their superior officers, Hadejia, who appealed and pacified Omirhobo to write a formal letter if he wanted to have an audience with the President.

But trouble started when the armed DSS officials arrived at the scene, descended on the activist and harassed the journalists covering the scene.

Malcolm Omirhobo addressing journalists
Addressing journalists before his arrest, Omirhobo said he had come to the Presidential Villa to protest peacefully against the institutionalised and systemic genocide going on in Nigeria.

He said, "Coming on the heels of the slaughtering of 110 farmers in Borno State, I am here to tell the President that enough is enough. He should stop playing the ostrich because the government is backing all the evils perpetrated by these evil people killing innocent and harmless Nigerians.

"I am saying it categorically that the government is conniving, conspiring and assisting this crime against humanity, and that is why I am here to protest. I came here now, but the officers are saying that I cannot exercise my rights."

PROTEST RESUMES IN LAGOS AS OLD WOMEN, OTHER MARCH WITH PLACARDS.

The EndSARS protest, which gripped the country for about two weeks in October, resumed in Lagos State on Thursday with protesters marching by Tejuosho Road in the Yaba area of the state.

SaharaReporters gathered that old women and some young men brandished various placards in the area, defying the scorching heat to march for almost two hours.

They continued to chant, "End SARS and we march for our children."

A number of them were also seen carrying the Nigerian flag in their hands, with microphones to make their voices audible.

The EndSARS movement, mostly peaceful, had turned to a blood field on Tuesday, October 20, when the personnel of the Nigerian Army went to the Lekki Tollgate area and opened fire on the crowds.

The soldiers from the 65 Battalion, Nigerian Army, Bonny Camp, Victoria Island, reportedly killed and injured several demonstrators.

A certain Lieutenant Colonel Bello, who was the Commanding Officer of the battalion, had reportedly led the soldiers to fire bullets at the scene. However, he claimed before the ongoing Lagos State Panel of Inquiry that he only fired blank ammunition into the air.

A day after the shootings, the Lagos State Governor had initially denied any loss of life from the gunfire or that he was aware of the deployment of soldiers.

Later, he admitted that two persons were killed in the incident, while the army said in a terse statement that the state government requested a military clampdown on the protesters to enforce its earlier-than-scheduled curfew.

UK APPROVES Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 VACCINE FOR USE IN WORLD FIRST.

The UK on Wednesday became the first country in the world to approve the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for use and said that it will be rolled out from next week.

“The Government has today accepted the recommendation from the independent Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to approve Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine for use,” the government said in a statement.

“The vaccine will be made available across the UK from next week,” the statement said.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson hailed the development as “fantastic” news, adding: “It is the protection of vaccines that will ultimately allow us to reclaim our lives and get the economy moving again.”

Care home residents, health and care staff, the elderly and people who are clinically extremely vulnerable will be first in line to receive the vaccine.

The UK is home to Europe’s deadliest outbreak of the virus, with more than 1.6 million cases of the novel coronavirus having been recorded since the pandemic began in late 2019. More than 59,000 people have died with the virus, according to official figures.

US-based Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech, and US biotech firm Moderna, have reported preliminary findings of more than 90 percent effectiveness – an unexpectedly high rate – in trials of their vaccines, which are both based on new messenger RNA (mRNA) technology.

Pfizer said the UK’s emergency use authorisation marks an historic moment in the fight against COVID-19.

“This authorisation is a goal we have been working toward since we first declared that science will win, and we applaud the MHRA for their ability to conduct a careful assessment and take timely action to help protect the people of the UK,” said CEO Albert Bourla.

“As we anticipate further authorisations and approvals, we are focused on moving with the same level of urgency to safely supply a high-quality vaccine around the world.”

One concern is that Pfizer’s vaccine must be stored and shipped at ultra-cold temperatures of around minus 70 degrees Celsius (minus 94 degrees Fahrenheit), adding to the challenge of distributing the vaccine around the world.

Pfizer says it has developed shipping containers that use dry ice to keep the vaccine cool. GPS-enabled sensors will allow the company to track each shipment and ensure they stay cold, the company says.

The UK will start vaccinating people early next week after it gets 800,000 doses from Pfizer’s manufacturing centre in Belgium

Other countries are not far behind. The US and the European Union also are vetting the Pfizer shot along with the vaccine by competitor Moderna.

Pfizer said it would immediately begin shipping limited supplies to the UK – and has been gearing up for even wider distribution if given a similar nod by the US Food and Drug Administration, a decision expected as early as next week.

The UK will start vaccinating people early next week after it gets 800,000 doses from Pfizer’s manufacturing centre in Belgium. The speed of the rollout depends on how fast Pfizer can manufacture and deliver the vaccine, the UK said.

But doses everywhere are scarce, and initial supplies will be rationed until more is manufactured in the first several months of next year.

Danny Altmann, professor of immunology at Imperial College London, said: “Exciting news keeps coming, but this really is momentous. Nobody knew how the battle to find effective vaccines would pan out. Now, less than 11 months from the first characterisation of the virus sequence, we have the first emergency approval for use of a really effective vaccine.

“Truly heroic. I don’t think we should get too hung up on ‘the race’ and this as the first approval. Over the next several weeks we’ll likely see a number of licenses granted – and we do need them all to get speedily out of this mess.”

Fifty hospitals are set up across England and waiting to accept the vaccine, large vaccination centres are being set up now, and in time local health centres known as general practitioners (GPs) and pharmacists will provide the jab in the community if they have those capabilities

UK regulators also are considering another shot made by AstraZeneca and Oxford University.

But PM Johnson has warned “we must first navigate a hard winter” of restrictions to try to curb the virus until there is enough vaccine to go around.

Every country has different rules for determining when an experimental vaccine is safe and effective enough to use.

Intense political pressure to be the first to roll out a rigorously scientifically tested shot coloured the race in the US and UK, even as researchers pledged to cut no corners.

In contrast, China and Russia have offered different vaccinations to their citizens ahead of late-stage testing.

Tested in tens of thousands
The shots made by Pfizer and BioNTech were tested in tens of thousands of people.

While that study is not complete, early results suggest the vaccine is 95 percent effective at preventing mild to severe COVID-19 disease.

A dose of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccination of BioNTech and Pfizer is pictured in this undated handout photo, as Britain became the first western country to approve a COVID-19 vaccine [Reuters]
The companies told regulators that of the first 170 infections detected in study volunteers, only eight were among people who had received the actual vaccine and the rest had gotten a dummy shot.
“We know that Pfizer can have only 1.3 billion doses by the end of next year. That is definitely not going to vaccinate the world, but we are going to take this first crucial step which is exciting,” Oksana Pyzik, a teaching fellow at the UCL School of Pharmacy, told Al Jazeera.

“The timeline has been fast, but also we need to think about this unique context that we are in – we have over 200 companies that have been focusing on developing a vaccine, they have unlimited resources and all of the world’s talents have been focused on this problem.”

The companies also reported no serious side effects, although vaccine recipients may experience temporary pain and flu-like reactions immediately after injections.

But experts caution that a vaccine cleared for emergency use is still experimental and final testing must be completed. Still to be determined is whether the Pfizer-BioNTech shots protect against people spreading the coronavirus without showing symptoms.

Another question is how long protection lasts.

The vaccine also has been tested in only a small number of children, none younger than 12, and there is no information on its effects on pregnant women.
