Eva Yates is a neo-surrealist oil painter whose warping of imagery counters her demons. She descends to a distorted world of nymphs and bright playful pallets to reveal the contrasting poles of her subconscious. Threats move in from the edges, often as optical illusions, as she stretches reality. Her work opens space for the imagination to grow. Using her friends as her muse, she immortalises the iconic and reinvigorates the nostalgic.

Come and check out Eva’s work at Live@Livesey tomorrow afternoon, ticket link in bio!

Stemming from the theme of childhood, Tygar finds ways to make old work anew, the sketchbooks of his and his siblings’ past are all trapped behind these bars of redaction. The sense of collaboration and history is strong in these works with more than a decade apart these works explore ones current self working with a past self or sibling.

Tasha Francis is a digital portrait illustrator from South London. The brand name for her creative practice; H8ngry (pronounced as 'huhng-gree') represents her visual appetite for producing vivid and stimulating images. Tasha brings attention to the partial rejection of realism in her illustrations through abstraction and the use of varying colour contrasts.

Mattia is taking the sport out of sporting, using it as a conduit to explore and understand the broader and nuanced human condition. By picking out and paying attention to the less romanticised and glorified moments, whether it be in sporting or the everyday, he elevates these moments making them the prime focus of the subject matter…

Priti Patel’s plan to send refugees on to Rwanda is being legally challenged this week due to the government’s failure to identify risks LGBTQ+ people and other vulnerable groups. The meaning of the buzzword “taking back control” has once again been revealed as a farce.

In this article, discusses the moral panic that the government has manufactured over the channel crossings, while looking at how Rwanda is the latest in western efforts to dehumanise and deter refugees pursuing a better life.

Nick Dahlen's work carries both a sense of rhythm and ease, his appreciation for the every day allowing him to transform moments into poetry. The characters sitting comfortably on his canvas positioned with a nostalgic quality.

Lake Retba or ‘Lac Rose’ is a lake north East of Dakar, Senegal known for its pink hue caused by the presence of algae and more importantly to the community that lives from it, its high salt content. In 2016, photographer Ilyes Griyeb captured the lives of this community that lives off of the lake in a beautiful sensitivity.

Much of Ilyes's work has focused on his family’s home country of Morocco, where he shoots with similar emotiveness. He was brought to Senegal on commission, when it fell through he decided to photograph the lake's residents, driven to capture their lives contrasted with the lake from which they live.

On October 4th 1936 the people of East London halted a march of fascists. The planned route was through an impoverished area with a high area of Jewish residents was seen as a direct provocation, and as the government of the day refused requests to ban the march, an estimated 250,000 East Londoners took to the streets to block their way.

The same slogan used by the Republicans of the Spanish civil war was called out at the barricades, ‘They Shall not Pass’. Their actions ensured that the Blackshirts had to turn back and history was made, with the East End playing a crucial role in the defeat of British fascism.

A powerful mural commemorating the battle, painted in 1983, lives on the side of St. Georges Town Hall in Shadwell, east London.

In light of Earth Day, we're looking at a homegrown invention born out of an experiment, where someone hacked a printer cartridge and replaced it with soot. Since then, ‘Air-Ink’ has made its way through many major cities such as Hong-Kong, New-York, London, Berlin, Mumbai, Delhi, and Singapore.

To create the ink, carbon emissions are captured from the tailpipes of cars and diesel generators using a cylindrical device called ‘Kaalink’. It’s then mixed with a polymer and a solvent until it forms a sleek consistency. Most black ink pens are already made from fossil fuels, so why burn new fuel to make them?

Air Pollution is responsible for more than 5 million deaths every year. Air-Ink not only helps to reduce pollution but in return gives us something new and poetic.

20/04/2022

With the fast fashion industry growing, the conversation around sustainable and stylish fashion is needed more than ever. Global warming is taking its course and the fashion industry is partly to blame, accounting for around 10% of greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 20% of wastewater. However, smaller brands are playing their part in helping reduce this, including the independent UK fashion label where premium and ethical cross paths…

Starting in 2020, Named Collective aims to make quality streetwear while still being sustainable and socially responsible. They are more than just a brand, they are a movement, continuously encouraging community engagement with their slogan ‘it's nice 2 b cool but its cool 2 be nice’. Visually, they are taking the young design world by storm and their clothing has been seen on many familiar faces such as up-and-coming musician Lozeak and rapper & singer, Iamddb.

Combining animal cruelty-free fabrics with compostable and biodegradable packaging, their policies shows how streetwear brands can help reduce fashion’s detrimental impact on the planet. However they don’t stop there; they continue to give not just to the environment, but just like their slogan implies to the community too, using their weekly newsletter ‘the good sh*t’ to educate their community on issues outside the fashion world.

Named Collective has continued to pave the way for independent fashion brands, from their eccentric product lines to their well-educated agendas on the world around us. This is what our generation of fashion is looking like, and we are proud.

After years of DJing and throwing parties across the country; housemates, activists, and community organisers Harry Gay, Wacha and passer came together on the first Friday of lockdown to throw an online party to give qu**rs across the globe a sense of catharsis and community whilst in isolation. A year on from their first online party on the eve of lockdown, they've built a substantial online following and have pioneered a new form of radical, accessible party that can be joined IRL or online.

From lockdown live streams in their kitchen to the packed-out clubs, in less than two years Q***r House Party has taken the London scene by storm and given it a much-needed injection of q***r joy and anarchist energy.

Q***r House Party keeps their politics and activism central to their events, creating a space that is not only accessible for the whole LGBTIQ+ community, but puts issues they care about to the front. They use their collective to draw attention to injustice, throwing events in solidarity with groups such as Sisters Uncut, Black Lives Matter and United St*****rs of the World.

‘Art, to be true art, must grow out of human beings and it must help human beings live a better and fuller life. It must extend the field of feeling and vision we are born with.’

Eliot Elisofon was born on the lower east side of New-York city to immigrant parents, in 1911.
Elisofon’s childhood struggles humbled and inspired his career in photography. He shot in many places and communities all around the world, keeping the human condition essential within his art.

Elisofon was well recognised for his early colour photography and LIFE magazine photo essays before he directed and produced feature films and television series on African arts and traditions in the late 1960s to early 1970s...

'Photography has enriched my life. It has enabled me to travel… to almost every corner of the globe, using my camera as a magic carpet to see and study the meaning and beauty of civilizations and environments besides my own.' -Eliot Elisofon

11/03/2022

One of the most important photographers of the 20th century, Gordon Parks captured America in all of its complexity, documenting many seminal photos in its history.

In 1948 Parks proposed a piece to LIFE magazine documenting the gangs wars of late 40s Harlem. Parks series focused around Red Jackson, who led the gang known as the Midtowners. The series highlighted the realities of these young men, whilst humanising them and grounding their stories in the context of a segregated nation.

As the first black photographer for the magazine, how the story was retold through these images is also important. Having handed over the images to its editors, parks fought against the decision to include an image of Red holding a smoking gun for the front cover, believing he would be violating the trust he built with him. A decision that would have sensationalised the story and altered its retelling.

Parks destroyed the negative in the film lab and the series was pushed to the back of the publication. What remains through these archives is an immense body of images telling a small part of the complex history of Harlem.
